Vaultbreakers Demo is free on Steam. Open the official Vaultbreakers Demo store page, select the Play/Install Demo action Steam shows, and follow the installation prompt. You need a Windows 10 64-bit PC, broadband internet, and 10 GB of free storage. The demo is a PvE slice with two playable Vaultbreakers, the first Wolfswood map section, co-op for up to two friends, and progress that is mostly temporary.

What the Vaultbreakers demo is

Vaultbreakers Demo is a free public trial listed on Steam. BetaDwarf announced on October 8, 2026 that “The Demo is available to everyone to download from the Steam Store.” The Steam listing gives the demo a release date of October 8, 2026 and identifies it as a limited introduction rather than the complete game.

You can play two Vaultbreakers, improve a haven and its perks, complete onboarding and main quests through the first Vaultbreak, and explore part of the Wolfswood map. The demo supports player-versus-environment content and co-op with up to two friends. It does not provide the game’s PvPvE mode: Steam explicitly says, “The demo only features PvE.” Future PvPvE tests are referenced from the main store page or the calendar inside the demo, not offered as a mode in this build.

That scope makes the demo useful for answering practical questions before a full purchase: whether the controls feel comfortable, whether your computer can launch the game, and whether the early cooperative loop appeals to your group. It is not a promise that the full roster, every map, or all late-game systems are present. Treat the trial as an early, bounded sample of the game.

How to download the demo from Steam

  1. Open the official listing. Go directly to https://store.steampowered.com/app/4488770/. Check that the page title identifies Vaultbreakers Demo before downloading.
  2. Sign in to Steam. The download is delivered through the Steam client, so use the Steam account on the PC where you intend to play.
  3. Choose the demo action. The listing displays a Play/Install Demo action. Select the action currently shown by Steam; the exact wording can change with Steam’s interface.
  4. Accept Steam’s installation prompt. Follow the client prompt to choose an installation library and begin downloading. The official pages do not document every subsequent dialog, so rely on the labels Steam displays rather than a fixed click sequence.
  5. Wait for the download to finish. Keep at least 10 GB available on the destination drive, and allow Steam to complete any final file allocation or update.
  6. Launch from your Library. When installation completes, open the Steam Library and start Vaultbreakers Demo from its entry. If Steam offers a desktop shortcut during setup, that shortcut is optional.

Because the announcement states that the demo is available to everyone through the Steam Store, you do not need a beta key or a special invitation for the public download. Availability and requirements can still change, so the live store page is the authority if its labels differ from this guide.

If you use more than one Steam library, pay attention to the library selected in the install dialog. The 10 GB requirement applies to the drive receiving the files, not merely to any drive elsewhere in the computer. Steam may also need temporary working space while it allocates or updates files, so avoid starting with exactly 10 GB remaining when possible.

Check your PC before installing

Steam publishes separate minimum and recommended specifications. Minimum hardware is the threshold for launching and running the demo under the publisher’s stated configuration; recommended hardware gives you more headroom. Meeting a specification does not guarantee a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset, because Steam does not publish performance benchmarks for this demo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Component Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
Processor 64-bit processor; 4 cores at 3.2 GHz 8 cores at 3.6 GHz
Memory 12 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
Graphics GeForce GTX 960 or Radeon R9 380 GeForce GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 590
DirectX Steam’s primary English listing shows DirectX 12 Steam’s primary English listing shows DirectX 12
Storage 10 GB available space 10 GB available space; SSD recommended
Network Broadband internet Broadband internet

DirectX qualification: another Steam rendering has shown DirectX 11 instead of DirectX 12. This conflict is unresolved in the published material. Check the current English Steam requirements immediately before installation and use the value shown there for your system check; do not assume that one display applies to every regional or client rendering.

The two tiers are best read as a comparison, not as two different editions of the demo. Minimum specifications describe the lower supported configuration; recommended specifications add CPU cores, memory, graphics capability, and an SSD preference. Steam does not state that the recommended tier unlocks extra missions or features. It is about the computer’s ability to handle the same software with more headroom.

How to compare your hardware

  • In Windows, open Settings > System > About to see the processor and installed RAM. Steam’s minimum is 12 GB; its recommended figure is 16 GB.
  • Use Windows Task Manager’s Performance tab or your graphics driver’s information panel to identify the GPU model. Compare the model name with the GTX 960/R9 380 minimum pair or GTX 1660/RX 590 recommended pair.
  • Open This PC in File Explorer and check the free space on the Steam library drive. Reserve 10 GB before starting the installation; leaving additional working room can prevent another download from filling the drive.
  • If your PC has an SSD, install the demo there when practical. Steam marks an SSD as recommended for the recommended configuration, not as a separate minimum requirement.
  • Confirm that Windows is 64-bit. A 32-bit installation does not match the listed operating-system requirement.

Do not treat the recommended specification as an instruction to buy a particular graphics card. Whether an upgrade is necessary depends on the components already in your PC, your available storage, and the experience you want. The published requirements contain no official frame-rate or resolution targets with which to size an upgrade.

