VOO’s per-share distributions have risen in recent years, but the available Vanguard figures do not establish either a 71% increase since 2016 or a yield that has nearly halved. Those claims depend on matching payout periods and using the same yield definition at both endpoints. A rising cash payout and a falling yield can coexist because yield also depends on the fund’s share price.
What VOO pays—and what the figures show
Vanguard describes the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (VOO) as an exchange-traded share class of Vanguard 500 Index Fund. It distributes quarterly. Vanguard’s fund profile displays these recent per-share distributions:

These recent entries do not by themselves establish the change in annual distributions per share from 2016 to the latest complete year. To test a 71% claim, add the four payments for a consistently defined period at each endpoint—such as calendar-year distributions—and calculate the percentage change from the 2016 total. Do not compare a partial current year with a complete year.
Vanguard’s 2025 dividend schedule lists quarterly dates for VOO. Its fund profile and distribution table provides the recent amounts above.

Why a larger payout can come with a lower yield
Distribution per share is the cash amount paid for each share over a stated period. Yield expresses distributions relative to a share price or under a standardized calculation. For a simple trailing distribution yield, the calculation is generally the distributions over the preceding 12 months divided by the share price on a chosen date.
If distributions rise but the share price rises faster, the yield can fall. For example, an annual distribution that grows by 10% while the share price grows by 20% produces a lower distribution-to-price ratio, all else equal. That relationship does not establish what happened to VOO’s yield since 2016; the comparison still requires matching dates and a consistent yield measure.

What Vanguard’s dated yield figure means
Vanguard’s ETF listing reports a 0.98% 30-day SEC yield as of August 31, 2026. The 30-day SEC yield is a standardized measure, not the same thing as a trailing-twelve-month distribution yield. It is a dated snapshot, so it cannot alone confirm that yield has nearly halved since 2016.

How to check the two headline claims
- Define the payout period. Use calendar-year distributions per share or trailing-12-month distributions per share, and use the same approach for both endpoints.
- Choose the yield measure. State whether the comparison is trailing distribution yield, 30-day SEC yield, or another named measure.
- Match the dates. Compare equivalent dates or periods and use the latest complete payout period rather than a partial year.
- Calculate the change. For payouts, use (latest period total − 2016 period total) ÷ 2016 period total. For yields, calculate both endpoint yields using the chosen definition before comparing them.
- Keep the conclusion within the evidence. Vanguard’s available figures here show recent distributions and one dated SEC yield, not the full comparable historical series needed to verify either headline percentage.
