There is no single winner between Verizon and Cox: first check which services are available at your exact address. If Verizon Fios fiber is offered, its near-symmetrical uploads on most plans can suit video calls, large file transfers, and cloud backups. Verizon 5G Home is fixed wireless, not Fios, and should be judged on local eligibility and performance. Cox’s surfaced 1 Gig and 2 Gig cable plans advertise downloads up to those tiers but uploads up to 35 Mbps. Compare the full monthly cost, data terms, and equipment as well as download speed.
Start with availability and connection type
Enter your address in both providers’ availability checkers before comparing plans. Verizon Fios is offered in New England and the Mid-Atlantic, while Verizon 5G Home reaches more locations nationally; eligibility for either service still varies by address. Cox offers also vary by address. Verizon’s availability page describes Fios as fiber and says most plans have near-symmetrical download and upload speeds. Verizon availability details.
Keep Verizon’s two products distinct. Fios is a fiber connection; 5G Home is fixed wireless, with eligibility and performance dependent on location. Do not assume that a Verizon 5G offer is available wherever Fios is, or vice versa. Cox’s surfaced residential plan material describes fiber-powered service connected to premises over coaxial lines, and currently displays Spectrum branding. Check the provider and service presentation returned for your address before treating that page as the offer for your account. Cox residential internet plans.
How the advertised speeds compare
| Service | Connection | Upload information in the cited plan material |
|---|---|---|
| Verizon Fios | Fiber | Near-symmetrical upload and download speeds on most plans, according to Verizon’s availability page |
| Verizon 5G Home | Fixed wireless | Varies by service and address; verify the eligible offer and expected performance locally |
| Cox surfaced 1 Gig and 2 Gig plans | Cable/coaxial delivery in surfaced plan material | Up to 35 Mbps upload, according to Cox’s Gigabit plan page |
The Cox upload figure is an advertised maximum for the surfaced 1 Gig and 2 Gig offers, not a measured result for every customer. Provider-advertised maximums are not a neutral comparison of typical performance: no independent comparative speed study is available here. Ask what the exact plan offers at your address, and consider upload needs alongside download speed.

Uploads matter when several people make video calls, send large work files, publish media, or back up devices to the cloud. If household use is mostly streaming and browsing, a higher advertised download tier may matter more than upload speed, but the number of devices and concurrent activity still affect the fit. Choose a tier for actual household use rather than assuming the largest number is automatically better.

Verizon pricing and conditions
Verizon’s 5G Home page advertises a starting price of $35 per month with Auto Pay and an eligible Verizon mobile phone plan. Treat that as conditional promotional pricing, not a universal stand-alone rate. The page lists three plan tiers, a router, no hidden equipment charges, and plan-specific price guarantees; promotions and perks have their own eligibility and redemption terms. Confirm the amount and conditions at checkout. Verizon 5G Home plans.

Fios plan prices and tiers are address-specific. As one local example rather than a national rate card, Verizon’s Norfolk-area page lists local Fios and 5G options and says its listed Fios prices include a $10 Auto Pay discount. The page also shows that local plan selectors may offer tiers beyond those described on a general availability page. Use the checker for your own address and compare the ongoing price after discounts or promotions. Verizon Norfolk-area plans.
Cox pricing and conditions
Cox’s surfaced Gigabit page lists promotional starting prices for 1 Gig and 2 Gig offers, with Panoramic WiFi equipment included for a stated period. Taxes and fees are excluded, and the offers shown require no annual contract. The offer and price depend on address, and an included equipment period does not establish the later cost. Check the full terms for the exact offer and what the monthly total becomes after any introductory period. Cox Gigabit plans.

For an apples-to-apples comparison, write down each provider’s ongoing monthly price after promotions, any Auto Pay or mobile-bundle requirement, taxes and fees, equipment costs, and the duration and scope of a price guarantee. Compare both offers at the same address; a local example or starting price cannot establish what another household will pay.

Data allowances and unlimited options
Cox’s data terms are not presented consistently across its surfaced pages. Its coverage page describes a 1.25 TB monthly allowance, with automatic 50 GB increments costing $10 each above the allowance and a $100 monthly maximum overage charge. A separate Cox data page describes unlimited-data packages and conditions tied to qualifying Cox Mobile service and internet speed. Those descriptions do not establish which terms apply to a particular current offer; confirm the data policy and any bundle conditions with the plan shown for your address. Verizon’s 5G Home page says a router is included and advertises no hidden equipment charges. Fios equipment terms can differ by offer, so check the address-specific plan rather than applying the 5G Home terms to Fios.
Cox says a modem is required and recommends an approved cable modem. Its support information says Gigablast and Ultimate require DOCSIS 3.1; modem compatibility depends on the tier, and maximum speeds vary by service area. Wireless performance also depends on home conditions and equipment. Check Cox’s current approved modem list and the requirements for your exact plan before buying or using your own modem. Quick Recap
Choose based on the work your connection has to do
- Favor Fios when available if near-symmetrical uploads are important for frequent video meetings, large uploads, or cloud backups, and the address-specific price and terms work for you.
- Evaluate Verizon 5G Home on its own merits when it is the available Verizon option: check the address-specific offer, conditional pricing, and expected local performance rather than assuming it will perform like Fios.
- Consider Cox’s surfaced high-speed tiers if their download capacity and local price fit your household. For upload-heavy work, account for the page’s stated maximum of 35 Mbps upload on its surfaced 1 Gig and 2 Gig plans.
- Let total cost and policy decide close calls: include post-promotion pricing, fees, equipment after any included period, data terms, and any discount conditions in the comparison.
