Google Family Link is the better value for families whose children use Android phones, Chromebooks or Fitbit Ace LTE and mainly need app approvals, screen-time limits, location and Google-service filters. Verizon Family Plus is the broader safety option when your household uses Verizon cellular service and needs carrier-level call and text activity controls, driving insights, location tools, Family Line management or optional Gizmo Watch support. It costs extra on many Verizon plans. “Verizon Smart Family” is legacy terminology; Verizon now calls the service Verizon Family and the paid tier Verizon Family Plus.

What happened to Verizon Smart Family?

Verizon Smart Family is no longer available to add to accounts. Verizon’s current support guidance says its instructions also apply to Smart Family, but new comparisons should use the current Verizon Family names. Verizon Family is the service tier included with some postpaid Verizon accounts and Gizmo Watch service. Verizon Family Plus is the expanded, paid tier.

This naming distinction matters when you search Verizon support, check plan benefits or try to subscribe. Existing references to Smart Family generally describe the predecessor, while current eligibility, pricing and feature descriptions are published under Verizon Family and Verizon Family Plus.

What Verizon Family and Family Plus actually provide

Family can be included, while Plus is plan-dependent

Verizon Family is included at no additional cost with some postpaid Verizon accounts and with Gizmo Watch service. Eligibility depends on the specific account and plan, so “free” is not a universal Verizon promise.

Family Plus has a standard price of $14.99 per month on Verizon’s current 2026 support pricing information. Qualifying plans can receive a $10-per-month perk, and certain Unlimited Ultimate plans include Family Plus. Check the benefits attached to your exact line before treating either the standard or perk price as your cost.

Its advantage is carrier integration

Family Plus combines ordinary parental controls with Verizon-account data and safety features. The documented feature set includes content filtering, screen-time supervision, pausing internet access, location tracking, check-in and pick-me-up features, Verizon cellular call and text activity controls, web and app activity monitoring, driving insights and optional safety services.

That combination is useful when a parent wants one service to cover a child’s Verizon-connected phone, family-line administration and safety check-ins. Driving insights and pick-me-up tools address situations that a Google-account supervision app does not attempt to manage. Verizon also documents compatibility with Family Line and optional Gizmo Watch use.

Parent-device flexibility is broader

Verizon’s comparison guidance describes support for compatible Android and Apple parent devices while managing compatible family devices connected to Verizon. That makes the parent’s phone platform less decisive than the child’s device and Verizon account. A parent can therefore use an Apple or Android phone to manage a Verizon household, subject to device and plan compatibility.

Family Plus is not a universal message reader

Verizon’s terms set a precise boundary: the service does not monitor or block calls or messaging sent over the internet or through Rich Communications Services (RCS). The examples named by Verizon include Apple iMessage, Apple FaceTime, Google Messages, Google Voice and WhatsApp, as well as social-media messaging such as Facebook Messenger and Instagram Direct Messages.

Consequently, a parent should not buy Family Plus expecting a transcript of every conversation. Its cellular activity controls and web or app monitoring operate within Verizon’s documented scope. Internet-based and social channels can remain outside that scope even when the app, phone number or account is otherwise supervised.

What Google Family Link controls

Account-based supervision for Android families

Family Link supervises a child’s Google account and supported devices. Google’s official help lists approval requests for apps, app blocking, Android-device location, app-usage reports, daily screen-time limits, remote device locking and content controls for Chrome, Search and Google Play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This makes Family Link especially practical when the household’s main concern is what a child can install, how long apps can be used, what happens during school or bedtime and which Google services are available. It is a management layer around the child’s account and device, not a carrier billing or cellular-message dashboard.

Supported child-device requirements

Google documents supervised-device options including Android 5.0 or later, Chromebooks running Chrome OS 71 or later and Fitbit Ace LTE. Feature availability can vary by device, operating system and service, so an apparently compatible device should still be checked against Google’s current requirements.

Chromebooks support many Family Link controls, but Google says location reporting is unavailable on Chromebook devices. A family that needs location should therefore distinguish a Chromebook’s account and web supervision from an Android phone’s location capability.

School-time and bedtime scheduling

On Android 7 and later, Family Link supports Downtime and School time schedules. Parents can set weekly schedules, choose apps that remain unlimited and create school-time breaks. These controls let a family create recurring weekday and bedtime rules instead of repeatedly changing a daily limit by hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Selectable unlimited apps are important for practical routines: a parent can restrict entertainment while leaving an approved communication or school app available. The schedule still depends on the child using a supported Android device and on the app being governed through Family Link.

The iPhone and iPad limitation is substantial

Google explicitly says most supervision tools do not work when the child uses an iPhone or iPad. When a child signs in to Google apps on an iPhone or iPad, screen-time limits, device location, app activity, app blocking and app permissions, and Chrome website restrictions do not work.

That means Family Link is not a full parental-control solution for an iPhone child simply because the child has a Google account. Parents may still use a Google account for Google services, but the central device-supervision features are largely unavailable on iOS and iPadOS. Cross-platform households should treat this as a deciding limitation, not a minor feature gap.

Which service is better for common family situations?

Android phone plus Chromebook

Choose Family Link when the child’s devices are Android and Chromebook and the main requirements are app approval, usage reporting, daily limits, remote locking, Chrome or Search controls and recurring school or bedtime schedules. It covers the Google services these devices already use without adding a separate monthly subscription in Google’s published help material.

