Smartphone cameras are adding physical variable apertures again because an adjustable opening gives them direct control over incoming light and depth of field. That can help in scenes where a photographer wants more of the image in focus, but it is not an automatic image-quality upgrade: phone cameras often already have broad depth of field, and a fixed wide aperture can be better in low light.

What does variable aperture actually do on a phone?

Aperture is the opening in a camera lens that lets light reach the sensor. A lower f-number means a wider opening; a higher f-number means a narrower one. Widening the opening admits more light and tends to make depth of field shallower, so the area that appears acceptably sharp in front of and behind the focus point shrinks. Narrowing it reduces light but can keep more of a scene at different distances in focus.

This is a physical optical change when a phone has a moving iris. It affects the light path before the image reaches the sensor. The practical result depends on the sensor, lens and focal length, subject distance, and the phone’s image processing—not just the f-number printed in a specification.

Why did most phones use a fixed aperture?

Phone cameras typically have small sensors and short focal lengths. Those characteristics often produce considerable depth of field even with the lens wide open, so much of an everyday scene can look sharp without stopping down. A fixed wide aperture also preserves light, which can help the camera use a faster shutter speed or lower ISO sensitivity, especially in dim conditions.

For many routine photos, that is a useful compromise: the camera gets as much light as its fixed lens allows, while the scene remains acceptably in focus. An adjustable aperture is more useful when a photographer specifically wants greater depth of field or more direct control over exposure. Its value varies with the scene and camera design; it does not make every photo better.

Why are adjustable apertures showing up again?

Variable aperture is an older optical idea being used selectively in newer phones, rather than a feature that has replaced fixed apertures across the market. The examples below illustrate different generations; they are not a complete list, and specifications or availability can vary by region.

Physical aperture versus software blur

A phone can also offer an aperture-like effect in software. Samsung describes Expert RAW Virtual Aperture on the Galaxy S25 series as a way to choose deeper or shallower depth-of-field effects. Samsung developer Pyojae Kim said the feature uses “an interface that recreates the effect of changing the aperture of a lens on a DSLR camera, allowing users to flexibly select deep or shallow depths of field,” in a 2025 Samsung Global Newsroom interview.

MIAO LAB 28X HD Telephoto Lens for iPhone/Samsung/Android, High Power Telephoto Camera Lens with Universal Clip Compatibility Most Smartphone - 28X
  • Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
  • Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
  • Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
  • Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
  • Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.

That is a computational effect, not a moving physical diaphragm. Samsung reported using 200,000 photos to build the feature’s training database; that is a development figure, not a measure of image quality or a user outcome. Software blur can offer convenient control over the rendered look, while a physical iris changes how much light enters the camera and the optical depth of field. Without controlled comparisons, neither approach can be said to look better in every situation.

Does variable aperture make phone photos better?

It can help when the scene benefits from a different balance of light and depth of field. A narrower aperture may keep more distances acceptably sharp, while a wide opening can help gather light. But the narrow setting also reduces the light reaching the sensor, so the camera may need a slower shutter or higher ISO. In low light, those changes can work against sharpness or image cleanliness.

Aperture range alone is not a camera-quality score. Sensor size, lens design, autofocus and focus consistency, shutter behavior, image processing, and the photographer’s controls all matter. No controlled head-to-head results are established here for the named phones, so their aperture specifications should not be used to rank their photos.

What to check when choosing a phone camera

  • Identify the mechanism. Check whether the phone changes aperture with a physical iris or creates an aperture-like effect in software.
  • Read the range in context. A minimum and maximum f-number tell only part of the story; look for whether settings are stepped or continuous and how the lens and sensor shape the result.
  • Check where adjustment applies. Confirm whether aperture control is automatic or manual and whether it is available for still photos, video, or both.
  • Look for evidence beyond specifications. Independent samples or controlled tests can show how a camera handles low light, shutter speeds, focus, and processing in practice.
  • Confirm the local model. Regional availability and specifications may differ, so verify the exact version sold where you live.
