Ventoy can store multiple bootable image files on one drive, but Valve’s documented SteamOS recovery process writes the recovery image directly to a USB key. The sources available do not confirm that the Steam Deck recovery image boots through Ventoy. If you need a dependable recovery route, use Valve’s documented method; treat Ventoy as a separate multi-image tool unless you verify the recovery workflow yourself.
What Ventoy does—and what it does not establish
Ventoy is installed on a selected drive. After that, you copy supported image files to its data partition and choose one from Ventoy’s boot menu. Its FAQ says Ventoy searches the first partition recursively for image files, so files can be organized in folders. Ventoy describes the approach as: “With Ventoy, you don’t need to format the disk over and over, just drag-and-drop files to the USB drive and boot them directly.” Ventoy’s official homepage and FAQ explain the project’s workflow.
That general capability is not proof that every image works. Ventoy’s homepage reports more than 1,400 image files tested and support for more than 90% of DistroWatch distributions; those are Ventoy project figures, not independent tests and not confirmation of the Steam Deck recovery image. The Ventoy project repository lists SteamOS among tested operating systems, but does not specify Valve’s official Deck recovery image or verify booting it from the Ventoy menu.

Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions specify a USB key with at least 8 GB of capacity and describe writing the official recovery image to that key. Valve’s stated creation methods are Rufus on Windows and Balena Etcher on macOS or Linux. The USB drive can connect directly to the Deck or through a hub.
#1 Best Overall
- High-speed USB 3.0 performance of up to 150MB/s(1) [(1) Write to drive up to 15x faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s); varies by drive capacity. Up to 150MB/s read speed. USB 3.0 port required. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, usage conditions, and other factors; 1MB=1,000,000 bytes]
- Transfer a full-length movie in less than 30 seconds(2) [(2) Based on 1.2GB MPEG-4 video transfer with USB 3.0 host device. Results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors]
- Transfer to drive up to 15 times faster than standard USB 2.0 drives(1)
- Sleek, durable metal casing
- Easy-to-use password protection for your private files(3) [(3)Password protection uses 128-bit AES encryption and is supported by Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, and Mac OS X v10.9 plus; Software download required for Mac, visit the SanDisk SecureAccess support page]
- Download Valve’s official Steam Deck recovery image from the support page and write it to the USB key using the method Valve specifies for your computer’s operating system.
- Shut down the Steam Deck completely, then connect the prepared recovery USB drive, directly or through a hub.
- Hold the Deck’s Volume Up button while pressing Power to open the BIOS menu. Choose Boot Manager.
- Select the EFI USB Device to start the recovery environment, then follow Valve’s on-screen recovery instructions.
This is the documented recovery workflow. The cited Valve instructions do not describe using Ventoy, and the available Ventoy material does not verify that the official recovery image boots through Ventoy. Do not assume that the general support for Linux or SteamOS images guarantees this particular recovery path.
Choose between a dedicated recovery USB and a Ventoy drive
| Choice | Best fit | What is established | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated SteamOS recovery USB | Someone preparing to repair or reinstall SteamOS using Valve’s documented instructions | Valve specifies an 8 GB minimum, image-writing methods for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and the Deck’s Boot Manager sequence. | The documented process makes a recovery drive; it is not presented as a multi-image Ventoy drive. |
| Ventoy multi-image drive | Someone who wants one drive for multiple supported bootable images | Ventoy’s official documentation describes installing Ventoy, copying image files to the data partition, and selecting an image at boot. | Booting Valve’s official Steam Deck recovery image through Ventoy is not verified by the cited sources. |
A USB-C flash drive is convenient if it connects to your Deck without an adapter. Valve’s 8 GB minimum applies to its recovery media; more capacity is a practical convenience if you also want to carry other images, not a Valve requirement. If the drive’s connector does not fit, Valve permits using a hub. A portable SSD is another capacity option for carrying many or large images; Ventoy lists SSD/NVMe storage support and support for files larger than 4 GB on its homepage.

Install or update Ventoy without losing the wrong data
Installing Ventoy erases all data on the selected disk. Back up the drive first, and carefully confirm the target device before proceeding. For the current steps and interface, use Ventoy’s installation guide.
- Back up any files on the intended drive and identify that drive by its device name and capacity.
- Follow the Ventoy installation guide for your operating system, double-check the selected disk, and install Ventoy to that disk.
- After installation, copy supported image files to Ventoy’s data partition. Organize them in folders if useful; Ventoy says it searches that first partition recursively.
- Boot from the drive and select an image from the Ventoy menu. Image support can vary, so do not treat Ventoy’s broad compatibility claims as confirmation for an image it does not specifically identify.
When updating an existing Ventoy installation, use the guide’s Update operation rather than performing a fresh installation: Ventoy says Update keeps the data partition. Even so, keep a backup of anything important before changing boot media.

Practical recommendation
For Steam Deck recovery, prepare a dedicated USB using Valve’s image-writing instructions. Use Ventoy when the goal is to keep multiple bootable images together, but do not rely on it for Deck recovery unless you have verified that the official recovery image works through that setup. The distinction is the key one: Ventoy’s multi-image design is useful, but it does not replace confirmation of a specific recovery workflow.
