Choose Ventoy when one USB drive needs to hold several installers, rescue environments, or live systems. Choose balenaEtcher when you want to write one selected image to a USB drive or SD card with a straightforward flash-and-verify workflow. They are not two versions of the same utility: Ventoy installs a boot menu and leaves a data partition for image files, while Etcher writes an image directly to removable media.

That workflow difference affects multiboot, firmware compatibility, Secure Boot, Linux persistence, maintenance, and ease of use. The best choice depends on the job, the image you need to boot, and the firmware policy of the target computer.

Ventoy vs balenaEtcher at a glance

Reader need Better starting point Why Important caveat
Several installers, rescue tools, or live images on one drive Ventoy It creates a boot menu from image files stored on the drive. Each image still has to work with the target computer and Ventoy’s boot method.
Write one selected operating-system image to USB or SD media balenaEtcher Its documented purpose is flashing an image and checking that the write completed correctly. It does not provide Ventoy’s image collection and boot menu.
Persistent changes in a Linux live session Ventoy, if the distribution supports persistence Ventoy lists Linux persistence support and can associate persistence data with a live image. It requires configuration, image support, and is not a backup.
Strict Secure Boot policy Check the target firmware before choosing Ventoy documents key-enrollment and firmware-specific requirements. Secure Boot behavior is not uniform across computers; Etcher does not remove those target-boot requirements.
Minimal file management after creation Etcher for one image; Ventoy for a maintained collection Etcher ends after a flash, while Ventoy lets you add and remove image files. “Easy” depends on whether you need one image or many.

Ventoy’s project describes it as an open-source tool for creating a bootable USB drive for ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x), and EFI files. Its repository lists MBR and GPT partition styles, several Legacy BIOS and UEFI architectures, and more than 1,300 project-tested ISO files; the repository does not state a publication year for that count. Etcher’s documentation describes flashing OS images to SD cards and USB drives and verifying the result. Those are project statements, not a guarantee that every image boots on every machine.

The workflow difference that determines the choice

How Ventoy works

Ventoy is installed onto a USB device first. The installation creates the Ventoy boot environment and a data area. You then copy supported image files to that data area as ordinary files. At startup, Ventoy displays those files in a boot menu; you select one and Ventoy attempts to launch it.

Adding another installer normally means copying another ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX, or EFI file. Removing one means deleting its file. You do not reformat or rewrite the whole drive for every new image. This is the reason Ventoy is the natural fit for a technician’s toolkit or a personal multiboot drive.

How balenaEtcher works

Etcher follows a single-image flashing workflow: choose an image, choose a USB drive or SD card, start the flash, and allow the application to verify the written data. The result is media prepared from that selected image. Replacing it with a different operating system generally means flashing the other image, which overwrites the target media.

Etcher’s documented role is image writing, not building a menu of independent images. Do not expect an Etcher-created drive to preserve a folder of installers as a selectable multiboot library.

Multiboot, image formats, and practical capacity

When Ventoy’s file model helps

A single Ventoy drive can hold multiple installers, recovery environments, hardware-diagnostic images, and live distributions, provided the drive has enough space. The project lists support for ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD(x), and EFI files. A boot menu lets you select the file at startup instead of rebuilding the drive for each one.

This arrangement also makes version management visible: you can keep two releases of an installer, rename files clearly, and remove obsolete images from the data partition. Keep checksums or release notes alongside the files if you need to verify provenance; a boot menu does not validate that an image is authentic.

Why there is no universal “right” USB size

Capacity depends on the number and size of the images, plus space for persistence data if you configure it. A drive that is sufficient for one small installer may be inadequate for several large operating-system images. Select capacity after totaling the files you intend to carry and leaving room for future additions. Neither project’s documentation supports one universal capacity recommendation.

Compatibility: formats, firmware, and host operating systems

Ventoy’s stated boot coverage

The Ventoy repository lists x86 Legacy BIOS, IA32 UEFI, x86_64 UEFI, ARM64 UEFI, and MIPS64EL UEFI support, along with MBR and GPT partition styles. That breadth is useful when one drive must serve different generations of computers. It is still a project capability list, not a promise that every image or firmware implementation will behave identically.

Ventoy reports more than 1,300 tested ISO files in its repository. Because the opened page gives no year for that figure and does not describe every test condition, treat it as a project-reported indication of coverage rather than an independent benchmark. An image can fail because of its own bootloader, a vendor-specific requirement, a graphics mode, storage-controller behavior, or the target machine’s firmware settings.

