A white charging LED is the available indication that a Valve Index controller is full. That color rule comes from a developer-badged Steam Community reply posted June 28, 2019, not from the Valve Index manual. For a second check, open SteamVR and inspect the controller’s battery indicator; treat the blocks as a status cross-check, not a guaranteed percentage meter.
That distinction matters because an Index controller can have power without being paired, show an error even after charging, or appear inactive because the charging connection is faulty. The dependable approach is to read the LED in context, verify the controller in SteamVR, and use Valve’s specified recovery procedure when it will not start.
What each Index controller light means
The controller LED can show power, pairing, errors, and (according to the cited community guidance) a completed charge. Those are different conditions, so do not interpret every color as a battery gauge.

| White while charging | Reported to mean fully charged. The exact statement, “White means fully charged,” was posted by a Steam Community account carrying a developer badge on June 28, 2019. It is community guidance, not wording from Valve’s manual. | Disconnect the cable when convenient, then verify operation in SteamVR. |
| Blue | Powered but not paired, according to Steam Support. | Use SteamVR’s controller-pairing workflow rather than assuming the battery is empty. |
| Flashing red | Error state, according to Steam Support. | Reconnect the controller, retry pairing, and use the reset procedure below if it will not start normally. |
| Off | The controller is not powered, according to Steam Support. | Connect USB-C power and check the cable, port, and power source. |
The manual does not provide a white/amber charging chart or a charge-time estimate. Therefore, a white LED is the best documented full-charge cue available, but it should not be presented as a line from the manual or as a measured battery percentage.

Separate charge status from connection status
A common mistake is to treat the LED as a single battery meter. In practice, the documented states answer different questions:
- White while charging: the developer-badged Steam Community reply says charging is complete.
- Blue: the controller has power, but Steam Support says it is not paired.
- Flashing red: the controller is reporting an error.
- Off: Steam Support identifies it as not powered.
Blue therefore does not prove that the battery is empty, and an off LED does not tell you whether the battery is merely depleted or whether the cable, port, or controller has a fault. Use the status that is actually documented for the color you see, then perform the appropriate next check.
Use SteamVR as a second check
SteamVR can show battery blocks for each Index controller. This is useful when the LED is difficult to see in a dark room, when you want to check both controllers at once, or when you want to confirm that a controller is recognized after charging.
Recommended Free Tools
- Connect the headset and base stations, start SteamVR, and wait until the system is running normally.
- Wake the controller you want to inspect.
- Look for that controller’s battery indicator in the SteamVR interface. Confirm that you are reading the correct left or right controller if both are connected.
- Compare the indicator with the physical LED. A white LED plus a high or full-looking SteamVR indicator is a sensible practical confirmation.
Community discussion describes the SteamVR blocks as a way to check charge, but the available sources do not establish their exact percentage accuracy. Do not convert the blocks into a precise numeric claim such as “the battery is at 83 percent.” Use the display to distinguish a substantially charged controller from one that needs power.
When the two checks appear to disagree
If the LED is white but SteamVR does not show the controller, the issue is more likely recognition or pairing than proof that charging failed. Wake the controller, check that the correct left or right device is selected, and restart SteamVR if necessary. Conversely, if SteamVR shows a battery block but the physical LED is off, check whether the controller is still powered and whether the cable connection changed; an interface display cannot replace inspection of the hardware.
SteamVR’s blocks are also most useful as a trend or general state. They can tell you that one controller is substantially more charged than the other, but the cited material does not support translating a particular number of blocks into a precise runtime or percentage. Avoid promising how many hours of play remain.
Charge the controller with the correct connection
Use the USB Type-C port
Valve’s Index manual lists USB Type-C charging cables with the controllers. Insert the cable firmly into the controller’s charging port and connect the other end to a suitable USB power source. The included kit contains two USB Type-C charging cables, so a missing or damaged cable is the reason to obtain a replacement USB Type-C cable; no particular third-party model is established as tested or endorsed here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBecause both controllers use the same connector type, identify which controller is being charged before interpreting the LED or SteamVR display. Charging one controller does not charge the other. If you are preparing a pair for a session, inspect each controller individually and then confirm both in SteamVR.

