Verizon will charge $10 per month for iPhone Handoff, a service that lets one Verizon phone number move between two compatible iPhones running iOS 27. Verizon’s example pairs the pocketable iPhone Duo with an iPhone 18 Pro for work. The number can be active on only one iPhone at a time, and Verizon has not announced a firm activation date beyond saying the feature is “coming soon.”

What Verizon Handoff does

Handoff associates a single Verizon mobile number with two compatible iPhones. Instead of maintaining separate numbers or treating one handset as a conventional companion device, you switch which iPhone has active status. Verizon says customers can change the active device at any time while retaining access to its 5G network.

The carrier’s named use case is an iPhone Duo for portability and an iPhone 18 Pro for work. That arrangement is intended for people who want a small or foldable-style phone while traveling but prefer a larger professional handset at a desk. It does not create two independently active lines: Verizon and reporting from MacRumors state that only one of the two iPhones is active at any moment.

Why the $10 fee is being called “double”

Verizon’s announced recurring charge is $10 a month. MacRumors and 9to5Mac report a $5 monthly price for T-Mobile’s comparable iPhone Handoff offering, so Verizon’s charge is twice that reported amount.

Those prices are service charges, not the cost of owning two phones. Verizon plan charges, taxes, device financing and promotional credits remain separate. Verizon has described offers involving iPhone Duo financing and iPhone 18 Pro bill credits, but eligibility and term requirements apply.

Can one Verizon number work on an iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro?

Yes, that is the specific pairing Verizon illustrates, provided both devices are compatible and running iOS 27. The announcement does not provide a complete compatibility list, so owners of other iPhone generations should wait for Verizon’s supported-model details rather than assume every iOS 27 device qualifies.

How switching is expected to work

  1. Enroll the two compatible iPhones in Verizon Handoff when the service becomes available.
  2. Choose which enrolled iPhone should hold active status.
  3. Switch active status to the other iPhone when your use changes, such as moving from the pocketable Duo to the 18 Pro at work.
  4. Use the newly active phone for the Verizon number and 5G service; the other handset is not simultaneously active for that line.

Verizon has not yet published the exact settings path, transfer time, limits on switching, or whether a switch requires both phones to be nearby or connected to Wi-Fi. Those operational details should be confirmed when enrollment instructions are released.

Can both iPhones ring at the same time?

Nothing in Verizon’s announcement establishes simultaneous ringing. The documented behavior is an active-status handoff with only one active iPhone at a time, so readers should not treat Handoff as a promise that both devices will ring concurrently. Verizon has also not specified how calls, messages, voicemail, emergency calling or app-based communications behave on the inactive phone.

When will Verizon Handoff be available?

Verizon says the feature is “coming soon,” but its announcement supplies no firm launch or activation date. Until Verizon publishes a date and enrollment instructions, customers cannot reliably determine whether the $10 option is open in their account, whether availability will be phased by region or plan, or whether supported models will expand after launch.

What the announcement does not settle

  • Complete compatibility: only “compatible iPhone models running iOS 27” is stated; Verizon has not listed every model.
  • Activation costs: no separate one-time Handoff fee or prorating policy is published.
  • Plan eligibility: the announcement does not identify which Verizon plans can add Handoff or whether any plans include it.
  • Two-phone behavior: one active device is established, but simultaneous ringing and inactive-phone access are not described.
  • Switching mechanics: Verizon has not documented the user-interface steps, timing or connectivity requirements.

What Verizon customers should budget

For a qualifying account, the known incremental price is $10 every month for Handoff. A realistic total also includes the customer’s existing Verizon plan, taxes and fees, and the purchase or financing of both iPhones. Promotional bill credits can lower a device payment for eligible customers, but they do not change the announced Handoff service price unless Verizon explicitly says so in the offer terms.
