There is no universal winner between Verizon and AT&T. Verizon currently presents a connectivity expansion story built around wireless, fiber, fixed wireless access and its newly completed Frontier acquisition, while AT&T combines wireless and fiber growth with a stated plan for dividends, repurchases and deleveraging. The better fit depends on how you weigh income, cash-flow durability, balance-sheet risk, network investment and the price you pay on the date you invest.

The operating and financial figures below come from each company’s filings, earnings releases, proxy materials and management commentary through the second quarter of 2026. They use different periods and definitions. Current share prices, valuation multiples and dividend yields were not captured, so those items require a dated market-data check before you make a relative-value judgment.

What each company is trying to become

Both businesses are repositioning around broadband connectivity rather than relying solely on traditional mobile-phone service. Wireless remains the largest customer relationship for each company, but fiber, fixed wireless access (FWA), home broadband and the network assets that connect them are central to their plans.

Verizon: a larger fiber footprint after Frontier

Verizon’s 2025 annual report identifies wireless, fiber broadband and FWA as core connectivity offerings. It reported 5.7 million FWA broadband connections at December 31, 2025. Verizon completed its acquisition of Frontier on January 20, 2026, adding a fiber business and assuming Frontier debt. That transaction changes the scale and financing profile of Verizon, so comparisons with periods before the closing date should be treated as pre-acquisition measurements.

On its January 30, 2026 earnings call, Verizon management said, “In Broadband, we are focused on achieving our goal to reach 40 million to 50 million fiber passings over the medium term.” This is a management target, not a completed network result. “Passings” describe premises that a fiber network can serve; they do not equal paying subscribers or revenue.

AT&T: fiber penetration plus multi-product connectivity

AT&T’s strategy also combines mobile service with fiber and other advanced connectivity products. Its 2026 proxy materials report that AT&T surpassed 10 million AT&T Fiber subscribers in 2025. Fiber revenue was $8.6 billion for that year, up 17.0% from 2024, according to the proxy. Those are full-year 2025 company-reported results, not a forecast for 2026.

AT&T’s second-quarter 2026 release reported more than one million Advanced Connectivity customer additions across fiber, FWA and postpaid phone subscribers. Because that metric aggregates several products, it should not be read as one million new fiber lines or one million new mobile accounts.

Network execution: what the reported numbers show

Verizon’s broadband momentum

Verizon reported approximately 17.1 million combined fiber and FWA broadband connections in the second quarter of 2026. It added 348,000 broadband connections during that quarter. The combined figure includes two different access technologies: fiber has a wired, high-capacity network, while FWA uses Verizon’s wireless spectrum and radio network to connect homes. Mix matters because economics, construction requirements and competitive conditions differ between them.

The company’s 2026 capital-expenditure outlook was $16.0 billion to $16.5 billion. Verizon spent $8.2 billion on capital expenditures during the first six months of 2026, so the full-year range implies that a substantial portion of planned investment was scheduled for the second half. The range is management guidance and can change with deployment timing, integration work, spectrum needs or economic conditions.

AT&T’s fiber scale and additions

AT&T’s more than 10 million fiber subscribers and $8.6 billion of 2025 fiber revenue indicate a larger established fiber customer base than a simple quarterly net-addition figure would show. Its 17.0% year-over-year fiber-revenue growth demonstrates momentum in the reported 2025 period, although revenue growth does not by itself establish subscriber profitability, churn or return on invested capital.

AT&T’s one-million-plus Advanced Connectivity additions in the second quarter of 2026 provide a broad indicator of demand across its portfolio. To evaluate execution, investors should separate fiber net additions, FWA additions and postpaid-phone additions in subsequent releases, then compare each with customer acquisition costs, churn and average revenue per user.

How to compare the networks without overstating the evidence

  • Use Verizon’s 17.1 million combined fiber/FWA connections and 348,000 second-quarter additions as current-period operating indicators.
  • Use AT&T’s 2025 subscriber and revenue figures as full-year historical results, and its second-quarter 2026 Advanced Connectivity figure as a combined-product measure.
  • Do not treat Verizon’s 40-million-to-50-million fiber-passings objective as achieved coverage.
  • Check whether each company is reporting customers, connections, homes passed, revenue or additions; these denominators are not interchangeable.

