Vampire Crawlers is a turn-based deckbuilder roguelite in which the order of your mana costs matters as much as the cards themselves. Start by arranging plays into ascending-cost chains, use a 3-cost card as a finisher, and spend early village gold on Recovery before chasing damage upgrades. Imelda is the easiest character for learning the system; Gennaro is a strong alternative if you prefer cheap projectile cards.
This guide explains the TurboTurn combat loop, card colors, chain timing, beginner upgrade economy, character choices, and a practical route from Mad Forest to Arcana, the Grim Grimoire, and the Blacksmith. Unlock thresholds can change with patches, so check the current in-game descriptions if your build differs.
What Vampire Crawlers is and what to learn first
Vampire Crawlers launched on April 21, 2026. Each attempt combines turn-based battles, deckbuilding, permanent village improvements, and roguelite progression. A run-specific weapon or card helps only that crawl; gold-funded village upgrades remain available on future attempts. Separating those two progression layers prevents a common beginner mistake: spending all of your money on immediate combat power while leaving the persistent economy weak.

The central lesson is sequencing. Cards have mana costs, and the combat system rewards playing them in an intentional order rather than firing the strongest card whenever it becomes available. A modest card that completes a chain can deal more total damage than an expensive card played alone. Your leader’s color effect, the cards you draft, and the characters equipped at the Inn then determine which chains are worth pursuing.

How combat works: mana order, TurboTurn, and Combo Stack
Play costs in ascending order
The practical opening pattern is 0-cost, then 1-cost, then 2-cost, and so on. The game’s FAQ describes Combo Stack as rewarding that ascending sequence with a damage multiplier. TurboTurn is the broader sequencing loop: you manage mana, preserve chain timing, and decide whether the next card advances the pattern or ends it.
Do not interpret the rule as “always play every card in numerical order.” A chain is valuable only when its payoff is meaningful. Breaking a nearly complete sequence to use a weak side card usually loses more damage than it gains. Conversely, if an enemy is about to defeat you, taking an immediate defensive action is better than protecting an abstract chain.
A reliable turn routine
- Scan available costs. Identify the lowest playable card and note whether a 0-cost opener is available.
- Look for the next link. Check whether you can continue with 1, 2, and higher costs without consuming the card needed for a stronger effect later.
- Reserve the finisher. Treat a 3-cost card as a finisher when it has a substantial attack, a decisive defense, or a color-triggered effect.
- Use Wild cards to repair gaps. A Wild card can patch a missing cost when doing so preserves a valuable chain. Do not spend it merely to make a weak sequence look complete.
- Stop when the payoff falls off. If the next card adds little damage and would consume your only defensive option, end the chain and prepare for the enemy’s response.
This routine creates a decision hierarchy: survival first, a meaningful ascending chain second, and minor side effects last. The strongest card in your hand is not automatically the correct first play.

The 2026 FAQ reports more than 80 unique cards across six types. Its snapshot lists the following category figures; because the headline total and category counts use different counting conventions, treat them as a description of the reported pool rather than a calculation that must add to one exact total.
| Type | Color | Reported count | Typical role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attack | Red | 37 | Direct damage and offensive chain links |
| Defense | Blue | 7 | Blocking, mitigation, or survival turns |
| Stat Boost | Yellow | 18 | Scaling a character or later attacks |
| Mana | Purple | 6 | Improving the resources needed to continue a turn |
| Character | Teal | 22 | Leader and character-based effects |
| Wild and Temporary | Varies | Included separately | Flexible costs or cards that do not remain in the deck permanently |
Color is not cosmetic. Your leader supplies a color trigger, so a card that is slightly weaker in isolation may be the correct pick if it activates that trigger and extends your deck’s main plan. Drafting every card that looks powerful produces a large, inconsistent deck and makes ascending chains harder to assemble.
Characters at the Inn
You can equip up to five characters at the Inn. Think of the Inn as a way to broaden your available effects while keeping a clear leader identity. The leader’s passive should define the deck’s preferred colors; additional characters should support that plan rather than pull you toward unrelated card types.
Your first run: a step-by-step plan
1. Pick a leader that matches how you want to learn
Imelda is the most forgiving starting route. Her experience-focused passive helps you see more cards and upgrades quickly, giving a new player more opportunities to understand the draft system. Her natural plan emphasizes experience scaling and yellow-card follow-ups.

