The VALORANT “Graphics driver crashed” message is a symptom, not proof that the graphics driver is the only cause. Start by noting exactly when the crash occurs, then check the correct GPU driver, Windows and DirectX, graphics profiles, in-game load, and ventilation—in that order. These steps can narrow down the cause, but none is a guaranteed fix for every PC.

Record what happened before troubleshooting

Note the exact error text and what VALORANT was doing when it appeared: launching, loading into a match, or running during play. Riot’s crash guidance covers several different behaviors, including a crash to desktop, a black screen at launch, the game closing immediately, and freezing. Those symptoms can have different causes.

The wording “Graphics driver crashed! Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date” is also reported in a Microsoft Q&A user post; it should be treated as an error message, not a diagnosis from Microsoft. See the post.

Identify your graphics card and update its driver

  1. Find the GPU model. Press Windows+R, enter dxdiag, and open the Display tab. Record the graphics card name and manufacturer.
  2. Get the matching driver from its manufacturer. Riot identifies NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel as common GPU manufacturers. Choose a driver that matches your specific graphics card and operating system; do not assume a package for another model or Windows version will apply.
  3. Restart and test VALORANT. Note whether the crash recurs and whether its timing or symptoms change.

Riot says graphics drivers interface with the GPU and may include fixes or optimizations. If the crash began immediately after a driver update, rolling back may be a secondary option: Driver Easy suggests rollback in that situation. This is third-party advice, not a universal fix. Verify the rollback method and suitable driver with the GPU or computer manufacturer rather than choosing an arbitrary older version.

Install available Windows updates and check DirectX

Riot notes that outdated DirectX can interfere with VALORANT’s interaction with hardware, and that Windows updates may address operating-system or DirectX issues associated with crashes. Check for Windows updates through Windows Update and use Microsoft-supported mechanisms for DirectX; the maximum DirectX version depends on the Windows version. Restart, then test the game again.

Reset custom graphics profiles

Vendor control-panel profiles can override settings made in a game. If you have custom graphics settings, restore defaults in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Catalyst Control Center as a reversible diagnostic step. Test VALORANT before changing other profile options. A custom profile is only a plausible cause until testing shows that resetting it changes the crash behavior.

Reduce graphics load and check ventilation

Try lower in-game settings

If the crash continues, use Riot’s recommended low-load starting point: set material, texture, detail, and UI quality to Low, and turn off VSync, bloom, and distortion. Change these settings for diagnosis, then test whether the crash recurs.

Look for signs of heat or restricted airflow

If the PC becomes hot while playing, check that its vents are unobstructed and that airflow around the computer is adequate. Riot recommends removing dust that blocks ventilation; compressed air may be used where the device manufacturer’s cleaning instructions permit it. Do not open the computer or clean it in a way its manufacturer advises against.

  • A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis

If heat is a concern, Riot also suggests trying a frame-rate cap below the system’s usual average frame rate. These steps reduce load or improve airflow; they do not establish that overheating caused the driver crash.

Other troubleshooting possibilities—closing background applications, trying windowed mode, stopping overclocks, changing VSync, or reinstalling Riot Vanguard—are listed by Driver Easy, but Riot’s cited article does not establish them as fixes for this exact message. Treat them as lower-priority options, changing one at a time so you can tell whether anything affects the crash.
