For an official Steam Deck recovery USB, use the writer Valve documents for the computer you have: Rufus on Windows, balenaEtcher on macOS, or balenaEtcher or a bzcat/dd command on Linux. Use an empty USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Writing the recovery image overwrites the selected drive, so copy off anything you need before you start.
Ventoy is not included in Valve’s current recovery procedure. That does not prove Ventoy is incompatible, but it does mean the official, supported path is to write the image directly with one of Valve’s listed methods.
Which Ventoy alternative should you use?
The best choice is determined by the operating system on the computer creating the media and whether you prefer a graphical app or a terminal. Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair instructions identify the following methods:
| Computer used to create the USB | Valve-documented method | Best fit | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows | Rufus | Readers who want a graphical workflow | Confirm the displayed USB model and capacity before starting; the target is formatted and overwritten. |
| macOS | balenaEtcher | Readers who want a graphical workflow | Select the correct removable drive, not an internal disk or another external drive. |
| Linux | balenaEtcher | Readers who prefer a graphical workflow | Check the target drive carefully before confirming. |
| Linux | bzcat/dd |
Experienced users comfortable identifying block devices | A mistake in the output device can erase an internal disk; use the whole USB device rather than one of its partitions. |
There is no published evidence in the cited procedures that one of these methods is faster or has a higher success rate than the others. Choose the documented option that matches your host computer.

Why Ventoy is not the official recommendation
Ventoy is designed to boot many image files from a multi-boot USB. A Steam Deck recovery drive, however, is created by writing Valve’s recovery image directly to the selected USB. Valve’s current instructions name Rufus, balenaEtcher and a Linux command-line method; they do not name Ventoy.
A separate procedure guide at SteamOS.Club likewise treats Ventoy as undocumented for this specific workflow and says it has not been physically validated with a USB and a Steam Deck boot. Its compressed-image example was simulated against a regular file rather than a physical drive. That is an evidence limitation, not proof that Ventoy always fails. If you need the recovery process with the clearest support from Valve, write the image directly with one of the listed tools.
What you need before creating the media
- A SteamOS recovery image downloaded from Valve’s current SteamOS Installation and Repair page.
- A USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Use a larger drive if that is what you have, but capacity alone does not establish speed or reliability.
- A computer running Windows, macOS or Linux, with permission to write to removable storage.
- A backup of every file on the USB. The writing operation formats the selected drive and destroys its existing contents, including a Ventoy installation and any files stored on it.
- An adapter only when the connector and port require one. For example, a USB-A flash drive may need a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter if the available connection is USB-C. Many setups do not need an adapter.
Preparing the USB does not itself modify the Steam Deck. The Deck is affected only after you boot from the media and choose a recovery action.

- Open Valve’s SteamOS Installation and Repair support page.
- Download the recovery image offered there, using the current file and instructions shown by Valve rather than an image from an unofficial mirror.
- Save the download where your writing utility can access it. On Linux, note whether the file is compressed; Valve’s command-line option uses
bzcattogether withddfor a compressed image. - Do not select the USB as the download location unless you have already backed it up. The next step will overwrite it.
Keep the downloaded file until the Deck has successfully booted the recovery environment. If you need to recreate the media, you can write the same local file again without downloading it a second time.
Windows: create the USB with Rufus
Rufus is the Windows writer named in Valve’s procedure. The exact labels can change between Rufus releases, but the operation is always the same: choose Valve’s image, choose the removable drive, and start the write.