Gennaro suits players who prefer cheap projectiles and direct red-card sequencing. His red-card bonus and the recommended Knife/Spinach direction reward deliberate use of low-cost attacks. His starting emphasis on Amount +1 projectile effects makes each successful projectile sequence more noticeable.
Choose one plan before the first reward screen. If you select Imelda, prioritize yellow support and experience effects; if you select Gennaro, prioritize red cards and projectile quantity. This constraint is useful: it stops the first run from becoming a collection of unrelated cards.
2. Build the opening chain before chasing a perfect deck
At each level-up, first ask whether the option supplies a missing cost in your usual chain. A dependable 0-1-2 sequence is often more useful than a spectacular card that can be played only occasionally. Add a 3-cost finisher once the lower links are reliable, then consider Wild cards for the gaps that remain.
- Keep enough low-cost cards to start turns consistently.
- Take a higher-cost finisher only when your deck can reach it without wasting the preceding plays.
- Prefer cards that trigger your leader’s color effect when two choices are otherwise close.
- Remove or avoid redundant cards when the deck becomes too wide to assemble chains.
3. Spend defensive cards at the right moment
Defense is not a failed attack. A blue card that prevents a lethal hit can preserve an entire run and allow the next encounter’s reward to compound your progress. The mistake is spending your only defensive card early just to maintain a chain when the enemy has no immediate threat. Read the encounter, not just the multiplier.

4. Treat temporary power and permanent power differently
A weapon card selected during a level-up improves the current crawl. A village upgrade bought with gold improves later attempts as well. When a run is already stable, saving gold for a persistent upgrade can produce more long-term value than buying a marginal temporary effect.
Beginner village upgrade order
Village upgrades persist between runs. PC Gamer’s early economy recommendation is to stabilize recovery and reward quality first, then extend buffs and improve offensive statistics. The listed prices are for the first levels described in that guide and are not a promise that every later level costs the same.
| Priority | Upgrade | Early cost or effect | Why it comes early |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recovery | 500 coins for the first level; restores 1 HP after every encounter | Reduces attrition and gives failed or learning runs more room to recover |
| 2 | Reroll | 250 coins for one early level; improves reward selection | Raises the chance of finding cards that complete your intended chain |
| 3 | Duration | Buy one or two early levels | Keeps Crawler buffs active longer |
| 4 | Might | First level increases the relevant stat by 20% | Shortens fights once your survival baseline is secure |
| 5 | Luck | First level increases the relevant stat by 20% | Improves the quality or variance of future opportunities, depending on the system’s roll |
| Later | Armor and Growth | Costs and exact progression vary by level | Invest after the opening economy and chain consistency are working |
Recovery is the best first purchase for most new players because it pays back in every encounter rather than only in ideal fights. Reroll follows because a better reward choice can fix a missing chain link. Duration is more valuable after you have buffs worth extending. Might and Luck then convert a stable run into faster or more rewarding runs. Armor and Growth are sensible savings targets once these first levels no longer solve your immediate problems.

Character-specific beginner plans
Imelda: the learning and scaling route
Imelda’s experience-focused passive gives you more chances to inspect cards and upgrades. Use that information advantage to assemble a compact yellow-centered engine rather than taking every experience card you see. Yellow Stat Boost cards should support a repeatable sequence, and red or other-color cards are worth adding when they provide a clear finisher or activate a useful secondary effect.
- Open with low-cost cards so experience effects do not delay your first useful chain.
- Use yellow follow-ups to improve later attacks instead of spending every turn on immediate damage.
- Keep at least one defensive option when an experience-heavy hand leaves you vulnerable.
- Use the extra choices to remove weak cards from your plan, not merely to make the deck larger.
Gennaro: cheap projectiles and red-card timing
Gennaro is a natural fit for players who enjoy seeing several inexpensive projectiles accumulate damage. The recommended Knife/Spinach direction combines a cheap projectile identity with stronger offensive scaling. His Amount +1 projectile emphasis means that adding another projectile can be more important than adding a single expensive attack.
- Prioritize red cards that can occupy the early links of a chain.
- Use Knife or similar cheap projectile plays to establish momentum before committing to a finisher.
- Choose projectile amount or scaling when it improves several attacks, not only one isolated card.
- Do not force red cards into a turn where a blue defensive card is required to survive.
Progression route after Mad Forest
Mad Forest is the first major benchmark, but it is not the endpoint. The following route gives each unlock a purpose and avoids attempting the hardest gauntlet before your deck is ready.
Clear Mad Forest and establish your economy
Use the first clears to learn enemy timing, build an ascending-cost core, and earn enough gold for Recovery. The FAQ route also identifies reaching level 10 in Mad Forest as the requirement for opening Inlaid Library. Level requirements are patch-sensitive; if the current build shows a different threshold, follow the in-game unlock text.
Run Furious Forest for the Polentir Relic
After your first Mad Forest clear, pursue Furious Forest for the Polentir Relic. Polentir unlocks the Fortune Teller’s tent and Arcana. Arcana provides a large passive build modifier, so this is a major improvement to the power available before a battle begins. Do not treat the relic as a minor collectible: it changes how you evaluate a complete deck.
Enter Inlaid Library and find the Grim Grimoire
Once Inlaid Library is available, clear it to access the Library West Wing and the Grim Grimoire. The Grim Grimoire records discovered weapon evolutions, turning experimentation into a permanent reference. If you are testing a new evolution, record which base cards and conditions produced it in your own notes as well; the in-game book is the authoritative record for your account.
Prepare for Teeny Bridge and the Blacksmith
The beginner route points to reaching level 15 in Inlaid Library for Teeny Bridge-related progression. Teeny Bridge is a combat gauntlet, so enter with a deck that can survive several encounters rather than one that produces a single enormous turn. Clearing it yields the Stardust Anvil, which unlocks the Blacksmith’s Shop and gem slots.