Debt, leverage and interest burden

Verizon’s reported debt and interest rate

Verizon reported $165.2 billion of total debt at June 30, 2026 in its 2026 Form 10-Q. The balance included $136.5 billion of unsecured debt and $28.8 billion of secured debt; the components may not add exactly because of rounding. Verizon reported a 5.0% effective interest rate for the six months ended June 30, 2026.

The debt figure includes the financial consequences of a company that is funding a large network and has completed the Frontier acquisition. A high absolute debt balance is not automatically unsafe for a telecommunications company, because the business can produce recurring subscription revenue. The relevant questions are whether operating cash flow covers interest and capital spending, how much debt matures in each year, and whether leverage rises or falls after acquisitions and network investment.

AT&T’s stated deleveraging path

AT&T’s second-quarter 2026 outlook said net debt to adjusted EBITDA was expected to return to a level consistent with its 2.5-times target within approximately three years following the EchoStar transaction. This is management’s expectation, not a guaranteed result. The company’s 2025 full-year release had said leverage could rise to approximately 3.2 times after the Lumen and EchoStar transactions and decline to approximately 3.0 times by year-end 2026. Because later reporting can change that trajectory, investors should verify the latest quarter’s actual net debt, adjusted EBITDA and transaction effects before relying on those figures.

Net debt-to-adjusted-EBITDA is a company-defined leverage measure. It may exclude or adjust items that appear in GAAP earnings, and different companies can calculate it differently. Compare the definitions and reconciliation tables, rather than placing Verizon’s total-debt figure beside AT&T’s adjusted leverage ratio as though they were the same statistic.

Questions to ask about balance-sheet risk

  • What is the next twelve-month interest expense, and how much debt must be refinanced?
  • Does management expect leverage to decline through internally generated cash, asset sales, earnings growth or a combination?
  • How much capital spending is required to maintain the network, versus expand fiber and 5G capacity?
  • Could an acquisition, spectrum purchase or restructuring change the stated leverage path?
  • Are secured and unsecured debt balances, pension obligations, leases and other commitments included in the comparison?

Cash flow after network investment

Verizon’s cash commitments

Verizon paid $5.9 billion in cash dividends during the first half of 2026 and spent $8.2 billion on capital expenditures over the same six-month period. Those two uses alone consumed $14.1 billion before debt repayment, acquisitions, spectrum payments, taxes and other investing or financing activity. The company’s full-year capital-expenditure outlook of $16.0 billion to $16.5 billion provides context for the investment intensity, but it does not state free cash flow.

When reviewing Verizon’s next filing, calculate cash flow available after capital expenditures and compare it with dividends, debt maturities and acquisition spending. A dividend can be covered in one period while becoming less flexible if capital requirements or interest costs rise.

AT&T’s reported free cash flow

AT&T’s 2026 proxy materials report $16.6 billion of full-year 2025 free cash flow. That is a historical, company-reported figure. Confirm how AT&T defines free cash flow, including whether the calculation subtracts capital expenditures and how it treats proceeds, restructuring payments or other adjustments.

AT&T’s 2025 full-year release projected improved adjusted EBITDA and adjusted earnings-per-share growth, along with higher free cash flow through 2028. Those are outlook statements, not realized results. The company’s future cash available for dividends, repurchases and debt reduction will depend on subscriber trends, pricing, churn, fiber construction, interest costs and transaction integration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why cash-flow definitions matter

GAAP operating cash flow, GAAP capital expenditures, company-defined free cash flow and adjusted EBITDA answer different questions. Operating cash flow shows cash generated by operations under accounting rules. Free cash flow generally subtracts capital investment, but each issuer may make additional adjustments. Adjusted EBITDA excludes selected items and is not a measure of cash left after interest, taxes or capital spending. Use reconciliations in the filings before comparing payout capacity.

