What to check before choosing a portrait monitor
Make sure the monitor can rotate and stay stable
A monitor is usable vertically if its stand allows upright rotation or a separate arm or stand can position it that way. All six models in TechRadar Pro’s guide are described as VESA-mount compatible, but that alone does not guarantee that a particular arm will fit. Verify the monitor’s VESA pattern and weight, the mount’s capacity, desk-clamp clearance, and the arm’s range of motion. For a monitor with a pivoting stand, check whether it rotates both ways and whether the base remains stable in portrait orientation.

Match size and resolution to the work
TechRadar Pro describes 24–27 inches as an ideal size range for many vertical-monitor users and 9:16 as the standard portrait orientation. Treat these as general guidance, not universal ergonomic rules: desk depth, viewing distance, the height of the display, and the applications you use all affect what feels comfortable. Resolution also matters. A higher pixel count can provide finer detail, while a larger screen at the same resolution may show less detail per inch. Consider whether you need extra workspace for code, sharp text, or color and image detail.
Choose refresh rate for the way you use the screen
For office work, coding, or reading, a high refresh rate may be less important than resolution, viewing comfort, and useful ports. Gaming and fast-moving content can make refresh rate a more meaningful priority. Compare the monitor’s resolution and refresh-rate modes together: the AW2725QF, for example, is described as supporting different refresh rates at 4K and Full HD, rather than one rate at both resolutions.

Check ports and USB-C power delivery
USB-C can reduce cable clutter and charge a connected laptop, but the charging limit varies by model. Compare the stated power delivery with your laptop’s requirements, and check whether the monitor has the USB-A ports or other connections you rely on. A USB-C connection does not necessarily make a display a full docking station; the S2725DC guide entry specifically cautions that buyers needing a full dock may want another option.

Account for budget and desk fit
Set a budget, then weigh it against the features you will actually use: resolution, refresh rate, power delivery, color capabilities, and adjustability. Check the screen’s dimensions and stand footprint against your desk, especially if portrait placement is intended for a second display beside another monitor.