Gem slots and Blacksmith access expand customization, but they do not replace chain discipline. A poorly sequenced deck with more customization options can still lose to a smaller deck that reliably completes its costs. Verify the exact level and unlock conditions against the current game build because progression rules can be adjusted in patches.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between competing upgrades
Consistency versus ceiling
Reroll levels and compact decks improve consistency: you see more usable rewards and complete more chains. High-variance cards can create a larger peak but may sit unusable in several encounters. Choose consistency while learning or when a progression clear is required; pursue a higher ceiling after your deck can already survive routine fights.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSurvivability versus damage
Recovery, blue Defense cards, and later armor reduce the chance that one bad encounter ends a run. Might, projectile scaling, and red Attack cards shorten fights. If you are dying before reaching your intended unlock, take survivability. If you routinely finish with health to spare, shift the next investment toward damage.
Immediate power versus meta progression
A run-specific card is correct when it solves the next encounter or completes your chain now. A village upgrade is correct when the run is stable and the purchase will improve many future attempts. The same gold decision can therefore be right or wrong depending on whether you are one fight from a clear or still learning the route.
Learning curve versus payoff
Imelda offers a straightforward experience-scaling lesson and more frequent opportunities to inspect options. Gennaro rewards deliberate projectile and red-card sequencing. Start with Imelda if you are still learning costs and triggers; move to Gennaro when you want a more aggressive, timing-focused plan.
Common beginner mistakes and fixes
Playing the strongest card first
Symptom: the expensive attack lands, but the rest of the hand produces little value. Fix: inspect the 0-, 1-, and 2-cost cards first and reserve the expensive card for the end of a meaningful chain.
Breaking a chain for a weak side effect
Symptom: a minor buff or low-damage card interrupts a sequence that was one link from completion. Fix: compare the side effect with the Combo Stack payoff and keep the chain unless the side card prevents immediate danger.

Drafting attractive cards without a color plan
Symptom: the deck contains many powerful cards but rarely activates the leader’s trigger. Fix: choose the leader’s preferred color first, then take off-color cards only when they provide defense, mana, or an essential finisher.
Ignoring Wild cards until the end of a run
Symptom: a nearly complete chain repeatedly fails because one cost is missing. Fix: use a Wild card to patch that gap when the resulting chain has a real payoff. Do not spend Wild cards on low-value turns.
Buying damage before Recovery
Symptom: each attempt ends from gradual HP loss even though individual fights are winnable. Fix: buy the first Recovery level for 500 coins before prioritizing Might or Luck, unless a specific unlock demands immediate damage.
Attempting Teeny Bridge with a fragile burst deck
Symptom: the deck wins ordinary encounters but collapses during the gauntlet. Fix: add a dependable defense option, preserve low-cost chain links, and enter only after your Inlaid Library runs are consistently reaching the required progression.
A compact checklist for every run
- Choose a leader and identify the color trigger before drafting.
- Look for a 0-1-2 opening chain and a useful 3-cost finisher.
- Keep one defensive answer for dangerous encounters.
- Use Wild cards to repair meaningful gaps, not weak turns.
- At level-up, favor cards that improve consistency or activate your leader.
- Spend persistent gold on Recovery first, then Reroll, Duration, Might, and Luck in the early economy.
- Clear Mad Forest, unlock Inlaid Library at the displayed threshold, and pursue Furious Forest for Polentir.
- Use the Library West Wing and Grim Grimoire to track weapon evolutions.
- Attempt Teeny Bridge only when your deck can handle a multi-fight gauntlet.
- Check current in-game unlock text after patches, especially for level requirements.
What to do after your first successful clear
After Mad Forest, do not simply repeat the same run for a bigger damage number. Use the next attempt to target one permanent improvement: Polentir and Arcana, the Grim Grimoire, or the Stardust Anvil. Keep the deck’s core sequencing rule intact while changing one variable at a time. That makes it clear whether a new character, color, relic, or gem slot actually improved your results.
The strongest beginner habit is disciplined evaluation. At every reward screen, ask whether a card makes the next chain more reliable, protects a known weakness, or advances the current unlock. If it does none of those things, pass it. Vampire Crawlers rewards the player who treats each card as part of a sequence rather than as an isolated source of power.