Etcher’s host-platform requirements

Etcher’s documentation lists these platforms for running the application:

  • Linux: most distributions on Intel 64-bit systems.
  • Windows: version 10 and later on Intel 64-bit systems.
  • macOS: version 10.13 and later, including Intel and Apple Silicon.

Those are host requirements for the flashing application. They do not guarantee that every image you write will boot on every target computer. The target still needs compatible firmware, an appropriate partition scheme, and a bootable image.

What compatibility means in practice

With Ventoy, compatibility has two layers: whether Ventoy can start on the computer, and whether the selected image can start through Ventoy. With Etcher, the application writes the image, but the image and target firmware determine whether the finished media boots. In either case, confirm the image publisher’s architecture and boot requirements before preparing media.

Secure Boot: the caveat that changes the recommendation

Secure Boot is a firmware policy, not a simple feature switch inside either application. Ventoy’s Secure Boot documentation says support was included by default starting with Ventoy 1.0.76, but also explains that behavior varies by machine. Some systems require enabling the firmware option labeled “Allow Microsoft 3rd Part UEFI CA”. Ventoy’s documented default policy allows all EFI files to boot without a check, and the project warns that its solution does not work perfectly on every computer.

The same documentation notes that Ventoy 1.1.13 and later require enrollment of a new key in response to the UEFI CA 2023 issue. Therefore, check the exact Ventoy release instructions and the target firmware’s Secure Boot menu rather than assuming that a version number alone guarantees success. Read the official Ventoy Secure Boot documentation before deploying a drive in a controlled environment.

Etcher does not create a multiboot Secure Boot layer. It writes the image you select, so the image’s own signed boot chain and the target firmware policy remain decisive. If a machine is locked to approved signatures, test the specific image and firmware combination or follow your organization’s enrollment policy.

Linux persistence: useful, optional, and limited

A normal live Linux image resets changes when you restart. Ventoy lists persistence support, allowing a compatible live image to use a separate persistence data file or partition so selected changes can survive reboots.

Persistence is not automatic for every distribution. The Ventoy persistence guide says the live image must support persistence and that plugin configuration is required. The guide identifies itself as independent, so use it to understand the concept and then confirm the syntax and requirements in the exact-version official plugin documentation. Persistence is also not a backup: corruption, an accidental deletion, or loss of the USB drive can remove the live environment and its stored changes.

Etcher’s documented flashing workflow does not provide a general multiboot persistence manager. If persistence is a requirement, start with Ventoy only after confirming that the chosen distribution supports the method.

Setting up Ventoy safely

Initial Ventoy installation changes the selected USB device and can erase its contents. The independent Ventoy installation guide advises using a drive that can be erased completely. Verify the device name and capacity in the Ventoy utility and in your operating system before confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up every file on the intended USB device. Do not rely on a drive letter alone if several removable devices are connected.
  2. Download the Ventoy release and follow its release-specific installation instructions.
  3. Open the Ventoy installer, select the intended USB device, and recheck the selection. Initial Install is different from Update; do not use Install casually on an existing drive that contains data you need.
  4. Confirm the erase warning only after verifying the device. Wait for the installation to finish.
  5. Open the new Ventoy data partition and copy the ISO, WIM, IMG, VHD/VHDX, or EFI files you want to carry. Copying is ordinary file management; do not flash each file separately.
  6. Safely eject the drive, boot the target computer from USB, and select an image from the Ventoy menu.
  7. If the image needs persistence, configure the appropriate plugin and persistence file only after checking the distribution’s support and the exact Ventoy documentation.

When updating a Ventoy drive, use the release’s documented update path and confirm whether the update preserves the data partition and image files. Keep a backup of important images before any update.

Writing one image with balenaEtcher

Etcher’s workflow is shorter because it has a single-image objective. The labels can vary slightly by release, but the documented sequence is:

  1. Install Etcher on a supported host platform: Linux on most Intel 64-bit distributions, Windows 10 or later on Intel 64-bit, or macOS 10.13 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon.
  2. Connect the USB drive or SD card and close applications that might be using it.
  3. Choose the downloaded operating-system image in Etcher.
  4. Select the target removable device. Check its model and capacity carefully; selecting the wrong disk can destroy unrelated data.
  5. Start the flash operation and approve the operating-system permission prompt if requested.
  6. Let Etcher complete its write verification. Do not remove the media while writing or verification is in progress.
  7. Eject the media through the operating system, then use the computer’s boot menu or firmware settings to start from it.

