Variable data printing (VDP) is a digital printing method that uses data records to change selected content from one printed piece to the next. A shared design can stay the same while details such as names, images, graphics, or codes are tailored to each record.
How variable data printing works
A VDP job connects a design to structured data and rules that determine which record-specific content goes where. A typical workflow includes:
- A template: The shared layout and the places where content can change.
- A data file or database: Records such as one row per recipient, with fields for names, addresses, or other content.
- Field mappings and rules: Instructions that connect data fields to parts of the design and select the appropriate content.
- VDP software and a digital print device: The software prepares individualized pieces for a compatible production system.
The exact setup depends on the products and workflow. For example, Esko WebCenter documentation describes uploading an artwork template and CSV file, then linking the file to the template. Roland DG describes a template file and data file, with image files available as an option. These are examples of particular workflows, not universal setup requirements.

The variable content may be as simple as a recipient’s name or address, or it may include several types of information. Depending on the job and system, fields can include:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

- Images or graphics
- Barcodes and other codes
- Charts or other record-specific objects
Fiery Help and Documentation describes a personalized address block as a simple form of VDP: “A mail merge with a personalized address block is a simple form of VDP.” More complex jobs can vary multiple elements according to data and selection rules.
Where VDP is used
VDP is useful when a print run shares a layout but needs different information on individual pieces. Documented examples include personalized letters and brochures, direct-mail advertising, postcards, newsletters, employee ID cards, and sequentially numbered tickets. The appropriate level of personalization depends on the job’s data, design, and production workflow.

VDP formats and compatibility
VDP is associated with digital printing because the content must change between impressions. Format support is not universal: it depends on the authoring software, data structure, print controller, and press. For example, Canon PRISMAsync documentation names PPML and PDF/VT support for its VDP workflow; that is a product-specific example, not a compatibility guarantee for other systems.

VDP compared with ordinary mail merge
A mail merge that inserts a personalized address into an otherwise identical document is a basic example of VDP. The broader term also covers jobs in which images, graphics, codes, or other content vary by record. In both cases, the defining idea is that data controls selected content while other design elements can remain fixed.