- 10 Pack USB Sticks: 10 pieces of USB flash drives are fit for a variety of scenarios. Whether the flash drives USB are used as school supplies for high school students to backup data storaged in USB jump drives or music USB flash drive for car, zip drive can meet the basic storage needs. USB drive pack of 10 has a higher cost performance. USB flash drive pack of 10 is suitable for ordinary users with appropriate needs, but also for special groups such as companies, schools or other organizations that need a large number of U disks. In short, thumb drives can meet the needs of different customers.
- Swivel Design: With the 360° swivel design, all the ports of the thumb drives 10 pack can be hidden inside the metal casing. When needed, simply swivel the casing gently and the ports will automatically expose, making it convenient for you to insert and remove. This design is not only fashionable and beautiful but also more user-friendly, whether you'd like your flash drive for photos, flash drive for video storage, or memory sticks for computers. In addition, the swivel design can effectively protect the interface from damage and pollution, increasing the service life of the flash USB drive.
- Portability: The small hole on the thumbdrive USB is designed for lanyards, which is convenient to carry. Besides, the USB flash drive keychain can also be tied through the small hole to prevent loss. This design is very thoughtful and reflects the humanized design concept of the memorias USB flash drive.
- Plug and Play: You can use the computer storage flash drive immediately for data storage or backup without any additional installation after inserting it into the computer. This plug and play feature makes the laptop storage drive a very convenient external ssd. You can copy the required data files to the external drive at any time without worrying about computer system compatibility issues. In addition, the design of the external flash drive enables it to be quickly recognized by the system after being inserted into the computer. (NOTE: Please check if your device has a USB-A port before purchasing. If not, a USB-C hub is needed.)
- FAT32 format: The default system format for 8GB flash drive is FAT32. FAT32 USB flash drive is widely applicable, such as in televisions, DVD players, vehicles, printers, embroidery machines, etc. Be patient if you have problems with system recognition. It may take some time for initial recognition, but it will happen.
- Connect the spare USB drive to the Windows computer.
- Open Rufus and inspect the device field. Match the displayed model and capacity to the physical drive you intend to erase. Disconnect other removable drives if that makes identification easier.
- Use Rufus’s image-selection control to choose the recovery image downloaded from Valve.
- Review the target device one more time. Do not proceed if the capacity or model corresponds to an internal disk or a different external drive.
- Start the write and accept the warning that the selected drive will be erased. Allow the operation to finish; do not unplug the drive while Rufus is writing.
- Safely eject the USB from Windows after Rufus reports completion.
If Rufus presents additional image-writing choices, follow the mode recommended by its current prompt for the selected SteamOS image. Valve’s requirement is that the recovery image be written to the USB; do not turn the drive into a normal file-copy volume.
macOS: create the USB with balenaEtcher
Valve lists balenaEtcher for macOS. Etcher’s workflow has three selections: the recovery image, the target drive and the write action.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the spare USB drive. Use a USB-C drive directly, or a suitable adapter for a USB-A drive and the Mac’s available port.
- Open balenaEtcher and choose the option to select an image.
- Select the recovery image downloaded from Valve.
- Choose the USB drive as the target. Check its name and capacity carefully; macOS may list several external volumes.
- Start the flash operation and approve macOS permissions if requested.
- Wait for writing and verification to finish before ejecting the drive. If macOS reports that the disk cannot be read after writing, do not reformat it; a recovery image does not have to look like a normal macOS data volume.
Use Disk Utility only to identify the physical drive or eject it. Do not erase or reformat the written recovery media after Etcher finishes.
Linux graphical method: balenaEtcher
On Linux, balenaEtcher provides the same image-selection process as on macOS and avoids manual device-name entry.
- Insert the spare USB and close file-manager windows that might be using it.
- Open balenaEtcher and select Valve’s recovery image.
- Select the USB by checking its model and capacity.
- Start the write and authenticate if your desktop asks for administrator permission.
- Wait for completion and verification, then eject the USB through the desktop before removing it.
Do not select an individual mounted partition when the application asks for a device. The target should be the removable USB itself, and the drive must have at least 8 GB of capacity.

Linux command line: using bzcat and dd
Valve also documents a command-line route for Linux. It is useful on a headless system or when you do not want a graphical writer, but it carries the highest risk of selecting the wrong disk.

1. Identify the whole USB device
Before inserting the drive, list the available devices with your distribution’s disk tool, then insert the USB and list them again. Identify the newly appeared removable device by its capacity and model. The destination must be the whole device, such as /dev/sdX or an equivalent device name, not a partition such as /dev/sdX1. Device letters can change after reconnecting, so do not rely on an old note.
2. Unmount its partitions
Close file-manager windows and unmount any partitions belonging to the USB. Unmounting prevents the desktop from writing to the drive while the image is being copied; it does not erase the device by itself.
3. Stream the compressed image to the device
If Valve’s download is a bzip2-compressed image, a command in the documented form is:
bzcat steamdeck-recovery.img.bz2 | sudo dd of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress conv=fsync
Use the actual filename shown on your computer and replace /dev/sdX with the verified whole USB device. The names in this example are deliberately generic; typing them literally will not select your drive. If the downloaded file is not bzip2-compressed, follow the format and command shown on Valve’s current page instead of forcing it through bzcat.

