Indian Railways’ 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper concept predates the first train’s January 2026 launch: the 2023–24 railway plan envisaged 50 sleeper rakes in a 24-car configuration. A Times of India report published on 12 October 2026 says a 24-coach variant will include a pantry car, but the official sources available do not confirm that specific fitment, its approval, or when it might enter service.
What is the 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper?
It is a proposed longer configuration of Indian Railways’ sleeper trainset. The 2024–25 Indian Railways Year Book, reporting plans from 2023–24, listed 50 Vande Bharat Sleeper rakes in a 24-car configuration envisaged for manufacture at Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai. The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express was flagged off from Malda Town on 17 January 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau. That completed flag-off is separate from the earlier 24-car plan and from later manufacturing plans; it does not establish that a 24-coach rake is already in passenger service.
Will the 24-coach version have a pantry car?
The Times of India report dated 12 October 2026 describes the 24-coach variant as having a pantry car. The official railway planning and programme sources cited here do not independently confirm that pantry-car detail for this specific configuration. Treat it as a reported feature, not as an officially verified specification. The available material also does not establish formal approval, procurement scope, or a production schedule for the pantry-equipped variant.

How does the 24-coach plan fit into the wider programme?
The figures refer to different plans at different points in time, so they should not be added together or read as a single confirmed order. In a parliamentary response on 4 February 2026, the Ministry of Railways said 260 Vande Bharat Sleeper rakes were planned for manufacture. It described phased prototype development, trials, and series production involving BEML, ICF Chennai, and technology partners. What features has the Ministry listed?
The Ministry’s February 2026 response lists trainset features including KAVACH, a crashworthy car-body design, fire-barrier doors, aerosol-based fire detection and suppression in electrical cabinets and lavatories, regenerative braking, automatic plug doors, sealed wider gangways, CCTV, passenger emergency talk-back, accessibility provisions, centralized coach monitoring, and upper-berth ladders designed for ergonomics. These are stated specifications; the list is not, by itself, independent evidence of performance in service.

The Ministry gives a design speed of 180 km/h and an operating speed of 160 km/h. Those trainset figures do not mean the train will run at either speed on every route; actual service speed depends on operating conditions and route infrastructure. The same response claims the specified UV-C air-disinfection system deactivates 99% of harmful bacteria. That is the Ministry’s product-feature claim, not an independently assessed health outcome. Is it better than Rajdhani Express?
The October 2026 report frames the Vande Bharat Sleeper’s features as better than Rajdhani Express, but the available sources provide no independent comparative metric establishing that it is better overall. A meaningful comparison would need to specify what is being measured—such as journey time, fares, comfort, capacity, or safety—and compare equivalent services on the same route. The listed Vande Bharat features alone do not establish a blanket advantage.

No route or passenger-service start date for the particular 24-coach, pantry-equipped variant is established by the sources cited here. The Ministry says sleeper production and service induction are phased, with regular service dependent on demand and operational readiness. A general manufacturing plan should not be mistaken for a scheduled launch of this specific configuration.