Dividends and shareholder returns

AT&T’s stated distribution plan

AT&T maintained an annualized common dividend of $1.11 per share in its second-quarter 2026 outlook. It also planned to return $45 billion or more to shareholders during 2026–2028 through dividends and share repurchases. Both statements describe management’s plan; they do not guarantee future declarations, authorization or execution. The eventual dividend yield cannot be determined without pairing the latest declared dividend with a dated share price.

Verizon’s dividend action

On the January 30, 2026 earnings call, Verizon management announced an annualized dividend increase of $0.07 per share and described the increase as 2.5%. The statement should be read as management commentary about the announced increase, not as a promise that future increases will continue at that rate. Verizon’s dividend capacity must be assessed alongside its $165.2 billion debt balance, capital spending and integration obligations.

How to test payout durability

  1. Record the latest declared quarterly dividend and the declaration date.
  2. Multiply by four only when the company presents an annualized rate and no special dividend is involved.
  3. Use the share price from the same date to calculate a contemporaneous indicated yield.
  4. Compare dividends and repurchases with company-defined free cash flow after capital expenditures.
  5. Review debt reduction, maturities and management’s stated priorities before assuming all excess cash will be distributed.

Valuation: the missing piece in a Verizon-versus-AT&T decision

Operating quality and balance-sheet progress do not tell you whether either stock is attractively priced. The available company materials do not provide a current relative valuation snapshot, and this comparison does not claim that one stock is cheaper or offers a better yield.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before publication or purchase, collect share prices and market capitalization on the same date, then calculate valuation measures consistently. Useful checks include forward and trailing price-to-earnings ratios, enterprise value to adjusted EBITDA, price-to-free-cash-flow, dividend yield, net debt to EBITDA and the premium or discount to each company’s own historical range. Note whether earnings are GAAP or adjusted and whether EBITDA excludes recurring costs.

A high dividend yield can reflect a low share price caused by perceived risk rather than superior income. Conversely, a lower yield can accompany a faster-growing fiber business or greater expected debt reduction. Valuation should therefore be evaluated after the operating, cash-flow and leverage review, not substituted for it.

Which portfolio objective might each stock fit?

Income-oriented investors

An income-focused investor may prefer the company whose declared dividend is best supported by recurring cash flow after capital spending and whose debt maturities are manageable. AT&T provides a stated $1.11 annualized dividend and a multiyear return plan; Verizon provides a reported 2026 dividend increase and extensive connectivity revenue. Neither fact establishes a superior yield without a current share price, and neither eliminates dividend-cut risk.

Investors prioritizing deleveraging

AT&T offers an explicit management path toward leverage consistent with a 2.5-times target within approximately three years after the EchoStar transaction, while its earlier outlook described a rise to about 3.2 times and a decline toward 3.0 times by the end of 2026. The path depends on execution and should be checked against actual quarterly results. Verizon’s disclosed $165.2 billion total debt and 5.0% effective interest rate make its debt burden a central diligence item, particularly after Frontier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Investors seeking broadband expansion

Verizon offers a clear expansion target of 40 million to 50 million fiber passings over the medium term and reported 17.1 million combined fiber and FWA connections in the second quarter of 2026. AT&T reported more than 10 million fiber subscribers, $8.6 billion of 2025 fiber revenue and 17.0% year-over-year fiber-revenue growth. Verizon’s passing target is forward-looking; AT&T’s subscriber and revenue figures are historical. Compare construction economics, penetration and returns rather than simply choosing the larger headline number.

Investors with a longer time horizon

A long-term holder should model several years of capital spending, debt refinancing and subscriber behavior. Fiber can create durable local advantages but requires substantial construction and maintenance. Wireless pricing, spectrum needs, competition and customer churn can change returns. Include a downside case in which broadband additions slow, integration costs persist and interest rates remain elevated.

