Masters are the VALORANT Champions Tour’s mid-season international tournaments; Champions is the season-ending world championship. In 2026, Masters events award Championship Points and show which teams are genuine international contenders. Champions Shanghai uses Stage 2 results and those points to select a 16-team field, then crowns the VALORANT World Champion.
Masters and Champions in one sentence
Masters and Champions are both global VALORANT esports events, but they serve different roles in the VCT season. Masters sit inside the competitive calendar. They test teams against opponents from the four VCT territories—Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China—and award Championship Points that matter later in the season. Champions comes last. It is the final international event, where the field competes for the Champions Trophy and the title of VALORANT World Champion.

That distinction answers the most common question: a Masters trophy is a major international title, but it is not the same as winning the world championship. Champions is the event that decides the season’s world champion.

- Masters Santiago: the first global event of the year.
- Stage 1: the next round of regional league play.
- Masters London: the second global event.
- Stage 2: the final regional stage and the key route into Champions.
- Champions Shanghai: the season-ending global championship.
This order explains why the tournaments feel different even though both are international. Masters interrupt the regional season and provide a high-level checkpoint. Champions is the destination at the end of the entire qualification process.
Masters Santiago
Masters Santiago is the first 2026 global event. Twelve teams from the International Leagues qualify, and the tournament awards Championship Points. Its position early in the year means teams can establish international form and build a points total before the later stages of qualification.
Masters London
Masters London is the second 2026 Masters event. The top three teams from each territory’s Stage 1 playoffs qualify, creating a 12-team international field. Riot describes London as a milestone in the Championship Points race: results there affect the competitive picture heading into Stage 2 and Champions qualification.
Champions Shanghai
Champions Shanghai is the final and most prestigious 2026 event. Sixteen teams compete for the Champions Trophy and the title of VALORANT World Champion. Each territory sends its top two Stage 2 playoff teams and its top two Championship Point earners.

The table’s field sizes and qualification routes are specific to the 2026 structure. Riot changes VCT formats from season to season, so an older guide may describe a different number of teams or a different path to qualification.
How Masters qualification works
Masters places are earned through regional competition rather than open entry. Teams first play in their home territory’s VCT system. Strong finishes in the relevant regional playoffs then determine which organizations represent that territory at the international event.
The route to Masters London
For London in 2026, the rule is explicit: the top three teams from each territory’s Stage 1 playoffs qualify. With four territories, that produces 12 teams:

Because the selection is based on Stage 1 playoff placement, a team does not need to have won Masters Santiago to reach London. Its later regional result is the deciding qualification step for this event.
The role of earlier results
Masters Santiago also draws 12 teams from the International Leagues and awards Championship Points. The exact qualification mechanism for Santiago is part of the season’s official event rules, but the durable principle is that teams earn international opportunities through regional performance. Masters are not a permanent club competition with fixed invitees.
How Champions qualification works in 2026
Champions uses two qualification channels in every territory, balancing recent regional success with season-long consistency.
Stage 2 playoff qualifiers
Each territory sends its top two Stage 2 playoff teams. Stage 2 is the final regional stage before Champions, so this route rewards teams that peak at the end of the domestic schedule.
Championship Point qualifiers
Each territory also sends its top two Championship Point earners. Points accumulated through the season—including at Masters—therefore provide a second path to Shanghai. This route can benefit a team that performs consistently across multiple events even if it does not finish in the top two of the Stage 2 playoffs.
The resulting 16-team field
There are four territories and two places from each route in each territory:
- Four territories × two Stage 2 playoff teams = eight teams
- Four territories × two Championship Point leaders = eight teams
- Eight plus eight = 16 Champions teams
The qualification categories are distinct, although a team could finish highly in both. The official event rules determine how any overlap or duplicate qualification place is handled; the published 2026 summary establishes the two routes but does not state a separate replacement procedure.

Does winning a Masters event qualify a team for Champions?
Not automatically under the 2026 qualification summary. Winning Masters is valuable because Masters award Championship Points, and those points can help a team finish among its territory’s top two point earners. However, Champions places are awarded through the top-two Stage 2 playoff results and the top-two Championship Point standings in each territory. A Masters champion still has to satisfy one of those Champions qualification routes.

