If the Vaultbreakers demo won’t start, first check that your PC meets the Steam requirements and can use DirectX 12. BetaDwarf’s October 8, 2026 patch notes identify two launch-related issues: some starts can hang on an infinite loading screen, for which retries may work, and Exclusive Full Screen can cause crashes, for which the developer recommends Windowed Full Screen. If those checks do not help, use Steam’s general Windows troubleshooting steps and record exactly where startup fails before seeking support.
Start with the failure you can observe
“Won’t launch” can describe several different problems: Steam may remain on “Preparing to Launch,” the Play button may briefly change to Running and then return, a game window may appear and close, or the game may open but never get past loading. Those symptoms do not establish the same cause. The official sources do not identify one universal cause for an unspecified Vaultbreakers launch failure, so note what happens before changing settings.
- Click Play once and watch Steam’s status. Does it show Running, and for how long?
- Does a game window appear? If so, does it close, remain black, or stop at a loading screen?
- Does Steam or Windows display an error message? Record the exact wording.
- Note whether this is the first launch or whether the game has started successfully on this PC before.

The Vaultbreakers Demo Steam listing, accessed October 13, 2026, specifies the following Windows requirements. Meeting the minimum is a compatibility check, not a guarantee that every launch will succeed.

There is a DirectX discrepancy: indexed versions of the Steam listing show either DirectX 11 or DirectX 12. For launch troubleshooting, give precedence to BetaDwarf’s dated developer statement. In its October 2026 Demo and Alpha Test patch notes, published October 8, 2026, the developer says: “DX 11 is no longer supported as it was causing instability and crashes.” Make sure DirectX 12 is available and in use, then recheck the live Steam listing in case its requirements have been updated.
Compare your CPU, RAM, graphics card and free storage with the table before treating the failure as a game defect. Steam lists an SSD as recommended, but neither Steam nor BetaDwarf says that installing one fixes a launch problem. The requirements likewise do not show that upgrading any one component will resolve an unknown failure.
The minimum and recommended entries are not interchangeable. The listing’s minimum is 12 GB RAM and GTX 960/Radeon R9 380-class graphics; its recommendation rises to 16 GB RAM and GTX 1660/Radeon RX 590-class graphics. The processor recommendation is not stated, so there is no supported recommended CPU comparison to make. Likewise, the listing specifies 10 GB free storage and recommends an SSD, but it does not claim that an SSD is required or that it cures a crash. Use these figures to identify a possible compatibility gap, not as a diagnosis or a shopping list.

Try the two game-specific fixes first
If startup stays on an infinite loading screen
BetaDwarf says that some launches can reach an infinite load screen and that retries resolve it. If the game window is still stuck at loading, close the unresponsive session if you can and try starting the game again from Steam. The patch note does not give a specific retry count or say that every loading hang is this known issue; if repeated attempts leave the same symptom, move on to the compatibility and general Steam checks rather than assuming retries will always work.
If the game crashes or closes after startup
The same October 8 patch notes associate crash issues with Exclusive Full Screen and recommend Windowed Full Screen. If you can reach the game’s display settings, change the display mode to Windowed Full Screen and then try another launch. This advice applies when the setting is accessible; if the game closes before you can open settings, the patch notes do not provide an alternate settings-file edit or launch command, so do not guess at one.
BetaDwarf’s note is specific to Exclusive Full Screen. It does not establish that every crash after clicking Play has this cause, nor does it identify a particular graphics card or driver as responsible.
Run Steam’s general Windows launch checks
If the game-specific steps do not fit your symptom or do not help, Steam’s Windows guidance for games that do not run after “Preparing to Launch” recommends updating Windows, updating computer drivers, verifying game files, closing non-essential software and checking system requirements. These are broad Steam troubleshooting measures, not guaranteed Vaultbreakers-specific fixes.

- Update drivers. Check for current drivers for your computer, particularly its graphics hardware, using the appropriate manufacturer or PC-maker update route. Steam recommends driver updates generally; BetaDwarf has not named a specific driver version as a Vaultbreakers fix.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In your Steam Library, open the game’s Properties and use the installed-files option to verify integrity. Let Steam complete the check, then retry. Steam recommends verification for launch problems; the available guidance does not promise that missing or damaged files are the cause in this case.
- Close non-essential software. Exit applications you do not need while testing, then launch the demo again. Steam gives this as general advice, not as evidence that a particular overlay, antivirus product or other named application is blocking Vaultbreakers.
- Recheck requirements. Compare the PC against the Steam listing and the DirectX 12 guidance above. If a requirement is not met, record that fact rather than assuming a single purchase or upgrade will solve the launch failure.
Change one thing at a time where practical and observe whether the symptom changes. That makes it easier to tell whether a step helped; changing several unrelated settings at once makes the result harder to diagnose.
A practical order is to first capture the symptom, then check the requirements and DirectX guidance, try a fresh launch if it is stuck loading, and switch away from Exclusive Full Screen if you can reach that setting. After that, work through Steam’s general Windows checks. This order prioritizes the developer’s specific notes before broader troubleshooting and avoids starting with disruptive or unsupported fixes.
What not to infer from older playtest reports
BetaDwarf’s July 22, 2026 playtest patch notes reported crashes, forced exits, connection reliability problems and performance degradation on PCs at minimum specifications. Those notes concern a prior playtest, not a measured failure rate or a confirmed list of current demo launch defects. They do not establish that today’s demo is affected in the same way, or that any one of those issues explains a particular player’s failure.
The official sources cited here do not publish a current percentage of demo launches that fail. They also do not tie a specific antivirus tool, VPN, overlay, driver release or error code to current Vaultbreakers demo launch failures. Steam’s suggestion to close non-essential software remains a general diagnostic step, not a finding about any named program.

Collect useful details if it still will not start
If the steps above do not resolve the problem, gather details before reporting it through the game’s official support or community route. A concise report should make the failure reproducible and separate facts from guesses.
- Failure point: say whether Steam stays on Preparing to Launch, changes to Running and exits, opens a window, hangs during loading, or shows another behavior.
- Error evidence: include the exact Steam or Windows message, or state that no message appears. If you have a crash log, include its relevant details through the official reporting route.
- System details: provide Windows version and whether it is 64-bit, CPU model, graphics card, installed RAM and free storage.
- Relevant checks: state whether DirectX 12 is available and in use, whether the PC meets the listed requirements, and which troubleshooting steps you tried.
- Context: mention whether the game has launched before on this PC and whether you changed the display mode or another setting recently.
This information supports a more precise diagnosis than “it won’t launch.” Avoid jumping to registry edits, unverified launch options, repeated reinstalls or hardware purchases: the official guidance cited here does not connect those actions to the symptoms described.

Why does Vaultbreakers close after I click Play?
That symptom alone does not identify a cause. Indexed versions of the listing conflict, with one showing DirectX 11 and another DirectX 12. BetaDwarf’s October 8, 2026 patch notes explicitly say DX11 is no longer supported because it caused instability and crashes. How many times should I retry an infinite loading screen?
BetaDwarf says retries resolve the infinite loading screen that can happen on some launches, but the notes do not specify a retry count or promise that every loading hang will clear.
