Veritas is adapting a gem-sized, cryptographic NFC chip for jewelry, collectibles and trophies, allowing a buyer to tap a phone and open a product’s digital authenticity record. The company’s public materials document jewelry and trophy applications, but they do not independently confirm a fragrance-bottle deployment yet.
What Veritas is actually announcing
Veritas embeds a custom NFC microchip in an item and links that chip to a digital certificate. A smartphone tap opens the record associated with the product, which can contain its materials, maker, country of origin, lifecycle information and provenance. Veritas says the identity remains persistent as the item moves through ownership, resale and care.
The technology is based on NXP NTAG 424 DNA cryptographic technology, according to Veritas’s Digital Product Passport (DPP) explanation. Unlike a printed serial number, the chip can generate a cryptographic response that a verification service checks against the registered product identity.
Veritas founder Luci Holland told TechCrunch on February 10, 2026, that the company combined hardware and software because some conventional NFC implementations can be bypassed. Her warning is a claim about the weakness of certain shelf solutions, not proof that every ordinary NFC label is insecure or that Veritas is impossible to hack.

How a phone check works
- The brand registers the item. Product and provenance data are attached to the chip’s persistent identifier in Veritas’s platform.
- The chip is embedded. The physical format is selected for the object’s size and material, rather than relying on a visible sticker.
- The buyer taps a smartphone. Veritas positions the experience as requiring no special reader; an NFC-capable phone opens the product record.
- The service checks the identity. The cryptographic exchange is matched to the registered certificate and its associated product data.
- The record can follow the item. Depending on the brand’s implementation, the certificate can support provenance, care information, ownership events and resale history.
Veritas says tampering can make the chip dormant and conceal identifying codes. That behavior is intended to prevent a removed or manipulated chip from continuing to present a normal-looking identity. It should be treated as Veritas’s stated security design, not an independently verified guarantee.
Three chip formats for different products

The form-factor range is significant because a chip that works in a handbag cannot simply be placed unchanged inside a small jewelry setting or a thin trophy component. Placement, durability and antenna performance still have to be engineered for each product.

Jewelry and trophy deployments
Jewelry and collectibles
Veritas lists its Capsule format for jewelry and collectibles. A successful implementation would let a buyer verify an item without relying solely on visual inspection, paperwork or a seller’s database screenshot. The chip does not replace a jeweler’s assessment of gemstones, precious-metal purity or physical condition; it authenticates the digital identity attached to the tagged object.

Veritas’s partners page names ATHLOS × Tiffany & Co. championship crowns as a deployment. The crowns are sterling silver, and winners are expected to tap one to view the authenticated story of the race. Veritas says that experience starts with ATHLOS London on September 18, 2026. This is a specific partner example, not evidence that every trophy or award uses the system.

Other public examples
Veritas’s LinkedIn company page describes a chip in LeBron’s first Nike shoe and a one-of-one leather deployment for Divine Design. Those examples show the platform being used across footwear and luxury leather, while the partners page supplies the clearest public evidence for a trophy-style object.
What is known about fragrance bottles
The public material reviewed does not identify a fragrance brand, bottle model or launch date for a Veritas deployment. Veritas’s Capsule format could be physically suitable for a small bottle or closure, but suitability is not proof of a live product. Until Veritas or a named fragrance partner publishes a release, claims that the chip already authenticates fragrance bottles should be considered unverified.

A cryptographic chip reduces one common weakness—copying a visible identifier—but it does not by itself establish that an item is legally authorized, undamaged or accurately described. The quality of the underlying registration and the brand’s handling of transfers remain important.
Digital Product Passports and the business model
Veritas presents the system as compatible with EU Digital Product Passport requirements and emphasizes interoperability. A DPP-style record can make information available beyond the initial sale, including repair, care and end-of-life data. “Compatible” and “interoperable” are product-positioning claims; legal compliance still depends on the final rules, the product category and how a brand implements its data systems.

This is a business-to-business platform rather than a consumer gadget sold as a do-it-yourself authenticity kit. Brands integrate the chips and software into manufacturing, fulfillment, customer service and resale workflows. Veritas’s public route to market is demo- and partner-led.
Funding and market context
TechCrunch reported a $1.75 million pre-seed round for Veritas in 2026, led by Seven Seven Six. The same report cited an estimated $30 billion in annual luxury-brand counterfeit losses and a $210 billion second-hand luxury market. Those figures are attributed market estimates, not measurements produced by Veritas.
What buyers should check
- Use an NFC-capable phone and tap the item itself, not a screenshot or forwarded link.
- Confirm that the displayed product details match the physical object, including model, materials and provenance.
- Look for a warning or inactive response if the item appears altered or the chip has been moved.
- Treat a valid digital record as one authentication signal; inspect condition, documentation and seller reliability separately.
- For fragrance bottles, ask for a manufacturer announcement or named partner evidence before assuming Veritas is installed.
Bottom line
Veritas has publicly documented a cryptographic NFC identity system for soft goods, hard luxury items and small objects, with jewelry and the ATHLOS championship crowns providing the clearest new applications. A smartphone can access the associated record, and Veritas says tampering may deactivate the chip. The fragrance-bottle portion of the expansion remains unconfirmed, so it should not be presented as an established deployment.
