VanEck has asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to withdraw the registration for its proposed Lido Staked Ethereum ETF, according to reports published October 14, 2026. The filing apparently never became effective, and no ETF shares or other securities were issued or sold. The available reports do not give a reason for the request, so the withdrawal should not be described as an SEC rejection or as evidence that the fund launched and later closed.
What happened
VanEck filed Form S-1 registration statement 333-290918 for the proposed VanEck Lido Staked Ethereum ETF on October 16, 2025. TokenPost and ETF.net reported on October 14, 2026 that VanEck sought SEC consent to withdraw the registration.
Both reports described the action as a withdrawal request made before the S-1 became effective. They also stated that the trust had not issued or sold securities. The public information available in those reports does not establish whether the SEC has entered a final withdrawal order, and it does not identify a reason supplied by VanEck.
Chronology of the proposed fund
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| October 2, 2025 | The trust agreement was executed by VanEck Digital Assets, LLC, as sponsor, and CSC Delaware Trust Company, as trustee. |
| October 16, 2025 | VanEck filed S-1 registration statement 333-290918 for the proposed ETF. |
| October 20, 2025 | Lido publicly announced the filing and described the planned product as providing exposure to stETH. |
| October 14, 2026 | TokenPost and ETF.net reported that VanEck sought to withdraw the registration before effectiveness. |
What the ETF was designed to hold and track
The prospectus stated that the trust’s objective was “to reflect the performance of the price of stETH less the expenses of the Trust’s operations.” The proposed fund was therefore intended to provide exchange-traded exposure to Lido’s stETH rather than to hold ordinary Ether alone.

Underlying asset: stETH
stETH is a liquid-staking token that represents deposited Ether and associated staking rewards. Instead of requiring an investor to operate a validator or lock Ether directly, a holder of stETH receives a token designed to represent a claim on staked Ether and the rewards generated by the staking system, subject to the token’s own market, smart-contract and redemption risks.
Valuation and investment method
The trust would have used the MarketVector Lido Staked Ethereum Benchmark Rate for daily valuation. The filing described a passive structure with no leverage and no derivatives. VanEck Digital Assets, LLC would have served as sponsor, while CSC Delaware Trust Company would have served as trustee.
The filing reported that VanEck had approximately $128.64 billion in assets under management as of June 30, 2025. That figure describes the sponsor’s reported assets under management at that date; it is not the size of this proposed trust and does not indicate that the ETF raised money.

Was the ETF approved or launched?
No. The reports available for October 14, 2026 say the registration had not become effective and that no securities had been issued or sold. A filed S-1 is a proposal and disclosure document, not proof that a fund has received final approval, begun trading or accepted investor assets.
Accordingly, there is no established launch date, trading history, assets-under-management figure for the ETF, or evidence that investors purchased its shares. The reported withdrawal request also should not be characterized as a post-launch closure.
Did the SEC reject the application?
The available reporting does not show an SEC rejection. It shows that VanEck sought to withdraw its registration before effectiveness. Withdrawal and rejection are different outcomes: a sponsor can ask to stop pursuing a registration, while a rejection would imply an adverse regulatory decision. Neither report reviewed here states that the SEC rejected the proposal.

Why did VanEck withdraw it?
No reason has been reported in the cited October 14, 2026 coverage. Possible explanations could include commercial, regulatory, operational or market considerations, but assigning any of those motives to VanEck would go beyond the established record. Until VanEck or the SEC provides a reason, the accurate answer is simply that the sponsor requested withdrawal and the rationale is undisclosed.

The withdrawal removes this particular proposed exchange-traded route to stETH exposure; it does not itself terminate the Lido protocol or make existing stETH cease to exist. Investors who already hold stETH are dealing with the token’s own market and protocol arrangements, not with shares of the proposed VanEck trust.
Anyone evaluating stETH against direct Ether or another Ethereum investment product should separate several issues:

- Exposure: direct ETH ownership and stETH ownership are different claims with different market and protocol risks.
- Rewards: stETH is designed to represent deposited Ether plus staking rewards, whereas a conventional spot-ETH product may not pass staking rewards through to shareholders.
- Custody and access: a fund share would have placed custody, creation and redemption in an ETF structure; holding stETH directly requires a wallet or another custody arrangement and interaction with the token’s market.
- Valuation: the proposed trust would have used a stated benchmark rate for daily valuation, while direct holders transact at the market price available to them.
- Status and liquidity: the VanEck vehicle never reached an established trading market, so there are no fund-level liquidity, fee or tracking results to assess.
Lido’s description of the market context
When Lido announced the filing on October 20, 2025, Kean Gilbert, head of institutional relations at the Lido Ecosystem Foundation, said the filing reflected growing recognition of liquid staking as part of Ethereum’s infrastructure. Lido also said users had earned more than $2 billion in staking rewards and that the protocol had nearly $40 billion in total value locked. Those figures were Lido’s own 2025 claims and should be treated as company-reported figures rather than independently audited statistics.
What to watch next
The key unanswered question is whether the SEC formally records the withdrawal and whether VanEck gives a public explanation. Until then, the confirmed facts are limited: the S-1 was filed in October 2025, the proposed trust would have held stETH and tracked its price less expenses, and October 2026 reports say the sponsor sought withdrawal before effectiveness with no securities issued or sold.
