To fix a “Specify a Vary: Accept-Encoding Header” warning, first check the public response for the affected URL. If its representation changes according to a request’s Accept-Encoding field, the cacheable response should identify that choice with Vary: Accept-Encoding. Then update the layer that actually serves or transforms the response—such as Apache, NGINX, a proxy, or a CDN—and verify the result through the same path visitors use. The warning alone does not tell you which layer needs a change, or prove the header is missing from every response.

What the warning means

Accept-Encoding is a request field a client uses to indicate which content codings it can accept. A server can use it to choose between compressed and uncompressed versions of a resource. Vary is a response field that tells caches which request fields influenced that choice. With Vary: Accept-Encoding, a cache treats requests with different encoding preferences as distinct variants rather than reusing one response indiscriminately.

RFC 9110 says: “An origin server SHOULD generate a Vary header field on a cacheable response when it wishes that response to be selectively reused for subsequent requests.” The standard describes the intended cache behavior; it does not mean every response must include this field regardless of how the response is selected. See RFC 9110, HTTP Semantics.

The warning is a reason to inspect the response and identify which component produced it. Compression may be configured at the origin, a reverse proxy, or a CDN, and a server module may already add the field.

Find the component that serves the response

Start with the exact URL flagged by the audit and check its response through the same hostname and CDN or proxy route visitors use. Determine whether the response is generated by your application, Apache, NGINX, or an intermediary. If a CDN or managed platform controls the public response, an origin-only change may not alter what the audit sees.

  • Response owner: Identify the application, web server, proxy, CDN, or managed host that can set or modify the public response field.
  • Compression method: Check whether the response uses dynamic gzip or Brotli compression, or is served from precompressed static files.
  • Existing fields: Inspect the current Vary value; other fields may already affect response selection and need to be preserved.
  • Cache path: Establish whether the audit observes the origin directly or the final CDN/proxy response.
  • Configuration access: Confirm whether you can edit server configuration or must use provider controls.

gzip_proxied any;
gzip_vary on;

gzip_proxied any; enables gzip compression for requests forwarded by a proxy in this configuration, while gzip_vary on; adds Vary: Accept-Encoding. The field allows Cloud CDN to keep compressed and uncompressed variants separate; multiple cache fills for a resource are expected. This example is specific to the documented proxy setup, so confirm your own topology and existing directives before applying it elsewhere.

After changing the configuration, restart NGINX using the service-management method appropriate to your host so it loads the change. Google lists /etc/nginx/nginx.conf as a common location, but installations can differ. If NGINX is not the layer producing the public response, changing its configuration may not resolve the audit result.

Fix it in Apache HTTP Server

Check the compression modules first

Apache’s mod_deflate sends Vary: Accept-Encoding to alert proxies to serve a cached compressed response only to clients whose request supports that encoding. Apache’s mod_brotli documents the same behavior for Brotli-compressed responses. If either module handles the affected response, inspect its public headers before adding a manual rule: the field may already be present. Documentation: mod_deflate and mod_brotli.

Use mod_headers only when a change is needed

Apache’s mod_headers can modify response fields in server, virtual-host, directory, and .htaccess contexts. The right context and any conditions depend on the site’s configuration. Before setting a header manually, check whether another module or configuration layer already sets Vary; replacing the whole value can discard other fields needed for correct caching.

Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.

Apache documents Header operations including append, merge, and set. It warns that add can create multiple fields with the same name and generally recommends using set, append, or merge instead. Choose an operation that preserves the response’s existing variation requirements. See the mod_headers documentation.

If compression or response selection also depends on another request field—for example, an exclusion based on User-Agent—Apache’s compression guidance says that field should also be included in Vary. Where selection depends on information outside request headers, Apache discusses Vary: *; that special case prevents compliant caches from reusing the response and is not a general replacement for identifying the actual selection behavior.

When a CDN, proxy, or managed host controls the response

Check the provider’s compression and cache settings as well as the origin configuration, then test the final response through the provider’s serving path. Google’s Cloud CDN guidance illustrates why the layers must agree: the origin’s compression behavior and CDN cache variants need to work together. If the flagged resource comes entirely from another origin, you cannot change the headers that origin sends; responsibility lies with the host producing that response. See Kinsta’s troubleshooting guide for this third-party-resource limitation.

Verify the response after the change

  1. Request the flagged URL through the public route. Use the same hostname and CDN or proxy path checked by the audit, rather than relying only on an origin-side configuration.
  2. Compare encoding preferences. Check responses to requests with different Accept-Encoding values, including a client that accepts compression and one that does not.
  3. Check the response fields. Confirm that Content-Encoding is appropriate for each request and that a cacheable response selected based on Accept-Encoding includes Vary: Accept-Encoding.
  4. Recheck the audit’s exact URL. If the field is already present, investigate whether the warning concerns another URL, another response layer, or a third-party resource.

RFC 9110 defines how request content-coding preferences and Vary affect selection and cache reuse. Google’s Cloud CDN guide describes keeping compressed and uncompressed variants separate in its documented setup.

Account for the cache trade-off

A Vary field can create multiple cache variants for one URL. Apache’s caching guide explains that caches retain negotiated representations side by side and cautions that high-cardinality fields can produce many duplicate entries. List the request fields that actually affect representation selection; adding unnecessary variation can fragment the cache without improving correctness.
