Valve closed SteamOS issue #13727 on October 12, 2026, because the request to expose Steam Frame’s host video-decoder device to Android apps in the Lepton container was already tracked in a separate Lepton work item. The proposed opt-in mount was reported to decode HEVC Main (8-bit) and HEVC Main10 (10-bit) in a custom container, but the upstream implementation status is not publicly verifiable from the accessible record.
What Valve closed
Issue #13727 in ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux asked for a supported way to let Android native applications running inside Steam Frame’s Lepton container use the SteamOS host’s V4L2 hardware decoder. The report described a device-exposure problem: /dev/video-dec0 existed and was accessible on the SteamOS host, but the stock Lepton container did not contain that device node.
This was not a proposal for a new codec implementation or decoding algorithm. It was a request to pass an existing host device through the container boundary in a controlled, supported way.
Why the GitHub issue was marked duplicate
Valve maintainer kisak-valve closed the issue on October 12, 2026, with the statement: “Hello @ijingo , this issue is already being tracked at https://gitlab.steamos.cloud/frame-public/lepton/-/work_items/1 . Closing as a duplicate.”

The referenced Lepton work item is the canonical place Valve identified for this request. Its page returned an access-denied response when checked, so its current implementation state, milestones and delivery date cannot be independently confirmed. Closing the GitHub report therefore means the request was consolidated, not that a public release had already shipped.
How the proposed patch exposed hardware decoding
The reporter tested a change in liblepton/mounting.sh. Its behavior was narrowly scoped:

- Resolve the host device path for the V4L2 decoder.
- Mount that device into the Lepton container as
/dev/video-dec0. - Perform the mount only when
LEPTON_ENABLE_VIDEO_DECODE=true. - Leave the setting disabled by default and expose only the decoder node, rather than broad access to unrelated video devices.
That design makes the feature opt-in. A custom container has to include the mounting change and set the environment variable; the stock container’s absence of /dev/video-dec0 means an Android application cannot simply open the node without that integration.
Was the hardware-decoding test successful?
According to the reporter, the custom container confirmed hardware decoding for two HEVC profiles:

| HEVC Main, 8-bit | Hardware decoding confirmed in the custom container |
| HEVC Main10, 10-bit | Hardware decoding confirmed in the custom container |
These are the only named format results in the report. No independent benchmark, latency measurement, throughput figure or power result was published, so the report does not establish performance across other codecs, profiles or applications.
What this means for Android apps on Steam Frame
Access requires container integration
An Android native app running inside Lepton would need the decoder device to be present inside its container namespace. The tested approach supplies that device from the host; it does not change Android’s media APIs or add a software fallback.

The flag is intentionally opt-in
Because LEPTON_ENABLE_VIDEO_DECODE defaults to off, users should not assume that every Steam Frame image exposes hardware decoding. Enabling it also depends on the container’s mounting script and the host device path resolving correctly.
Only one device node was exposed
The patch mounted /dev/video-dec0 and did not describe exposing a wider set of capture, encode or display devices. That narrower scope limits the requested container access, although the report does not provide a formal security audit.

Stock container versus the tested change
| Aspect | Stock Lepton container | Tested custom change |
|---|---|---|
/dev/video-dec0 |
Missing even though present on the SteamOS host | Mounted into the container |
| Activation | Not exposed by default | Requires LEPTON_ENABLE_VIDEO_DECODE=true |
| Device scope | No decoder node available to the app | Decoder node only |
| Reported formats | No result reported | HEVC Main 8-bit and HEVC Main10 10-bit |
What remains unknown
- Whether the Lepton work item has been merged, released or documented for end users.
- Whether the host device path remains stable across SteamOS updates and reboots.
- Which additional codecs and profiles work beyond the two HEVC results.
- Whether Valve will enable the feature by default or keep it opt-in.
- How Android applications should consume the node through a supported media framework.
Until Valve publishes those details, the practical distinction is between a demonstrated custom-container patch and an upstream-supported feature. The former showed that the host decoder could be made usable in Lepton; the latter has not been publicly confirmed.
Where Valve is tracking the work
Valve directed the duplicate report to the Frame-public Lepton work item. That link is the authoritative tracking location named in the closure comment, but access restrictions prevent verification of its current status.