Choose an adequate USB power source
Steam Support’s retrieved guidance says a USB charging port capable of at least 1 amp can be used for fast charging with the included Type-A-to-Type-C cable. This is a minimum capability stated by the support guidance, not a promise that every charger, cable, or outlet will charge at the same rate. If a computer port does not provide reliable power, try another known-good USB port or a suitable USB power adapter that meets that one-amp requirement.
Do not infer a precise charging speed from the port’s label. The cited material gives no normal full-charge duration and no laboratory comparison of chargers or cables. The practical test is whether the controller consistently begins charging, reaches the reported white indication, and remains recognized when you start SteamVR.
Check the physical connection
- Inspect both ends of the cable for looseness, bent parts, cuts, or contamination.
- Push the Type-C plug fully into the controller. A plug that feels inserted but is not seated can leave the LED off.
- Try the second included cable if the first one is unavailable or suspect.
- Try another compatible USB power port. If the LED changes with the port or cable, the original charging path is the likely fault.
- Keep the controller still while charging so a loose connector is not repeatedly interrupted.
- Charge only one controller per cable and confirm that the cable is actually connected to a powered port, not merely to an unpowered hub or disconnected computer.
These checks are diagnostic, not a substitute for opening the controller. If the symptom follows the controller after you have changed both cable and port, stop experimenting with internal hardware and use authorized support.
Follow the documented recovery procedure when it will not power on
Steam Support gives a short reset sequence for an Index controller that does not start. Follow the order exactly:
- Plug the controller in via USB and leave it charging for 10 minutes.
- Unplug the USB cable.
- Press and hold the System button for 15 seconds.
- Release the System button.
- Press the System button again to power the controller on.
If the controller still does not power on after this sequence, Steam Support directs you to contact Steam Support rather than repeatedly forcing resets or opening the hardware. The ten-minute charge in this procedure is a recovery step, not a published full-charge time.
Keep the timing separate: ten minutes is the minimum charging interval specified for this recovery attempt, while 15 seconds is the System-button hold. Charging for ten minutes does not mean the battery is full, and holding the button for longer is not documented as an improved reset. If there is no response, repeat the connection checks once and then escalate.
Troubleshoot by the observed symptom
The LED is white, but SteamVR does not see the controller
White indicates the reported full-charge condition, not successful pairing. Wake the controller and check SteamVR for recognition. If it is absent, treat the problem as connection or pairing rather than as a battery-capacity problem. Reconnect the headset and base stations, restart SteamVR, and run the normal controller-pairing workflow. A full battery cannot make an unpaired controller appear automatically.

If only one of two controllers is missing, verify that you are checking the correct side in SteamVR and that the missing unit itself is awake. Do not assume that a white LED on the visible controller confirms the charge or pairing state of the other one.

The LED is blue
Steam Support defines blue as powered but not paired. Keep the controller connected to power if needed, then pair it through SteamVR. Do not wait for the blue color to turn white as a pairing fix: the color is describing the connection state, not proving that the battery is empty or full.
Pairing and charging can be addressed in either order: first make sure the controller has enough power to stay on, then use SteamVR’s pairing workflow. If it remains blue after pairing attempts, check the headset, base stations, and SteamVR session before concluding that the battery is defective.
The LED flashes red
Flashing red is documented as an error state. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, make sure the controller has had a period of charging, and retry startup. If normal startup does not return, perform the ten-minute charge and 15-second System-button procedure. Persistent red flashing warrants Steam Support assistance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Red flashing is not a documented low-battery percentage warning in the cited material. Treat it as an error indication, record what happened immediately before it appeared, and avoid opening the enclosure to investigate.
The LED stays off
An off LED means the controller is not powered according to Steam Support. Start with the cable and power source: use a known-good USB Type-C cable, a USB port capable of at least 1 amp, and a firmly seated plug. Leave it connected for the ten-minute recovery charge before attempting the reset. If there is still no light or response, escalate to Steam Support.
Try the second included cable and a second power port before deciding that the controller itself has failed. If the LED remains off across both combinations, the repeated result is useful information for support; do not keep applying force to the connector.
The controller appears to charge intermittently
Intermittent behavior usually points to the charging path rather than a meaningful new LED state. Test the other included cable, another USB power port, and the connector’s fit. Avoid moving the plug while charging. If the behavior follows the controller across cables and ports, stop using that hardware and request authorized service instead of trying to repair it internally.
One controller finishes before the other
The cited material does not provide a normal charge-time specification or a claim that two controllers charge at identical speeds. Check each cable, port, and connector separately, then use each controller’s LED and SteamVR block as its own status check. Do not diagnose a battery fault solely because the left and right indicators change at different times.

