VALORANT uses three related but different systems: the rank badge you can see, Rank Rating (RR), which moves you through that rank, and a hidden matchmaking rating (MMR), which Riot uses to find opponents and teammates of comparable skill. Your visible rank is not a direct readout of MMR, and Riot does not publish the complete formula that converts match results into RR.
That distinction explains why two players can win the same number of games but receive different RR changes, why a promotion does not necessarily make the next loss an instant demotion, and why an apparently uneven lobby can still be built around hidden skill estimates. The details below describe Riot’s published model and the changes documented in its Patch 13.00 notes; exact live thresholds and queue rules can change.
The three parts of VALORANT’s competitive system
Displayed rank: the badge on your profile
Your displayed rank is the public tier other players can see, such as Gold, Diamond or Ascendant. It is a progress label, not a complete measurement of your ability. The badge changes through RR milestones and is deliberately separated from the matchmaking rating Riot keeps hidden.

Riot added Ascendant between Diamond and Immortal in Patch 5.0 to spread players across more tiers and distinguish skill levels more finely. Older guides that jump directly from Diamond to Immortal are therefore outdated. Riot’s Patch 5.0 notes explain that historical change.

Rank Rating (RR): visible progress within a rank
RR is the number shown on your competitive progress bar. A win normally adds RR, while a loss normally removes it. When you accumulate enough RR to cross the boundary of your current tier, the displayed rank changes. Riot’s public explanation describes RR as the visible movement layer between your rank and the hidden matchmaking system.
RR is not a universal fixed payout for a win. Riot says the relationship between your displayed rank and MMR influences whether a result produces a relatively larger gain or loss. The exact current calculation can be adjusted by patches, so published examples should be treated as a model rather than a guaranteed number for every match. Riot’s Rank Rating explanation was published on March 18, 2021 and explicitly presents the calculation as something that may be tuned.
Hidden MMR: Riot’s matchmaking estimate
MMR is a rating Riot does not expose in the client. Its purpose is to estimate your skill for matchmaking, so the system can assemble games in which the teams have broadly comparable expected strength. MMR can move more fluidly than the visible badge. That separation helps Riot avoid making the public rank jump abruptly after a single result and reduces the chance of an immediate visible demotion after a promotion.
You cannot inspect your exact MMR, derive it reliably from one game’s scoreboard, or calculate it from a public formula. A player’s kills, combat score or other individual statistic may be part of Riot’s wider evaluation, but the official material cited here does not support the claim that personal performance alone determines rank. The most dependable evidence available to you is your sequence of match results and the RR changes attached to them.
| Layer | What you see | What it does | What is publicly known |
|---|---|---|---|
| Displayed rank | Tier and badge | Shows your public competitive standing | Rank names and order are visible; exact current thresholds are not established by the sources here |
| RR | Progress number or bar | Moves you toward or away from the next rank | Wins and losses change it; the rank-to-MMR relationship affects the size and direction of movement |
| MMR | Nothing directly in the client | Targets opponents and teammates for fairer matches | Riot confirms it is hidden and does not publish the complete formula |
Why the same result can give different RR
When MMR is above your displayed rank
Riot’s conceptual explanation says that if your hidden MMR is higher than your displayed rank suggests, the system tends to award larger RR gains for wins and smaller RR losses for defeats. The aim is to bring the public rank into alignment with the stronger matchmaking estimate. Riot calls this movement toward alignment convergence.

When rank and MMR are broadly aligned
When your displayed rank is close to the level represented by your MMR, gains and losses tend to be more similar. That does not mean every win and loss is identical: the match’s expected outcome, the opposing teams and later tuning can still affect the result.
When your displayed rank is above your MMR
If the public rank is higher than the hidden estimate, Riot’s explanation says wins tend to award less RR and losses tend to remove more. This is the situation players often describe as “getting less for a win and more for a loss.” It is not proof that the client is arbitrarily holding an account down; it is the published convergence model trying to move the two ratings closer together.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Those are directional rules, not a promise of a particular value. Riot has not released a current equation that lets a player predict “this win will be worth exactly X RR.” One match also cannot reveal whether your MMR is above or below rank with certainty.
How matchmaking uses MMR
- Results update the hidden estimate. Wins and losses provide the primary competitive signal in Riot’s public description. The hidden value can change before the visible badge catches up.
- The queue searches for a fair lobby. Riot uses MMR to target players of comparable expected skill, rather than matching only the badges currently displayed on profiles.
- The match outcome affects RR. The relationship between your rank and MMR helps determine how strongly the result moves your visible progress.
- The system gradually converges. Repeated results, rather than a single scoreboard, bring displayed rank and the hidden estimate closer together.
Because the system works with averages and a live queue, a lobby will not always show identical ranks on both teams. Region, platform, party composition, queue population and the current patch can all affect what is possible. A visible mismatch is not, by itself, evidence that MMR was ignored.
The current rank ladder
The commonly displayed ladder runs from Iron through Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal and Radiant. Most lower and middle tiers are divided into numbered sub-ranks; Radiant is the top tier. Riot’s official sources in this set do not establish a current table of RR thresholds for every tier, so a static number copied from an old guide should not be treated as a live rule.

