Short answer: Valve Index works with either the original HTC Vive (1.0) base stations or Valve (2.0) base stations, but you cannot combine 1.0 and 2.0 stations in one room. You need a VR-ready PC, SteamVR, a DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer connection, USB, and at least one SteamVR-tracking base station; two stations are the practical choice for room-scale play.
Index controllers also work with HTC Vive and HTC Vive Pro headsets that support SteamVR Tracking. Valve’s catalog lists separate left and right replacement controllers, a two-pack face gasket, and a replacement tether. Availability and regional shipping change, so match every replacement to your existing hardware before ordering.
What a complete Valve Index setup requires
Valve Index is a PC VR system, not a self-contained headset. Tracking, rendering, and SteamVR processing are handled by your computer and the room’s SteamVR base stations. Before buying a replacement part or planning a play area, check these requirements.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Component | Minimum or supported requirement | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10, SteamOS, or Linux | Install a supported operating-system build and keep graphics and USB drivers current. |
| Graphics card | Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD RX 480 minimum; Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 or better recommended | The minimum can run VR, but a recommended-class GPU gives more headroom for demanding games and higher settings. |
| Video connection | DisplayPort 1.2 or newer | Index does not support HDMI or DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters. Connect directly to a compatible DisplayPort output on the computer. |
| USB | USB 2.0 or newer for the headset; USB 3.0 or newer for headset pass-through cameras | If you want the camera-based pass-through features, use a USB 3.0 connection rather than relying on a USB 2.0 port. |
| Software | Steam and SteamVR | Install SteamVR, update it, and complete room setup before judging tracking or controller problems. |
| Tracking hardware | At least one SteamVR-tracking base station; two recommended | One station can support seated or standing use, while two provide the coverage and redundancy expected for room-scale play. |
Steam’s official VR-readiness test is useful before installation. It checks whether the computer is likely to meet the graphics and performance requirements, but it does not replace checking the physical DisplayPort and USB connections.

Which base stations work with Valve Index?
Index accepts both generations of SteamVR Lighthouse base stations:
- Generation 1.0: the original HTC-branded Vive base stations.
- Generation 2.0: Valve-branded base stations sold for SteamVR systems.
The headset is compatible with either generation. The important restriction is that the generations are alternatives, not mix-and-match components. Steam Support states that 1.0 (HTC-branded) and 2.0 (Valve-branded) base stations will not work with each other in the same VR setup.
Can you mix 1.0 and 2.0 base stations?
No. A room containing one 1.0 station and one 2.0 station is not a supported tracking configuration. If your existing room uses 1.0 stations, replace a failed unit with another 1.0-compatible station. If it uses 2.0 stations, buy a 2.0 replacement. When changing generations, replace the complete set rather than combining old and new units.

How many base stations do you need?
Steam Support lists one base station as the minimum and two as the recommended arrangement. One can be suitable for seated or standing-only use, particularly when the headset and controllers remain in the station’s view. Two stations are recommended even in those modes because they reduce occlusion and improve tracking reliability when you turn away from a single unit.
For room-scale play, plan on two stations positioned so each can see the play area from a different angle. In spaces larger than 5 m × 5 m (about 16 ft × 16 ft), Steam says additional stations may improve coverage and tracking accuracy. Extra stations must still be from the same generation as the existing units.
Base-station selection table
| Your existing room | Replacement to choose | Mixing rule | Best use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTC Vive 1.0 stations | Another 1.0 station | Do not add a 2.0 station | Existing 1.0 room, seated, standing, or room-scale play |
| Valve 2.0 stations | Another 2.0 station | Do not add a 1.0 station | Existing 2.0 room, especially larger or room-scale spaces |
| No stations yet | Choose a complete set of one generation | Keep every station in the set at the same generation | New Index installation |

That means an HTC Vive controller can be used in an Index tracking environment when the headset, base stations, and controller generation are supported by SteamVR. Controller compatibility is separate from base-station-generation compatibility: a controller may support both headset families, but the room still cannot combine 1.0 and 2.0 stations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to check before pairing a controller
- Confirm that the headset supports SteamVR Tracking.
- Confirm that the base stations are a supported, same-generation set.
- Connect the headset and receiver hardware, start SteamVR, and pair the controller through SteamVR’s controller-pairing workflow.
- Update SteamVR and controller firmware when prompted.
- Test every button, trigger, thumbstick, and tracking movement in the SteamVR dashboard before entering a game.
If a controller pairs but drifts, disappears, or loses tracking, first check station visibility, reflective surfaces, and USB or DisplayPort connections. Pairing alone does not prove that the room layout is providing reliable optical coverage.

