Developers still use Stack Overflow alongside AI agents because a generated answer is a proposal, not proof. The site can help them inspect source material, compare a suggestion with a specific error or software version, and see how people have discussed or corrected a solution. Stack Overflow’s 2026 Developer Survey suggests the role is changing: many respondents ask AI agents, while some still visit Stack Overflow to check the sources behind AI answers.
Are developers still using Stack Overflow when AI can answer coding questions?
Yes, but not necessarily for the same tasks. Stack Overflow’s 2026 Developer Survey reports that 83% of respondents search online for answers and 70% ask an AI agent. For simple questions, 64% say they visit Stack Overflow less; 16% say they visit more to check the source of AI answers. The answer-seeking figures are based on 16,664 respondents.
These are self-reported survey results from Stack Overflow, not a measurement of all developers or proof that AI caused a change in behavior. The survey also reports that 73% of respondents who use AI coding assistants or agents use them daily; among AI users, 66% use coding agents and 63% use chatbots. Taken together, the figures describe a workflow in which AI and online search coexist, even as people rely less on the site for some straightforward questions.
Stack Overflow’s survey summary also reports that 93% of respondents require source attribution for trust in AI answers. It places Stack Overflow at 24% in a chart about work-related answer sources. That figure belongs to the chart’s specific context; it should not be read as overall site reach or a global usage rate.

What can Stack Overflow add to an AI-generated answer?
Evidence a reader can inspect
A chatbot may give a useful explanation quickly, but its answer can be plausible and still be wrong, outdated, or missing a relevant condition. When an answer points to a Stack Overflow post, readers can inspect the question, replies, comments, and voting history rather than relying only on the generated summary. Those signals offer context, not a guarantee: votes do not prove correctness, and an accepted or highly rated answer can become stale.
Details tied to a particular problem
Questions often describe the exact error, attempted fix, library version, or unusual environment that produced a problem. That specificity can help a developer decide whether a suggested fix applies to their case. A broad AI answer may not surface those distinctions unless the user supplies them, and a Stack Overflow post may itself omit details or describe an older version. Check the answer against current documentation and the code actually running in your environment.

Human discussion and correction
Stack Overflow’s Help Center says posts must not be generated by generative AI tools. It presents the policy as a way to limit wrong or misleading contributions, missing factors, and inadequate citations. The policy means answers submitted to the public site are expected to be human-authored and vetted; it does not make every contribution error-free.

When is Stack Overflow more useful, and when is an agent more convenient?
There is no established head-to-head result showing that one is better for every programming task. A practical choice depends on what you need to verify:

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- For a quick explanation or a first troubleshooting draft: an agent can respond conversationally and adapt when you provide more context.
- For checking where a claim came from: follow citations to the underlying documentation or discussion, then judge whether the source supports the answer.
- For a version-specific error or edge case: search for the exact error text, relevant version, and environment. A detailed community question may match your situation more closely than a general answer.
- For a fast-changing API or tool: check current official documentation as well as any older discussion. Neither a generated answer nor a popular post is automatically current.
- For a solution with consequential effects: reproduce it safely, test it, and review what it changes instead of treating either community votes or fluent AI prose as validation.
The most reliable workflow is to use an agent to explore or explain, then verify important claims against inspectable sources and your own test case. Stack Overflow is one possible part of that verification, not a universal source of truth.
How is Stack Overflow adapting to AI agents?
Stack Overflow announced Stack Overflow for Agents on June 10, 2026, describing it as an API-first knowledge exchange. Its initial post types are Questions for unsolved problems, TIL posts for debugging journeys and undocumented behavior, and Blueprints for reusable patterns. The proposed loop is to search existing material first, contribute when the archive has a gap, and verify findings. The announcement describes human orchestration and approval in the publishing flow; these are product intentions, not independently measured outcomes.

In a September 16, 2026 update, Stack Overflow added Playbooks for procedural workflows, a ChatGPT plugin, controls for whether and when agents can share, and read-only access for users working with proprietary material. The company says trust scores connect agent posts with user reputation and acknowledges that it is still validating whether the exchange provides real value to AI workflows. It put the uncertainty plainly: “We want conclusive and quantifiable proof of its value, and the only way to do that is to keep building.”
For organizations, Stack Internal is presented as a way to make private organizational knowledge available within existing coding assistants, APIs, and IDEs. That is a separate enterprise knowledge layer; it should not be confused with the public question-and-answer community.

What should developers know about AI content and automated access?
Posting AI-generated content
Stack Overflow Help Center’s policy, “What is this site’s policy on content generated by generative artificial intelligence tools?”, says: “Generative artificial intelligence (a.k.a. GPT, LLM, generative AI, genAI) tools may not be used to generate content for Stack Overflow.” The restriction concerns content submitted to the site, not using AI elsewhere in a developer’s workflow. The Help Center says posts determined to be AI-generated may be deleted and repeated infractions may lead to suspension.
Collecting content for AI development
The Stack Exchange Acceptable Use Policy restricts automated data collection and copying for AI development and related purposes unless express prior written consent has been obtained; it identifies a commercial license as one possible exception. This general rule does not establish whether any particular AI company has permission or a license.
Why Stack Overflow remains relevant
AI agents have reduced the need to visit Stack Overflow for some simple questions, according to the site’s 2026 survey. But developers still need to check claims, find context that matches their problem, and establish whether a proposed fix works. Stack Overflow’s archive and community discussion can support that work, while its newer agent products try to make the knowledge available in AI workflows. The value of that product strategy is still being tested, and the value of any individual answer still depends on its evidence and fit.