Child uses an iPhone or iPad

Family Link should not be the primary device-control choice for an iPhone or iPad child because the documented limits and location features do not function there. A Verizon household may find Verizon Family more suitable when the child’s device and Verizon account are compatible, but its coverage still does not turn every internet, RCS or social message into a monitorable cellular message.

Parent wants carrier activity and safety tools

Family Plus is the stronger fit when Verizon cellular activity controls, Family Line administration, driving insights, check-ins, pick-up coordination or Gizmo Watch support are central requirements. These are carrier-connected capabilities rather than extensions of Google Play or Chrome supervision.

Family mainly wants app and web boundaries

Family Link is usually the cleaner choice for Android families whose objective is limiting installations, setting app time, locking a device remotely and applying Google Play, Chrome and Search restrictions. Verizon Family Plus can also provide content and screen-time controls, but its additional value is greatest when the household will use its Verizon-specific safety and cellular features.

School-day and bedtime routines

Family Link has the clearest documented scheduling model for Android: Downtime and School time on Android 7 or later, weekly schedules, unlimited-app selections and school-time breaks. Verizon Family Plus offers screen-time supervision and internet pausing, but the cited Verizon feature descriptions do not establish an equivalent set of named recurring school-time schedule controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Location and wearable needs

Family Plus is the more natural choice for a Verizon-connected household that wants location, check-ins, pick-up features or Gizmo Watch support. Family Link provides Android-device location and supports Fitbit Ace LTE, but Chromebook location reporting is unavailable. Match the service to the device that actually needs location rather than assuming every supervised device reports it.

How the services differ in privacy and monitoring scope

Neither service should be described as complete message surveillance

Parental-control services often appear broader in marketing summaries than they are in operation. Verizon’s terms explicitly exclude major internet, RCS and social-messaging channels. Family Link’s official feature list centers on account supervision, apps, screen time, location and Google-service content controls rather than reading a child’s conversations.

Before subscribing, list the channels your family actually uses: ordinary cellular activity, iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages, WhatsApp, Instagram Direct Messages and other services. Then compare that list with the provider’s documented controls. A service can be excellent at app approval and still provide no visibility into a particular chat channel.

Location is device-specific

Family Link’s Android location feature does not imply Chromebook location reporting; Google specifically marks Chromebook location as unavailable. Verizon’s location and safety features likewise depend on compatible Verizon-connected devices and account eligibility. Location should be tested against the child’s actual phone, watch or tablet model before it becomes a safety assumption.

A practical decision process

  1. Identify the child device first. Record whether each child uses Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook, a Gizmo Watch or Fitbit Ace LTE. Family Link’s full supervision is primarily Android, Chromebook and Fitbit Ace LTE; its iOS coverage is substantially reduced.
  2. Check the account and plan. For Verizon, confirm whether your postpaid account includes Family, qualifies for the $10 Family Plus perk or includes Plus through an Unlimited Ultimate plan. If not, use the $14.99 monthly standard price when calculating cost.
  3. Separate Google controls from carrier controls. Choose Family Link for Google Play, Chrome, Search, app limits and Android schedules. Choose Family Plus when Verizon cellular activity, driving, Family Line, check-ins, pick-up tools or Gizmo Watch support are required.
  4. Write down the messaging channels that matter. Do not assume either app reads every message. Verizon specifically excludes iMessage, FaceTime, Google Messages, Google Voice, WhatsApp and social direct messages from monitoring or blocking.
  5. Verify location on the actual device. Android phones can provide Family Link location; Chromebooks cannot report location through Family Link. Verizon location features depend on compatible Verizon-connected equipment.
  6. Choose the least expensive service that covers the real requirement. For Android and Chromebook app and schedule controls, Family Link generally provides the needed functions without a listed subscription price. Pay for Family Plus when its carrier and safety features solve a requirement Family Link does not address.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Searching only for “Smart Family.” Use Verizon Family and Family Plus when checking current enrollment, support and pricing because Smart Family is legacy terminology and cannot be newly added.
  • Assuming Family Link supervises an iPhone. Google’s documented iOS limitations remove screen-time limits, location, app activity, app blocking and app permissions, along with Chrome website restrictions.
  • Treating Verizon’s call and text controls as universal. Internet, RCS and social messages can fall outside Verizon’s monitoring and blocking scope.
  • Ignoring plan eligibility. Family Plus can be included, discounted to $10 per month or charged at $14.99 per month depending on the Verizon plan; the same feature name does not guarantee the same bill.
  • Expecting Chromebook location. Family Link supports Chromebook supervision but not Chromebook location reporting.
  • Comparing only app-blocking checklists. The decisive difference may be driving insights, Family Line, check-ins, pick-up coordination or watch support rather than another app-limit setting.

Final verdict

For most Android-and-Chromebook families seeking everyday app, screen-time, Google-service and school or bedtime controls, Google Family Link is the better-value starting point. Its strongest features align with those devices, and Google’s official help does not list a subscription price.

For a Verizon household that needs carrier-integrated location, cellular activity controls, driving insights, Family Line management, check-in or pick-up tools, or Gizmo Watch support, Verizon Family Plus is the more capable service. Its recurring cost and plan eligibility must be weighed against those additional capabilities, and its monitoring does not include many internet, RCS and social-messaging channels.

The shortest answer to “which is better?” is therefore device- and account-specific: choose Family Link for supported Android and Chromebook supervision; choose Verizon Family Plus when Verizon’s carrier and safety layer is the requirement; and do not select either service expecting universal access to a child’s messages.