Replacement-controller checklist
| Check | Why it matters | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Left or right side | The Index controller catalog is split by hand. | Separate left and right replacement listings are official. |
| Headset compatibility | You need a SteamVR-Tracking-compatible headset. | Valve lists Index, HTC Vive, and HTC Vive Pro support. |
| Base-station generation | Tracking still depends on the room’s stations. | Use a supported, same-generation station setup; 1.0 and 2.0 cannot be mixed. |
| Charging cable and lanyard | These accessories affect how quickly you can use the replacement. | Included cable and lanyard details are not stated in the catalog facts above; confirm the live listing. |
| Condition and warranty | New, refurbished, and used units can have different return rights. | Condition and warranty are not established by the compatibility information; read the current listing terms. |
| Current stock and regional delivery | Store inventory and shipping coverage change. | Availability is volatile and must be checked at purchase time. |
Face gasket and tether replacements
The face gasket is listed as a two-pack for the Index headset. Match the listing to the Valve Index model and confirm the package contents before ordering. A replacement tether is the cable assembly intended for the Index headset; check connector fit and the return policy if you are buying from a marketplace rather than directly from Valve’s catalog.
How to install and configure Index step by step
- Prepare the computer. Use Windows 10, SteamOS, or Linux, install the current graphics driver, and confirm that the GPU meets at least the GTX 970 or RX 480 minimum. GTX 1070-class or better graphics are recommended.
- Connect the headset directly. Plug Index into a DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output and a USB port. Do not use HDMI or a DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter. Use USB 3.0 or newer if you need the headset’s pass-through cameras; USB 2.0 is the stated headset minimum.
- Install SteamVR. In Steam, install SteamVR, launch it, and allow updates to complete before pairing controllers.
- Place the base stations. Install at least one station for seated or standing use, or two for room-scale. Keep the stations from the same generation and position them to see the play area. Larger than 5 m × 5 m areas may benefit from additional same-generation stations.
- Clear the play area. Steam’s setup guidance calls for at least 2 m × 1.5 m (6.5 ft × 5 ft) of unobstructed space for room-scale play. Remove furniture, cables, pets, and other obstacles from that footprint.
- Run room setup. In SteamVR, start the room-setup process and choose the seated, standing, or room-scale option that matches your space. For room-scale, trace the usable boundary carefully and keep the outlined area smaller than any obstacle.
- Pair the controllers. Open SteamVR’s controller-pairing command, hold the required pairing buttons on each controller, and wait for both sides to appear. Charge each controller and apply firmware updates when SteamVR offers them.
- Test tracking and inputs. Walk through the boundary, turn your back to each station, squeeze the triggers, move the thumbsticks, and verify that the headset remains stable. Fix coverage or connection problems before launching a game.
Room layout and tracking reliability
Minimum space
The official minimum clear room-scale area is 2 m × 1.5 m. That is the tracked footprint, not a recommendation to fill the boundary with furniture. Leave a margin around walls and hard objects so a player’s hands and headset do not strike them.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Station visibility
SteamVR tracking depends on the stations seeing the headset and controllers. Put two stations in locations that give crossing lines of sight across the play area. Cover or remove large mirrors, glossy televisions, and other highly reflective surfaces if they cause intermittent tracking. A single station can be adequate for a fixed seated position, but turning away from it can create blind spots.
Large spaces
When the area exceeds 5 m × 5 m, additional same-generation stations can improve coverage and tracking accuracy. Do not solve a coverage problem by adding a station from the other generation; generation mixing remains unsupported regardless of room size.
Troubleshooting common compatibility and replacement problems
“The headset has no display”
- Confirm that the cable is connected to a native DisplayPort 1.2-or-newer output on the graphics card.
- Remove HDMI and DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters; Index does not support them.
- Reseat the USB connection and try a USB 3.0-or-newer port if pass-through cameras are required.
- Restart SteamVR after updating the graphics driver.
“One base station is not detected”
- Check that both stations are the same generation: all 1.0 or all 2.0.
- Verify power and status indicators, then restart SteamVR.
- Move the station to restore an unobstructed view of the play area.
- If the room is larger than 5 m × 5 m, consider additional stations from that same generation.
“The controller pairs but loses tracking”
- Check that the controller, headset, and base stations are all operating through SteamVR Tracking.
- Use two stations for room-scale and test tracking at the edges and corners of the boundary.
- Remove reflective objects and obstacles that block station visibility.
- Charge the controller, update firmware, and pair it again after SteamVR restarts.
“I ordered the wrong replacement”
Controller listings are hand-specific. Check the left/right designation, Index compatibility, package contents, condition, warranty, and return terms before opening the package. For a tether or gasket, verify that the listing explicitly names Valve Index and that the connector or fit matches the headset.

No definitive manufacturing end date or long-term parts-service policy is published for Index. Treat replacement availability as volatile rather than assuming that a part will remain in stock. Check the live Steam catalog or retailer listing for regional inventory, shipping, current condition, warranty, and returns.
For a failed station, identify the generation already installed before shopping. For a failed controller, identify the hand first. For a cable or gasket, match the exact Index component and review connector or fit details. These checks prevent the most expensive compatibility mistakes: buying a 2.0 station for a 1.0 room, buying the opposite-hand controller, or using an adapter that Index does not support.
Quick Recap
Quick decision guide
| If you are trying to… | Choose or do this |
|---|---|
| Play seated with an Index | Use at least one same-generation SteamVR base station; two are still recommended for reliability. |