The latest ranked source identified here is Riot’s VALORANT Patch 13.00. Riot says it adjusted RR calculations after allowing earlier MMR changes to settle, with the goal of helping players who consistently win feel less stuck. That is a patch-note description of the intended effect, not a promise that every winning account will receive a larger number.
For PC matchmaking, Riot states: We’ve made changes to our matchmaking to ensure the average rank of each team is within 1 sub-tier.
The statement describes a target for each team’s average displayed rank more often, not a guarantee that every individual player in a lobby will be within one sub-tier of every opponent. Party composition, queue availability and hidden MMR still matter.
Rules you should verify in the live client
The official pages available for this explanation include historical descriptions of placements, party restrictions, demotion behavior and leaderboard requirements. They do not establish the exact rules currently active in your region and patch. Use the Competitive interface and the current in-client tooltips before planning around a threshold.
- Placement matches: the exact current number and any reset behavior are not established here.
- Party queues: the current allowed rank spread, five-stack treatment and any RR adjustments are not established here.
- Demotion: the live protection or threshold rules are not established here.
- Leaderboard eligibility: the current requirements for Radiant or regional ranking are not established here.
- Act or episode resets: historical reset descriptions should not be assumed to apply to the current cycle.
The safest procedure is to open the Competitive screen, read the current queue and rank tooltips, and check the latest official patch notes for your platform. If the client and an old web guide disagree, the live client and newer official rule take precedence.

How to interpret common RR complaints
“I won, but my gain was small.”
A small gain can be consistent with the published convergence model when your displayed rank is at or above the level represented by MMR. It can also reflect the expected strength of the lobby or a later patch adjustment. Do not infer a hidden penalty from one result; look for a pattern across several matches.
“I lost and dropped more than I usually do.”
Riot’s explanation says losses can be larger when displayed rank is above MMR. The match’s expected outcome and current tuning may also matter. A single unusually large loss is not enough to calculate MMR or prove a system error.
“My top frag should have protected my rank.”
Riot’s published model does not say that topping the scoreboard overrides the match result. Competitive progression is not documented as a personal-performance-only ladder. Treat combat score as useful feedback for improving play, not as a guaranteed RR entitlement.
“The enemy team had a different visible rank.”
Displayed rank and hidden MMR are separate. Riot’s matchmaking target concerns team strength, and Patch 13.00’s wording refers to average team rank rather than identical badges. A visible spread can therefore occur without disproving the matchmaking model.

Competitive integrity and boosting enforcement

When Riot confirms abuse, it says consequences can include account suspension, reversions of RR and MMR, and reversal of rewards tied to manipulated rank. The practical lesson is straightforward: do not arrange opponents, intentionally trade wins, or use a stream to obtain an unfair information advantage. A short-term rank increase can be removed along with the rewards attached to it.
Why older VALORANT rank guides conflict with the client
Riot’s April 2020 beta article, VALORANT Ranks and Competitive Matchmaking, documents an early system. The January 2021 Episode 2 Act I Competitive Changes article describes rules and leaderboard details from that period. Those pages are useful for understanding how the system evolved, but their rank lists, placement figures and “top 500 per region” description are historical, not proof of today’s requirements.
The same caution applies to screenshots showing RR ranges, queue restrictions or reset behavior. A guide can be accurate for the episode in which it was written and wrong after a later patch. Check its publication date, then verify every numeric rule against the current Competitive screen.
A practical way to track your own progress
- Record the visible facts after each game: rank, RR before and after, win or loss, region, platform and party size.
- Review a series, not one match: compare several consecutive results so an isolated lobby or unusual gain does not dominate your conclusion.
- Separate skill feedback from rank feedback: use your gameplay statistics to identify improvement areas, while using RR and results to understand competitive progression.
- Mark patch and Act changes: note when a patch changes RR or matchmaking so you do not compare unlike periods as if the formula were fixed.
- Check official notes before acting on a threshold: especially for placements, party eligibility, demotion and leaderboard status.
This method cannot reveal MMR, because Riot keeps it hidden. It can, however, prevent the most common misread: treating a visible RR result as a complete explanation of the matchmaking system.
