To communicate better in VALORANT, set up team and party voice in Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, bind the ping wheel in Settings > Controls > Communication, and make each call short enough for teammates to act on. Use voice when detail matters, a ping when a quick visual cue is enough, and mute or report abusive comms rather than escalating.
Which communication option should you use?
VALORANT offers team voice, party voice, text, and a customizable ping wheel. Choose the option that gets the necessary information to the right people with the least distraction.

Riot describes pings as a way to alert teammates without breaking concentration. Use one when the visual cue conveys what teammates need; switch to voice or text when the context needs explanation. Riot’s examples of useful communication include calling enemy locations, coordinating utility, and planning a retake. Those are practical examples, not evidence that any particular comms style increases win rate by a measured amount.

How do you set up team and party voice?
- Open Settings > Audio > Voice Chat.
- Select the intended microphone for input and headset or speakers for output.
- Confirm the voice channels you want to use are enabled. Team voice reaches the whole team; party voice is for your premade group.
- Check the displayed push-to-talk keybinds and change them if needed. Riot’s support article lists V for team voice and U for party voice as defaults, but keybinds can be changed and may not match your current setup.
- Run the in-game loopback test to check whether your microphone is being picked up and returned through the selected output.
Riot’s support guide says team voice uses push-to-talk, while party voice can use push-to-talk or automatic activation. Verify the current options and labels in your own client, since the cited support article is Japanese-language and describes the settings available when it was published on May 25, 2026. A headset with a microphone is one convenient input/output setup, but it is not required for pings and there is no need to replace equipment that already works.

How do you use the ping wheel without speaking?
- Go to Settings > Controls > Communication.
- Bind the ping wheel and any individual notifications you want to trigger directly, such as Need Support.
- Use the wheel’s Combat, Social, and Strategic categories to find a suitable signal.
- Look at the relevant location or object before pinging when you want the visual cue tied to what you are indicating.
Riot says players can customize bindings for the wheel and individual notifications. A ping is particularly useful when it communicates an immediate alert faster than a spoken callout. If teammates need to know why the cue matters or what to do next, add a concise voice or text explanation if appropriate.
What makes a callout useful?
Put the most immediately useful information first, then add only context teammates need to act. That ordering is practical editorial guidance, not a Riot rule or a tested formula.

Start in the game rather than changing several system settings at once. Riot’s voice troubleshooting guide recommends checking the in-game voice settings and loopback before moving on to the device and operating-system checks.

- Run loopback: In Settings > Audio > Voice Chat, use the loopback test. If you cannot hear the test, check that the selected input and output are the devices you intend to use.
- Check the channel: Confirm that you are speaking in team voice if you need the whole team to hear you, rather than only your party.
- Check push-to-talk: Confirm the displayed keybind, press it while speaking, and verify that it is not bound in a way that conflicts with another communication app.
- Check physical controls: Make sure the headset or microphone is not muted and its volume is turned up.
- Test the devices elsewhere: Verify that the microphone and output work outside the game. If they do not, address the device or system issue first.
- Check Windows settings if you play on Windows: Riot’s guide also lists Windows sound-device and microphone-privacy checks. These steps are Windows-specific; use the relevant audio and microphone permissions for your own platform.
If loopback works but teammates still cannot hear you, revisit the selected channel and push-to-talk behavior before troubleshooting the microphone itself. If voice is inconvenient or unavailable, the ping wheel remains a nonverbal way to signal teammates.
How can you keep comms respectful and safe?
Keep feedback about the play, not the person. Riot’s Playing with Respect article advises, “A useful rule of thumb is to keep it about the game, not the person.” Repeated noise and personal abuse make it harder for others to focus; a clear location or plan is more useful than an insult.

Riot’s Voice and Chat Restrictions support page identifies insulting, threatening, harassing, offensive, abusive, discriminatory, and hate-speech communication as rule-breaking. It lists comms restrictions, teamplay restrictions, and game bans among possible penalties; penalty durations may vary by region. Mute disruptive players and use the in-game reporting tools rather than replying with abuse.

Riot’s Respect article also reports that its Riot Voice Evaluation system identified and penalized twice as many instances of voice comms abuse over the preceding year. This is Riot’s relative figure about its moderation system, not a rate of abuse among players or an independent measure of match outcomes.

What accessibility and parental options are available?
Riot’s accessibility information lists VALORANT with multiple volume controls, stereo and surround sound, basic input remapping, and playability without motion controls. Riot cautions that features can vary by game, platform, mode, region, or version. The listing does not establish that every player’s communication needs are met, or list dedicated VALORANT speech-to-text or text-to-speech features.
For families in the United States playing VALORANT on PC, Riot’s July 15, 2026 parental-controls announcement describes optional controls to disable text and voice chat or limit them to friends. Riot says it is working to bring parental controls to more countries, so this availability should not be assumed outside the stated U.S. PC scope.
