Vaultbreakers is different because extraction—not simply surviving another randomized run—is the center of its design. You enter a dangerous fantasy mission, fight through enemies and events, recover relics or Artifacts, and try to escape. The developer is also testing a deliberate split between safer PvE play and higher-risk PvPvE, where other players can threaten your haul. That makes Vaultbreakers an evolving extraction action RPG with roguelike-style replayability rather than a straightforward hero-based co-op roguelike.

Its free Steam demo is available now, but the complete game is still in development. BetaDwarf currently targets 2027 for a PC-and-console release and says it plans a premium launch, while also warning that those plans can change. The comparison below separates what you can play today from announced features and explains how the concept differs from the released co-op action roguelike Ravenswatch.

What Vaultbreakers is trying to be

Vaultbreakers is presented by developer BetaDwarf as a top-down fantasy extraction action RPG. The basic promise is not just to clear a sequence of rooms and watch a run end in victory or defeat. Instead, each mission asks you to balance progress against the danger of staying longer: fight, find valuable objectives, and get out before the mission takes everything from you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The developer’s official site describes missions containing enemies, dynamic events, loot or crafting, perks, abilities and Artifacts. A publishing announcement says the adventure revolves around recovering relics and escaping after boss fights. These are announced design goals, not a final feature list; the game is still being built and its systems may change before release.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That distinction matters when comparing Vaultbreakers with established co-op roguelikes. A conventional action roguelike usually treats the run itself as the complete unit: build a character, defeat encounters, reach the end of a chapter or die, then begin another run. Vaultbreakers adds an extraction decision. Valuable progress has to be carried out of the mission, so success depends on both combat ability and knowing when to leave.

How the announced mission loop works

Enter a dangerous fantasy mission

Players begin by choosing a character and entering a mission in a hostile fantasy world. The top-down camera supports the familiar readability of twin-stick and mouse-driven action games: you can see groups of enemies, terrain, pickups and threats around your team. The announced structure combines combat with exploration rather than reducing every objective to a linear boss corridor.

Dynamic events are part of the stated design. In practice, that means a mission is intended to change as you move through it, presenting opportunities or complications that can alter your route and your risk calculation. Because the game is unfinished, the precise event catalogue, frequency and rewards are not fixed specifications.

Recover loot, relics and Artifacts

Vaultbreakers’ rewards are meant to give every expedition a reason to push farther. The developer refers to loot or crafting, perks and abilities, while the publisher emphasizes relic recovery and the collection of Artifacts. These terms point to several layers of value: immediate equipment or materials, character improvements and special objects worth extracting.

The important difference is that the reward is tied to getting home. In a standard run-based game, a powerful item often helps only inside the current attempt or is converted automatically into permanent progression after death. Vaultbreakers’ extraction framing makes the return trip part of the objective. A team that defeats a boss but cannot safely escape has not necessarily converted that achievement into a successful haul.

Choose between PvE and PvPvE pressure

BetaDwarf’s test communications describe separate PvE Adventure/Core modes and a higher-risk PvPvE Breaker mode. PvE keeps the threat focused on the world’s enemies and mission events. PvPvE adds the possibility that another player or team can contest the same space while monsters remain active.

An October 2026 Steam announcement says Breaker is designed around greater risk and reward and that players can lose carried items when they die. Treat this as a test-era description rather than a guaranteed final rule: the mode is still evolving, and the developer can rebalance loss, rewards or matchmaking before launch.

This optional split is one of Vaultbreakers’ clearest differentiators. It lets a group decide whether it wants cooperative exploration without direct player interference or the tension of an extraction match in which every fight may expose its position and every extra item increases the cost of failure.

What you can play in the current demo

BetaDwarf’s October 8, 2026 announcement states: “The Demo is free on Steam right now.” The demo is a bounded preview, not the finished game. It includes two playable characters, a portion of the Wolfswood area, quests through the first Vaultbreak and co-op for up to two friends. That means the maximum party is three players total, including you.

The publisher estimates that the available content can provide up to seven hours of play. That is the publisher’s estimate, not an independently measured completion time, and your duration will vary with exploration, difficulty and whether you replay missions with different teammates.

Legacy Points earned in the demo are said to carry over. The carry-over promise gives the preview more weight than a disposable tutorial, but it should still be read as a current plan. Progression rules, resets and the exact relationship between demo progress and the final release can change during development.

What the demo can answer

  • Whether the top-down combat feels readable and satisfying for your group.
  • Whether extracting with rewards is more appealing to you than simply completing a combat run.
  • How a three-player team divides movement, combat and objective work.
  • Whether the available characters and Wolfswood quests provide enough variety for repeated sessions.
  • How comfortable you are with playing a work-in-progress build whose balance and systems can change.

What the demo cannot settle

  • The final number of missions, regions, enemies or dynamic events.
  • The finished PvPvE rules, including how item loss and rewards will be tuned.
  • The complete roster, endgame structure, platform parity or launch price.
  • Whether all announced systems will remain in their current form by the targeted 2027 release.

Vaultbreakers and Ravenswatch: a fact-based comparison

Ravenswatch is a useful comparison because it is a released top-down co-op action roguelike with clearly documented hero and multiplayer features. It is not a perfect one-to-one match: Nintendo’s listing does not describe an extraction or PvPvE mode, while Vaultbreakers is still in development.

