To change a video’s background in VEGAS Pro, use Chroma Key when the subject was filmed against a distinct, solid-color backdrop. For ordinary footage, isolate the subject with a Bézier mask or Smart Mask, then place the replacement image or video on a lower timeline track. The right method depends on the shot, and neither keying nor masking guarantees clean edges automatically.
Choose a method that fits your footage

Replace a colored background with Chroma Key
- Place the replacement background on a lower track. Add the image or video that should appear behind the subject to the timeline.
- Put the foreground clip on a track above it. The upper track appears over the lower one; removing the chosen background color lets the replacement show through.
- Apply Chroma Key to the foreground event. Adjust its controls while viewing the composite. Control names and numeric settings depend on the installed version, and there is no universal setting that suits every clip.
- Review the result across the full clip. Check edges and motion, not just a single frame, and adjust the key where necessary.
A distinct, consistent backdrop gives the key a clearer color to remove. A green screen is a recording aid, not a requirement for editing footage you already have.

Change the background in footage without a green screen
Draw a Bézier mask
Use Bézier masking when a manually defined boundary suits the shot. Create a mask around the subject, place the new background on a lower track, and inspect the mask through the clip. Movement can make an outline that fits one frame unsuitable later, so check the subject’s edges as the shot progresses.

Try Smart Mask where available
Smart Mask is another VEGAS feature for identifying objects and creating masks. Its presence does not mean every subject will be identified perfectly: inspect the resulting isolation and correct it if needed. Feature availability may vary by installed version or edition.
Composite separate foreground and background assets
When the foreground and replacement background are already separate, the basic arrangement is the background on a lower timeline track and the foreground on a track above it. VEGAS’s overlay tutorial demonstrates this layer order. The upper clip will cover the lower one wherever it is opaque, so use the appropriate compositing or positioning controls to expose the background as needed. Picture In Picture is one option the tutorial demonstrates for resizing or repositioning an overlay.

When depth or tracking workflows make sense
Z-Depth for a depth-based boundary
VEGAS describes Z-Depth as a way to define a boundary between foreground and background. Consider it when the separation you need is based on depth rather than a single backdrop color or a manually drawn outline; it is not a required step for ordinary layered composites.

Planar tracking for motion
Tracking can help in compositing workflows where an element needs to follow movement in a scene. VEGAS’s training materials cover tracked layers and Mocha VEGAS planar tracking, but a simple background replacement does not automatically require tracking. Check the composite before finishing
- Watch the entire clip to catch edges that change as the subject moves.
- Confirm the replacement background appears beneath the foreground wherever the key or mask removes the original backdrop.
- Review how the subject’s edges sit against the new scene, and adjust the key or mask if the isolation needs work.
- Check the controls and feature availability in your installed VEGAS edition rather than assuming every version has identical options.