- FAT32 Format: The default file system for 8GB flash drives is FAT32, providing read/write compatibility with both Windows and macOS. This format is ideal for storing music, photos, videos, software installers and general document files. Pro Tip: Maximize performance by reformatting to your optimal file system.(FAT32: Universal compatibility (files under 4GB); exFAT: Cross-platform large file support; NTFS: Advanced Windows features (encryption/compression))
- LED Indicator: The end of the USB storage flash drive is designed with an indicator. The LED indicator lights up when you plug the zip drive usb into the devices, the light blinks while write/read activities are in process. In this case, do not remove the USB drive pack. Otherwise, data integrity and the service life of the USB drives are affected.
4. Flush writes and eject
Let dd reach its prompt again, then run:
sync
Safely eject the device with your desktop or disk utility before removing it. Interrupting dd, unplugging the drive during the copy or skipping the final flush can leave incomplete media.
What happens to an existing Ventoy drive?
Writing the recovery image is not an additive operation. It replaces the USB’s existing layout, so a drive that currently boots Ventoy should be treated as disposable for this task. Copy personal files and any other image files elsewhere first. If preserving the multi-boot setup is important, use a different USB for SteamOS recovery rather than trying to combine both purposes on one drive.
The official procedure does not describe a supported way to place the recovery image in a Ventoy menu while retaining Ventoy’s original installation. Because Ventoy is not part of Valve’s instructions and has not been physically validated for this workflow in the secondary guide, direct writing is the lower-uncertainty choice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check the result without confusing integrity and authenticity
Some writers verify that data read back from the USB matches the image they just wrote. A byte-for-byte comparison can detect an incomplete or corrupted write, but it answers only whether the USB matches your local download.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →It does not establish that the download itself came from Valve. Authentication requires a trusted checksum or signature published by Valve and a comparison performed against that expected value. Do not treat a successful writer verification, or a comparison with the same local file, as proof of authenticity when no trusted expected value is available.

Boot the Steam Deck from the recovery USB
- Shut down the Steam Deck completely rather than leaving it in sleep mode.
- Connect the prepared USB. If the drive’s connector does not match the available port, attach the appropriate adapter; an adapter is conditional, not universal.
- Use the Deck’s boot-selection procedure described in Valve’s current support instructions to start from the USB.
- Wait for the SteamOS recovery environment to load. If the Deck returns to the normal system, power it off and check that the USB is fully inserted and was written successfully.
Creating the media and using it are separate stages. The data consequences begin when you select an action in the recovery environment, not when the image is written on your computer.
Understand the recovery choices before clicking one
Repair or reinstall while attempting to preserve content
Valve describes a repair option that attempts to preserve games and personal content while reinstalling SteamOS. “Attempts to preserve” is important: a repair is not a substitute for a current backup, and no recovery process should be started before you understand which data is available elsewhere.
Re-image Device
Valve describes “Re-image Device” as a factory reset. It removes user data, installed games, applications and the operating system, then installs the standard SteamOS image. Choose it only when that loss is acceptable or your backup and troubleshooting plan calls for a complete reset.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Read Valve’s current descriptions in the recovery environment before selecting an option. The USB-writing decision and the Deck-reset decision should be treated independently: selecting the wrong USB can erase a computer drive, while selecting re-image can erase the Deck’s local content.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely check | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| The writer shows several drives | The wrong removable device may be selected. | Compare model and capacity, disconnect unrelated drives and restart the selection. |
| The USB appears smaller or unreadable after writing | A recovery image does not present as a normal data volume. | Do not reformat it merely because the desktop cannot browse it; eject it and test it in the Deck. |
| The writer refuses the drive for insufficient space | The USB is below Valve’s 8 GB minimum or its advertised capacity is misleading. | Use another drive that meets or exceeds 8 GB. |
| The Deck does not boot the USB | The image may not have been written directly, the copy may have been interrupted, or the adapter/connection may be unreliable. | Recreate the media with the documented writer for your host, let verification and flushing finish, then retry with a secure connection. |
| The Linux command reports an error | The file may not match the compression expected by bzcat, or the destination may be mounted or mistyped. |
Confirm the image format on Valve’s page, unmount the USB partitions and re-check the whole-device path before running the command again. |
| The recovery menu appears but the Deck’s content is at risk | The selected recovery action may be a factory re-image. | Stop and read Valve’s description of each option; use repair when its preservation goal matches your situation and reserve re-image for a deliberate reset. |
A practical decision guide
- Windows computer: use Rufus, because it is the writer Valve names for Windows.
- Mac computer: use balenaEtcher and verify the removable target before flashing.
- Linux computer, graphical preference: use balenaEtcher.
- Linux computer, terminal preference: use Valve’s
bzcat/ddmethod only after identifying the whole USB device with confidence. - You need to keep your Ventoy collection intact: use a separate spare USB; do not overwrite the Ventoy drive.
- Your USB has a different connector from the Deck: add a compatible USB-A-to-USB-C adapter only if the ports require it.
Frequently overlooked safety checks
- Confirm the drive’s model and capacity immediately before the final confirmation, not only when you first plug it in.
- Keep the USB’s original files backed up because the image-writing step is destructive.
- Use the recovery image from Valve’s support page and keep the download until recovery succeeds.
- Do not infer that Ventoy is supported merely because it can boot other disk images.
- Do not infer that a writer’s verification proves the download is authentic; that requires a trusted Valve checksum or signature.
- Do not unplug the drive during writing, verification or the final Linux
sync. - Before choosing a recovery action on the Deck, distinguish a repair attempt from the factory-reset behavior of re-imaging.