What sets Vaultbreakers apart

1. Extraction changes the meaning of success

In many co-op action roguelikes, the decisive question is whether your team can defeat the next encounter. Vaultbreakers adds a second question: can you leave with what you found? That creates a different rhythm. You may know that another fight could produce better loot, yet also recognize that your current haul is already valuable enough to protect.

The result is a strategic layer between encounters. Route planning, retreat timing and team discipline matter alongside damage output. A player who prefers constant forward momentum may find extraction frustrating; a player who enjoys weighing uncertain rewards against a secure exit may find it more compelling than a conventional run.

2. PvPvE is optional rather than universal

The announced mode split gives Vaultbreakers a way to serve two different moods. Adventure/Core-style PvE can support a cooperative group that wants to learn the map, experiment with builds or play without opponents. Breaker is intended for teams that want the possibility of losing carried items in exchange for higher stakes and rewards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That separation also makes the comparison with Ravenswatch more precise. The latter’s listed challenge comes from enemies, map progression and escalating run decisions. Vaultbreakers can add human unpredictability, but only when players enter the mode built for it.

3. The party is smaller in the demo

A three-player ceiling changes encounter design and social logistics. It is easier to keep a small group together, assign complementary roles and communicate without one person being left behind. It also means a four-person group cannot bring everyone into the current demo, whereas Nintendo lists online sessions of up to four for Ravenswatch.

This is a practical difference rather than a quality ranking. Couples, trios and solo players may find the current Vaultbreakers format natural. Groups organized around four regular players will need to account for the smaller demo party and wait for any later changes to the full game’s multiplayer plans.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

4. Its roster is deliberately narrower so far

The demo starts with two heroes, and the announced full-game plan calls for five. Ravenswatch lists nine heroes, each contributing to a broader set of team compositions. The numerical difference does not establish which game has deeper builds: Vaultbreakers’ perks, abilities, items and Artifacts may produce substantial variation within a smaller roster, while the final system is not yet fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For now, the choice is between a focused preview of a new cast and a released game with a larger documented selection. Players who decide primarily by character identity should inspect the available demo heroes before assuming the eventual five-character plan will resemble a nine-hero roster.

5. It is an evolving product, not a finished benchmark

Ravenswatch can be evaluated as a released game with a published Switch date. Vaultbreakers must be judged in two layers: the mechanics already playable in the demo and the intentions BetaDwarf has announced for the full release. The distinction protects you from treating planned platforms, modes, roster size or monetization as guarantees.

Choosing between Vaultbreakers and a released co-op roguelike

Choose Vaultbreakers if you want:

  • An extraction loop in which recovering valuables and escaping are central objectives.
  • A choice between cooperative PvE and a higher-risk PvPvE format.
  • A top-down fantasy action RPG that you can try free in its current Steam demo.
  • To experiment with an evolving game and provide feedback while its systems are being developed.
  • A smaller current co-op group of up to three players total.

Choose a released game such as Ravenswatch if you want:

  • A finished, currently available co-op action roguelike rather than a development preview.
  • Hero-specific talents and items with a documented nine-hero roster.
  • Online sessions for up to four players and listed matchmaking.
  • Randomly generated maps and repeated runs without an extraction/PvPvE layer identified in the cited listing.
  • A game with a Nintendo Switch release listed for January 23, 2025.

This is a fit-based recommendation, not a claim that one game is objectively better. Vaultbreakers is the more relevant experiment if the tension of protecting an extracted haul appeals to you. A released hero-driven roguelike is the safer choice when you want a stable ruleset, a larger documented roster and four-player online support now.

Release plans, platforms and pricing

BetaDwarf says it is aiming for a 2027 release and focusing on PC and consoles. The developer currently plans a premium launch, but its own materials say that plan can change. Vaultbreakers is therefore not a paid full release at present; the available demo is free.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not read the target year as a fixed launch date. Development timing, platform availability, cross-play, progression carry-over and pricing can all be revised before release. The most reliable way to track those changes is to check the developer’s official site and its dated announcements, including the October 8, 2026 demo announcement.

Questions to answer before you invest time in the demo

Is Vaultbreakers already a complete game?

No. It is an in-development project with a free demo. The demo shows the current combat, mission structure and early content, while the full roster, final modes and release details remain subject to development changes.

Does Vaultbreakers support four-player co-op?

The current demo supports three players total: you and up to two friends. The announced materials supplied for this comparison do not establish a larger final party size.

Can you play without PvP?

The developer’s test communications describe PvE Adventure/Core modes separately from the higher-risk PvPvE Breaker mode, so the announced design includes a PvE path. Mode rules can still change before launch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens to items when you die in Breaker?

The October 2026 test description says players can lose carried items on death. That is a test-era rule, not a promise that the final version will use exactly the same loss system.

How much of the game is in the demo?

The demo includes two heroes, part of Wolfswood, quests through the first Vaultbreak and co-op for up to two friends. The publisher estimates up to seven hours, although actual playtime depends on how you explore and replay the content.

Bottom line: extraction is the defining difference

Vaultbreakers sets itself apart by making extraction the organizing decision and by placing PvE beside an optional PvPvE risk layer. Its demo already communicates that identity through missions, relic or Artifact recovery and the need to escape, but the broader game remains a work in progress targeted for 2027. If you want a released, hero-centered co-op roguelike with four-player online play, Ravenswatch is the clearer established option. If you want to test whether protecting a hard-won haul is more exciting than simply finishing another run, Vaultbreakers is the more distinctive experiment.