A laptop’s dedicated GPU and integrated graphics can have similar-looking names, so compare the exact model shown by Windows rather than assuming that any modern-looking number meets the GTX 960 or GTX 1660 comparison. Likewise, a computer can have enough total RAM while other programs consume much of it. Closing unnecessary applications before launch is sensible, but it does not turn below-minimum hardware into a supported configuration.

What you can play in the demo

Two playable Vaultbreakers

The demo gives access to two Vaultbreakers. It is therefore a focused introduction to the game’s characters and systems rather than a complete roster. The store listing does not establish that every Vaultbreaker, weapon, or late-game system is available.

Haven upgrades and perks

Your haven can be upgraded, and perks are part of the progression available in the trial. These systems let you experience the game’s preparation and improvement loop before reaching the full release.

Wolfswood, onboarding, and early quests

The playable area covers part of the first map, Wolfswood. The route includes onboarding and main quests up to the first Vaultbreak, giving you an opening sequence and an early objective without representing the complete campaign.

Co-op for up to two friends

Steam lists co-op with up to two friends. That wording means you can play with two additional people; it does not establish a larger party size for the demo. Coordinate through Steam’s normal multiplayer interface after launching, and remember that the content itself remains PvE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Each person in the group should install the same public demo from the official listing. A friend who has not installed it cannot be added merely by receiving an invitation. If the party is smaller than three, the stated “up to two friends” limit does not require a full group; it is the maximum additional player count Steam identifies.

No PvPvE in this build

Do not look for a PvPvE toggle in the demo. Steam’s wording is direct: “The demo only features PvE.” The store page and the in-demo calendar may point to future PvPvE tests, but those references are announcements about later testing rather than playable demo content.

What carries over to the full game

Legacy Points are the exception to the demo’s normal reset rules. Steam says they unlock rewards intended to remain available after launch. Progress other than Legacy Points will not carry over to the released game, and the listing warns that demo progress may be reset before full launch.

  • Designed to persist: Legacy Points and the rewards they unlock, according to the Steam description.
  • Not carried over: other demo progress, including ordinary progression through the trial.
  • Possible pre-launch reset: Steam warns that demo progress may be reset before release, so treat the entire trial as changeable until launch.

This distinction matters if you are deciding how much time to invest in upgrades or repeated runs. Play the demo to learn the systems and earn Legacy Points, not to build a permanent character state that Steam promises to preserve.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not interpret “intended to remain available” as a guarantee that every statistic, item, or save file will migrate. The listing specifically identifies Legacy Points and their rewards, while excluding other progress. If Steam or BetaDwarf changes that policy, the current store description and official announcements should take precedence.

First-launch checklist

  1. Let Steam finish the installation and any queued update before pressing Play.
  2. In the game’s Steam properties, confirm that the installation drive has the expected free space and that Steam is not paused.
  3. Use the opening onboarding sequence to learn the controls and objectives before inviting friends.
  4. Choose one of the two available Vaultbreakers and test the haven and perk systems as they become available.
  5. For multiplayer, have each friend install the same demo through the official Steam listing and join through Steam’s in-game invitation flow.
  6. Remember that the available activities are PvE. A missing PvPvE option is normal, not an installation fault.
  7. Note which Legacy Points you earn, but assume ordinary upgrades and quest progress can be reset or discarded before launch.

Keyboard, mouse, and controller support

Steam lists full controller support and specifically mentions Xbox controllers. A PC-compatible Xbox controller is optional: it is an input preference, not a prerequisite for downloading or launching the demo. The listing does not establish a particular controller model, so choose based on the hardware you already own rather than treating the requirement as a shopping specification.

If a controller is not responding, first confirm that Steam recognizes it in the client before launching the game, then reconnect it and restart the demo. For a keyboard-and-mouse setup, no additional hardware is required beyond the PC that meets Steam’s specifications.

Keyboard and mouse versus controller is a comfort choice, not a content choice. Steam’s full-controller-support label does not mean a controller is included with the game or required for co-op. It also does not establish support for every third-party gamepad, so an Xbox-compatible device is the clearest option named by the listing.

Troubleshooting download and installation problems

The demo page does not show an install action

Open the direct listing again at https://store.steampowered.com/app/4488770/ and make sure Steam is signed in. The public announcement says the demo is available to everyone, so a missing action is more likely to be a client, account, or page-state issue than a key requirement. Refresh the page in Steam, restart the client, and check the Library for an existing Vaultbreakers Demo entry before trying again.

Steam reports insufficient disk space

Free at least 10 GB on the drive assigned to the Steam library. If that drive is nearly full, remove or move other files before retrying. Verify the library location in Steam’s storage settings; freeing space on a different drive will not help if the selected library remains full.