Temperature, battery service, and safety limits
Valve’s March 2021 Index manual identifies the controller battery as a non-replaceable lithium-ion battery. It specifies a charging temperature range of 0–45°C (32–113°F). Charge within that range, keep the controller away from substantial heat or freezing conditions, and let an unusually hot or cold controller return to a suitable temperature before charging.
Do not open the controller to replace the battery or investigate the electronics. Valve warns against self-servicing and directs battery service or recycling to an authorized provider. Opening the enclosure can create a lithium-ion safety hazard and can damage the controller. If the battery no longer holds a practical charge, arrange authorized service rather than fitting an unverified replacement cell.
The temperature range is a charging limit, not a promise about storage or operating performance outside it. The safe response to an unusually hot or cold unit is to move it to a suitable environment and wait for it to return to that range before connecting power. If the controller is damaged, swollen, leaking, or unusually hot, do not continue charging; seek authorized assistance.

A reliable charging routine
- Before play, connect each controller to USB Type-C power using one of the included cables or a compatible replacement.
- Use a USB source rated for at least 1 amp, as described by Steam Support’s charging guidance.
- Check that the connector is fully seated and that the controller is in the 0–45°C (32–113°F) charging range.
- Watch the LED. When it is white, use the developer-badged Steam Community guidance as the indication that charging is complete.
- Start SteamVR and check the corresponding battery block for a second, non-numeric confirmation that the controller is recognized and substantially charged.
- Disconnect the cable when you are ready to use the controller wirelessly, and store the cable where it will not be pulled sideways from the USB-C port.
- Repeat the check for the other controller rather than assuming both reached the same state.
This routine separates three questions that are often confused: whether the controller has power, whether it is paired, and whether its battery is full. The LED states and SteamVR indicator answer those questions in different ways.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the available evidence does—and does not—establish
- The white-full rule is attributed to a June 28, 2019 Steam Community reply by a developer-badged account.
- The official Valve manual confirms USB Type-C cables, two cables in the kit, the non-replaceable lithium-ion battery, and the 0–45°C (32–113°F) charging range.
- Steam Support documents blue as powered but unpaired, flashing red as an error, and off as not powered.
- Steam Support provides the ten-minute USB charge, unplug, 15-second System-button reset procedure.
- No source here supplies a normal full-charge duration, a verified percentage accuracy for SteamVR’s battery blocks, or laboratory measurements of charging speed.
Consequently, the practical answer is to use the white LED as the reported completion signal, confirm recognition and general charge level in SteamVR, and use the documented reset and support path when the controller does not behave normally.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know when my Valve Index controller is fully charged?
While it is connected by USB Type-C, a white LED is reported to mean fully charged. That exact wording comes from a developer-badged Steam Community reply dated June 28, 2019, rather than from the Valve manual. Check the controller in SteamVR as a second, general confirmation.
Does a blue light mean the battery is low?
No. Steam Support identifies blue as powered but not paired. Pair the controller through SteamVR; do not use blue alone to estimate battery level.

What should I do if the LED is off?
An off LED means the controller is not powered. Check a firmly seated USB Type-C cable, try the second included cable and another USB port rated for at least 1 amp, leave it charging for 10 minutes, then perform the documented reset. Contact Steam Support if it remains unresponsive.
How long does a Valve Index controller take to charge?
The cited Valve manual and support guidance do not provide a normal full-charge duration. The only stated time is 10 minutes of USB charging as part of the recovery procedure for a controller that will not power on; that is not a full-charge estimate.
Can SteamVR show the exact battery percentage?
SteamVR shows battery blocks that are useful for a general charge check, but the cited material does not establish their exact percentage accuracy. Treat them as a cross-check, not a precise numeric meter.
What charger or cable should I use?
Use the controller’s USB Type-C port. Valve lists two USB Type-C charging cables in the kit. Steam Support says a USB charging port capable of at least 1 amp can be used for fast charging with the included Type-A-to-Type-C cable. No specific third-party cable is established as tested or endorsed here.
Can I replace the Index controller battery myself?
No. Valve identifies the battery as non-replaceable lithium-ion and directs battery service or recycling to an authorized provider. Do not open the controller or install an unverified replacement cell.
What temperature is safe for charging?
Valve’s March 2021 manual specifies a charging range of 0–45°C (32–113°F). Let an unusually hot or cold controller return to that range before charging.
Why is one controller white while the other is not?
Each controller has its own battery and charging connection. Check the left and right units separately, test their cables and ports, and inspect each one in SteamVR. The available material does not require both controllers to change indicators at the same time.
The Bottom Line
For a Valve Index controller, the best documented full-charge cue is a white LED while charging, based on a June 28, 2019 developer-badged Steam Community reply. Confirm the controller’s general status in SteamVR, remember that blue means powered but unpaired, flashing red means an error, and off means not powered. Use USB Type-C power from a port rated for at least 1 amp, keep charging between 0 and 45°C (32–113°F), and follow the 10-minute charge plus 15-second System-button reset when the controller will not start. Battery replacement belongs with an authorized provider.
