Yes, a bee-free honey formulation can reproduce important antibacterial mechanisms associated with mānuka honey in laboratory tests. Aston University researchers reported on 15 October 2026 that specially formulated sugar syrups containing methylglyoxal (MGO) and enzyme systems that generate hydrogen peroxide inhibited growth of, and in the strongest formulation killed, cultured Mycobacterium abscessus. The result is promising, but it does not yet show that vegan honey works in people, is safe on wounds, or is available as an approved food or medicine.
What the Aston University study actually tested
The team, led by Dr Jonathan Cox, a senior lecturer in biosciences, made artificial honey without any bee-derived ingredient. The base was a sugar syrup designed to approximate honey’s consistency, carbohydrate structure and taste, including sugar and inulin.
The Aston University study tested different antimicrobial additions against cultured Mycobacterium abscessus, a bacterium that can be difficult to treat because of its drug resistance. The most effective laboratory formulations combined two systems:

- An enzyme-based peroxide system: components that generate hydrogen peroxide, providing a separate antimicrobial pathway.
The reported outcomes included both growth inhibition and bactericidal activity. In other words, the formulations did more than slow bacterial multiplication: the best tested combinations killed the cultured organism under the study’s in-vitro conditions.

The release and PubMed abstract do not report a standalone percentage of bacteria killed, a formulation sample-size figure, dosing instructions or a human-trial result. Those omissions matter: a laboratory finding cannot be converted into a treatment claim without safety, dosing and clinical studies.
Why mānuka honey is the benchmark
Mānuka honey is produced by bees that pollinate the New Zealand mānuka bush. Its best-known non-peroxide antibacterial activity is linked to MGO. As honey matures, MGO can form from dihydroxyacetone present in the nectar.

Honey can also act through hydrogen peroxide, which is generated by enzyme activity. These are distinct mechanisms, so combining MGO with controlled peroxide generation gives an artificial formulation a way to mimic more than one contributor to natural honey’s activity.

Supporting work on 80 Australian Leptospermum honey samples found therapeutically useful non-peroxide antibacterial activity in some samples, including L. liversidgei and L. polygalifolium. That finding also illustrates why natural honey is not chemically identical from jar to jar: plant source, maturation and batch composition can change activity.

What “similar antimicrobial properties” does—and does not—mean
The phrase means that a designed bee-free matrix can use mechanisms associated with honey and show antibacterial effects in a controlled assay. It does not mean the product has been proven equivalent to medical-grade mānuka honey, suitable for consumption, or appropriate for applying to an open wound.

- how much MGO is required and how quickly the peroxide system generates hydrogen peroxide;
- whether the activity remains stable during storage and across manufacturing batches;
- whether the formulation harms human skin, wound tissue or beneficial microbes at effective concentrations;
- activity against additional clinically important bacteria, not only the tested M. abscessus cultures; and
- results from appropriately designed animal and human studies, followed by the relevant regulatory review.
Why a reproducible vegan version could matter
Natural mānuka honey can be costly and its antibacterial chemistry varies between batches. A defined, bee-free recipe could make it easier to control MGO and peroxide levels, standardise manufacturing and avoid relying on bee-derived ingredients. It could also support research into honey-inspired materials for people who require vegan products or manufacturers seeking a more predictable supply.
Dr Cox said the longer-term possibility is sustainable honey-inspired antimicrobial products for wound care or other topical applications without bee-derived ingredients. He also said the work may clarify how natural honey functions and help guide next-generation antimicrobial therapies. Those are development goals, not current product claims.

How to judge future vegan honey claims
When a commercial or academic formulation is announced, look for evidence in six areas rather than relying on the words “honey-like” or “antibacterial”:
- Organism and assay: identify the exact bacterial strain, culture conditions and test method.
- Type of effect: distinguish growth inhibition from a demonstrated bactericidal effect.
- Active chemistry: check the MGO concentration and the enzyme or other system used to generate hydrogen peroxide.
- Reproducibility: look for independent batches, shelf-life data and stability after manufacturing and storage.
- Compatibility: require toxicity and wound-tissue testing at the concentrations that inhibit bacteria.
- Clinical validation: give greatest weight to animal and human studies, not cell-culture results alone.
Can you buy or use it as a treatment now?
No approved retail vegan antimicrobial honey or wound-care product is established by the cited announcement and study. The work concerns experimental formulations in the laboratory. Consumers should not substitute a homemade sugar-and-MGO mixture for medical care, apply experimental ingredients to wounds, or infer a safe dose from an in-vitro result. Anyone with a suspected infection should follow advice from a qualified clinician.