Your PC is below the listed memory or GPU requirement

The minimum is 12 GB of RAM and a GTX 960 or R9 380-class GPU; the recommended figures are 16 GB and a GTX 1660 or RX 590. Steam provides no official fallback mode or performance guarantee for hardware below those values. You can compare your components again, close other applications to reduce memory pressure, or use a PC that meets the published minimum rather than assuming the demo will run acceptably.

The operating-system requirement is unclear

The listing specifies Windows 10 64-bit. Confirm your edition and system type in Settings > System > About. If the live Steam page presents a changed requirement, follow that current listing; requirements can be revised after publication.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam shows a DirectX mismatch

Steam has displayed DirectX 12 in its primary English result and DirectX 11 in another rendering. Because those values conflict, inspect the live English requirements before troubleshooting a launch error. Update Windows and your graphics driver through the normal vendor-supported channels, then compare the resulting system information with the current listing instead of relying on an older screenshot or cached page.

The game launches but expected modes are missing

The demo is intentionally limited. It includes PvE only, part of Wolfswood, early quests through the first Vaultbreak, two playable Vaultbreakers, haven and perk upgrades, and co-op with up to two friends. PvPvE is not a missing download component in this build.

Progress disappeared

Steam warns that demo progress may be reset before full launch, and only Legacy Points are described as carrying forward. A reset of ordinary demo progress is therefore within the stated behavior. Keep playing for the experience and Legacy Points rather than treating non-Legacy progress as permanent.

Co-op is not working

Confirm that everyone is signed in to Steam, has installed the same demo, and is using the current build after queued updates finish. The listing supports co-op with up to two friends, so a group larger than that is outside the stated demo limit. If the PvE content loads but a PvPvE option is absent, that is expected rather than a network failure.

Release timing and official updates

Steam lists the demo’s release date as October 8, 2026. BetaDwarf’s official site currently aims to release the full game in 2027; that is a developer plan, not a guaranteed launch date. For changes to requirements, demo content, or timing, check the live Steam page and the official announcements.

The developer says wishlisting the game on Steam is the best way to support it. The official site also describes a content creator program with a request route. The published information does not specify eligibility, benefits, commissions, or whether requests are open at any given moment, so creators should review the current details at vaultbreakers.com/en rather than assuming access.

Quick decision: should you install it?

  • Install now if you have Windows 10 64-bit, at least 12 GB RAM, a listed minimum-class GPU, broadband internet, and 10 GB free, and you want to sample the PvE loop or play early co-op.
  • Prefer the recommended setup if your PC has 16 GB RAM, an 8-core 3.6 GHz processor, a GTX 1660 or RX 590-class GPU, and an SSD. Those are Steam’s recommended specifications, not a published frame-rate promise.
  • Wait or verify first if your hardware is below minimum, your storage is tight, or the DirectX value on your Steam client differs. The live listing should settle current requirements before you commit the download.

The free demo is a contained way to learn Vaultbreakers’ early systems, explore Wolfswood, and play PvE co-op. Install it from the official Steam page, judge compatibility against the current requirements, and remember that Legacy Points—not ordinary demo progression—are the part Steam currently describes as surviving into the full release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Vaultbreakers Steam demo free?

Yes. Steam lists Vaultbreakers Demo as free, and BetaDwarf announced on October 8, 2026 that everyone can download it from the Steam Store. Use the official listing rather than a third-party download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much storage does the demo need?

Steam lists 10 GB of available storage for both minimum and recommended configurations. Keep that space on the drive selected for your Steam library, with additional room if possible for file allocation or updates.

Can I play PvPvE in the demo?

No. The Steam listing says, “The demo only features PvE.” The store page or the in-demo calendar may mention future PvPvE tests, but PvPvE is not a mode in this demo build.

How many people can play together?

The demo supports co-op with up to two friends, meaning a maximum of two additional players according to Steam’s wording. Each friend needs the same demo installed through Steam.

What progress carries into the full game?

Legacy Points and the rewards they unlock are described as intended to remain available after launch. Other progress will not carry over, and Steam warns that demo progress may be reset before the full release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the demo require a controller?

No. Steam lists full controller support and Xbox controllers, but a controller is optional. You can use keyboard and mouse, or connect a PC-compatible Xbox controller if that is your preference.

What DirectX version is required?

One primary English Steam rendering shows DirectX 12, while another rendering has shown DirectX 11. Because the displays conflict, check the live English requirements on Steam before installing or diagnosing a launch problem.

When is the full game coming out?

BetaDwarf’s official website currently aims for a 2027 release. That is a plan rather than a guaranteed date, so follow the Steam listing and official announcements for changes.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Install the free Vaultbreakers Demo from its official Steam page if your Windows 10 64-bit PC meets the listed requirements: 12 GB RAM and GTX 960/R9 380-class graphics at minimum, plus 10 GB of storage and broadband internet. Expect a PvE introduction with two Vaultbreakers, Wolfswood’s opening content, and co-op for up to two friends. Legacy Points are intended to persist; ordinary demo progress may not.
