How the 2027 format works
Opens create the entry point
Riot is replacing a schedule centered only on a small number of headline events with a tournament-first structure. Regional Opens run throughout the season and provide an open qualification route. Local or regional teams can emerge from those events and progress toward Cups and the international Masters stages.
Kickoff starts the regional race
Kickoff is the first named stage on the 2027 calendar, but its qualifiers begin in November 2026. The four regional Kickoffs then run from January 14 through February 7, 2027. Their locations are São Paulo, Berlin, Bangkok and Hangzhou.

Cups connect regional play to global events

What open qualification means for teams and viewers
Riot says open qualification will operate throughout the season rather than being limited to a single pre-season intake. The practical route is: compete in a regional Open, advance through the relevant regional competition, then earn a place in a Cup or a later international event. Exact bracket formats, roster rules and qualification slots were not included in the location announcement, so teams should wait for each region’s competitive rulebook before planning around specific numbers.
“The biggest tour we’ve ever put together, spanning 15 cities across the season,” Riot said in its October 15, 2026 announcement.

Anna Donlon, Head of VALORANT Studios, and Leo Faria, Global Head of VALORANT Esports, described the intended pathway to Sheep Esports as one in which local champions advance to Cups, Masters and Champions, emphasizing that “anyone can win.” That makes the Opens strategically important even for organizations that are not established international names.
Scale, prize money and timing
- Riot’s 2026 announcement promises more than 50 tournaments across Opens, Kickoff, Cups, Masters and Champions.
- The announced route covers 15 host cities across four regional circuits plus the international stages.
- Sheep Esports reported more than $7 million in prize money for the 2027 season. That figure is a season-level report, not a purse specified for every individual event.
- The first competitive activity starts in November 2026 with Kickoff qualifiers, so the 2027 season effectively begins before the first listed January event.
What has not been announced yet
The location announcement identifies cities and date ranges, but it does not confirm venue names, ticket-sale dates, broadcast-rights details or partner programs. Those details should be treated as pending until Riot publishes event-specific information. The same applies to travel planning: dates are announced, while venue addresses and on-sale windows are not.