In practical terms, a Masters win improves a team’s position in the points race, but it is not described as a guaranteed Champions berth. A team that wins Santiago or London can still need a strong Stage 2 playoff result or enough total points to remain in the top two for its territory.
Is Champions bigger than Masters?
Yes, if “bigger” means the event’s place in the season and the title at stake. Champions is the world championship and the final tournament of the year. Its winner is officially the VALORANT World Champion.
Champions is also larger by the 2026 field-size comparison: 16 teams at Champions versus 12 at each Masters event. That does not make a Masters title unimportant. Masters is still a global tournament with elite teams from all four territories, and winning one is a major international achievement. The difference is the championship level: Masters identifies and rewards contenders during the season, while Champions decides who finishes it as world champion.
What Championship Points actually do
Championship Points are the season-long accounting system that connects the international events to Champions qualification. Masters results add to that total, and the final standings in each territory help select the four Championship Point qualifiers for Shanghai—two per territory.
Points should therefore be viewed as a cumulative safety net rather than a single-event trophy. A team can use strong results at more than one event to stay in contention, while a poor Stage 2 playoff finish does not necessarily end its season if its points total remains high enough. Conversely, a team that reaches the top two in Stage 2 can qualify through that playoff route without relying on a top-two points ranking.
The published 2026 summary does not provide a complete points table, tie-breaker order or the number of points awarded for every placement. Those details must be checked in the current season handbook when standings are calculated.

Why the two Masters events matter even before Champions
They provide international evidence
Regional records can be difficult to compare because each territory has its own league environment. Masters place teams in the same tournament, making international performance visible before the final event. A deep run can show that a team’s tactics and adaptation work outside its home region.
They create a points race
Because Masters award Championship Points, every international result can affect the eventual Shanghai field. The points race also gives viewers a way to track teams that are not currently leading their regional standings.

“Masters is a regional tournament.”
No. Masters is an international event. Regional stages determine qualification, but the qualified teams meet on a global stage representing the Americas, EMEA, Pacific and China.
“Champions is just another Masters.”
No. Both are international, but Champions is the season-ending world championship. It has a different qualification formula, a 16-team 2026 field and the World Champion title.
“A Masters winner is already the world champion.”
No. Masters winners hold a Masters title. The World Champion is the team that wins Champions.

No. Stage 2 supplies two teams per territory, while Championship Point standings supply two more per territory.
Best Value
“The 2026 numbers apply forever.”
No. The four-territory structure, 12-team Masters fields and 16-team Champions field describe 2026. They are not a permanent rule for every future season.
How to follow the 2026 qualification race
To understand a team’s position, track the season in this order:
- Identify the team’s territory: Americas, EMEA, Pacific or China.
- Check whether it qualified for Masters Santiago through the relevant regional process.
- Record its Masters results and resulting Championship Points.
- After Stage 1, check the top three playoff finishers from each territory that enter Masters London.
- Update the points standings after London and the remaining regional matches.
- At Stage 2, separate the top two playoff teams in each territory from the Championship Point standings.
- Combine those two groups to identify the 16-team Champions Shanghai field.
This method prevents a common error: treating a team’s Masters appearance, Masters placement and Champions qualification as the same thing. They are three different milestones.
What changes from season to season
The broad distinction between Masters and Champions is durable: Masters are in-season international tournaments, while Champions is the final global championship. Exact details are not permanent. Locations, dates, team counts, qualification routes and the number of events can change when Riot publishes a new season handbook.
Riot has announced that VCT 2027 will use an open, tournament-based model with new qualification paths to both Masters and Champions. That means a 2026 explanation should not be used to predict 2027 eligibility. For any later season, verify the official handbook before relying on field sizes, regional allocations or automatic qualification assumptions.
Bottom line for viewers and teams
Think of Masters as the season’s international checkpoints and Champions as the final exam. Masters Santiago and Masters London give teams global competition and Championship Points. Stage 2 and the accumulated points standings then determine who reaches Champions Shanghai. The 2026 Masters fields contain 12 teams, Champions contains 16, and only the Champions winner becomes the VALORANT World Champion.