The verification step improves confidence that the image was written as intended, but it cannot repair an image that was incomplete or corrupted before you selected it. Obtain images from their publisher and follow any published checksum procedure.

Ease of use depends on the task

Etcher is simpler for a one-time flash

For a reader who has one image and one target device, Etcher minimizes decisions: select the image, select the media, flash, and verify. There is no boot-menu organization or persistence configuration to maintain. This makes it a sensible starting point for preparing a single installer or recovery card.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ventoy is simpler after initial setup

Ventoy has more involved first-run setup because it installs a boot environment and requires careful device selection. After that, adding another image is usually a file copy rather than another destructive flash. For repeated work, that can be less effort than recreating media each time.

Neither tool removes firmware decisions

You may still need to open a boot-selection menu, change UEFI settings, disable or accommodate a firmware restriction, or choose between Legacy and UEFI modes. A clean application interface does not guarantee a successful boot on the target computer.

Choosing by common scenarios

You maintain a repair or recovery kit

Start with Ventoy if the kit needs several operating-system installers, rescue environments, and diagnostic images on one drive. Organize files by purpose and version, and test the images on the types of firmware you expect to service.

You are installing one operating system once

Etcher is usually the more direct route: flash the selected image to a USB drive, verify it, and boot the target. Ventoy is unnecessary if you have no need to carry additional images.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need several Linux live environments

Ventoy is the better starting point for a collection, but check each distribution’s boot behavior. Add persistence only for distributions that explicitly support it, and keep important work elsewhere because persistence is not backup storage.

You work under strict Secure Boot controls

Check the target firmware’s accepted certificate authorities, the organization’s policy, and the Ventoy release notes before committing to Ventoy. If the selected image has its own approved signed boot chain, Etcher’s direct-write approach may be operationally simpler, but it still cannot override a policy that rejects the image.

Troubleshooting and failure points

The USB drive does not appear in the boot menu

  • Reconnect the drive directly rather than through an unpowered hub.
  • Open the firmware boot menu and confirm that USB boot is enabled.
  • Check whether the computer is using UEFI or Legacy mode and whether the drive’s partition style and image support that mode.
  • On a Ventoy drive, revisit Secure Boot requirements and the “Allow Microsoft 3rd Part UEFI CA” option described in Ventoy’s documentation.

Ventoy appears, but one image will not start

  • Confirm that the file is complete and came from the image publisher.
  • Check whether the image supports the target architecture and firmware mode.
  • Try the image’s own documented boot method or a current release of the image; Ventoy’s project-tested count does not cover every release.
  • Review Ventoy’s compatibility and Secure Boot notes for the target machine.

The Etcher flash fails or verification reports an error

  • Re-download the image and compare its checksum if the publisher supplies one.
  • Try another USB port or a known-good removable device.
  • Make sure no other process is locking the target drive.
  • Repeat the device-selection check before starting another destructive write.

A persistent Linux session loses changes

  • Confirm that the distribution supports persistence.
  • Check that the persistence plugin configuration matches the image and the Ventoy version.
  • Ensure the persistence data has enough free space and that the USB device was safely ejected.
  • Keep a separate backup; persistence is a convenience layer, not a data-protection strategy.

Maintenance, updates, and data safety

Ventoy separates the boot environment from the image files, so an update is conceptually different from initial installation. Use the release’s update instructions, verify that you selected the existing Ventoy device, and back up important images first. Keep image filenames understandable and remove obsolete releases to avoid booting the wrong version.

Etcher-created media is tied to the image you last flashed. When you need a different image, assume the existing contents will be replaced and copy off any files you need. In both workflows, eject media safely and store a recovery copy of critical installers on another device.

Final decision

Ventoy wins for multiboot: it turns one USB device into a selectable collection of supported image files and can provide Linux persistence when the image and configuration support it. Its trade-offs are a more consequential initial installation, image-by-image compatibility checks, and Secure Boot caveats that vary by firmware and release.

balenaEtcher wins for a single-image job: its purpose-built flash-and-verify sequence is easier to understand when you need one installer on a USB drive or SD card. It does not replace Ventoy’s multiboot menu or file-based collection model. Choose the workflow that matches the media you need to create, then validate the specific image and target computer rather than treating either tool as universally compatible.