Investors with lower tolerance for uncertainty

Neither company is free of event risk. Verizon must integrate Frontier’s fiber operations and assumed debt while funding its network plan. AT&T must execute the EchoStar transaction, manage the leverage step-up described in its outlook and deliver the expected cash-flow improvement. An investor who cannot tolerate acquisition or refinancing uncertainty may require a wider valuation margin of safety or a smaller position, regardless of the advertised dividend.

A practical comparison checklist before buying

  1. Refresh the dates. Use the latest quarterly filing and earnings release, because debt, dividends, guidance and transaction effects can change after the second quarter of 2026.
  2. Normalize the periods. Put full-year 2025 results, first-half 2026 cash flows and second-quarter 2026 operating figures in separate columns.
  3. Reconcile definitions. Document each company’s treatment of adjusted EBITDA, free cash flow, net debt, capital expenditures and broadband connections.
  4. Measure network productivity. Track additions, churn, revenue per customer, fiber penetration and capital spending per passing or connection when disclosed.
  5. Map the debt. List total debt, secured and unsecured portions, effective interest rate, maturities and any acquisition-related obligations.
  6. Test shareholder returns. Compare dividends and repurchases with cash left after capital investment and required debt service.
  7. Calculate valuation on one date. Use the same share-price timestamp and clearly label GAAP versus adjusted earnings.
  8. Write a personal decision rule. For example, require a minimum cash-flow coverage ratio, a maximum leverage level or a target valuation before investing. That rule should reflect your risk tolerance and time horizon, not a generic ranking.

Key risks that could change the thesis

  • Integration risk: Verizon’s Frontier acquisition and AT&T’s EchoStar transaction can produce costs, delays or leverage outcomes different from management’s plans.
  • Capital-intensity risk: Fiber expansion and 5G upgrades can require more spending than expected, reducing cash available for dividends or buybacks.
  • Competitive pricing: Aggressive promotions may increase additions while weakening average revenue or margins.
  • Interest-rate and refinancing risk: Higher rates can raise the cost of replacing maturing debt, especially for highly leveraged operators.
  • Technology mix risk: FWA and fiber have different capacity, construction and churn characteristics; a combined broadband number can conceal changes in mix.
  • Regulatory and spectrum risk: Rules, spectrum auctions and network obligations can alter economics and timing.
  • Definition risk: Adjusted metrics can make two companies appear comparable when their exclusions differ. Read the reconciliation tables.

Bottom line: match the stock to the portfolio job

Verizon may suit an investor who wants exposure to a newly enlarged fiber platform, values a clearly stated broadband expansion target and is prepared to monitor Frontier integration, heavy debt and significant capital spending. AT&T may suit an investor who places more weight on an established fiber subscriber base, the reported 2025 cash-flow result and a stated program of dividends, repurchases and leverage reduction after EchoStar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are portfolio-fit profiles, not buy or sell recommendations. The deciding step is a dated valuation and cash-flow check: update each share price, calculate comparable multiples and dividend yields, verify the latest debt and guidance, and then test the result against your risk tolerance and investment horizon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which company has the higher dividend yield, Verizon or AT&T?

The available figures do not establish a current winner. AT&T reported a $1.11 annualized common dividend in its second-quarter 2026 outlook, while Verizon reported a 2026 annualized dividend increase of $0.07 per share, described as 2.5%. A yield comparison requires each latest dividend and a share price from the same date.

Is Verizon’s 40-million-to-50-million fiber figure a subscriber forecast?

No. Verizon management described 40 million to 50 million fiber passings as a medium-term goal. Passings represent premises that the network can serve, not completed subscriber additions or guaranteed revenue.

Can AT&T’s 2.5-times leverage target be treated as certain?

No. AT&T described a goal of returning net debt to adjusted EBITDA to a level consistent with 2.5 times within approximately three years after the EchoStar transaction. It is a management expectation, and subsequent filings should be checked for actual progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t Verizon’s total debt be compared directly with AT&T’s leverage ratio?

Verizon’s $165.2 billion figure is total debt at June 30, 2026, including unsecured and secured portions. AT&T’s leverage figures use net debt divided by adjusted EBITDA, a company-defined ratio. The measures have different numerators, denominators and adjustments.
