If you specifically want another first-person Soulslike, play Valor Mortis next—or wait for its live release status and early player feedback before buying. One More Level positions it as a first-person action Soulslike built around parries, dashes, finishers, weapon choice, supernatural abilities, boss fights and interconnected exploration. It casts you as William, a soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée resurrected in a plague-corrupted alternate-history Europe.

The closest officially documented alternative is Immortals of Aveum, but it is an adjacent choice rather than a direct genre match. Electronic Arts describes it as a single-player, first-person magic shooter, with ranged spell combat and counters instead of the melee-led Soulslike structure emphasized for Valor Mortis. Choose it when fast fantasy shooting matters more than Soulslike progression and boss design.

What makes Valor Mortis a first-person Soulslike?

Valor Mortis is not simply a conventional action game viewed through a character’s eyes. One More Level’s official description calls it a first-person action Soulslike and ties its identity to deliberate combat, risk management and exploration. The player controls William, a soldier of Napoleon’s Grande Armée who returns from death while a supernatural plague ravages an alternate-history Europe.

Core combat tools

  • Parries: timing-based defenses intended to turn an enemy attack into an opening.
  • Dashes: quick evasive movement for avoiding strikes and repositioning in close quarters.
  • Finishers: attacks that capitalize on vulnerable enemies.
  • Weapons: a choice of melee and ranged equipment rather than one fixed moveset.
  • Supernatural abilities: powers that expand the combat vocabulary beyond ordinary soldiering.
  • Boss fights: encounters presented as major tests of reading attacks, movement and build choices.

The store description also frames death as a learning and progression event: each death gives William a chance to become stronger. That is the familiar Soulslike loop of exploring, losing a run, understanding what went wrong and returning with better knowledge or abilities, but the first-person camera changes how distance, attack angles and incoming threats are read.

Exploration and progression

One More Level’s September 30, 2026 gameplay overview says players can dual-wield and level up swords, firearms and magic. The same overview highlights secrets, shortcuts and sidequests, indicating that the world is meant to reward detours rather than funneling every player directly from one arena to the next. The developer’s September 17 announcement also describes a story estimated at about 20 hours. That is a developer-stated estimate, not an independently measured completion time; your route, difficulty and optional exploration can change the result.

Those systems also explain why the label matters to prospective buyers. A first-person camera alone does not make a game a Soulslike. The relevant combination here is a combat loop based on defensive timing and evasive movement, a death-linked growth cycle, build choices across weapons and powers, demanding boss encounters, and an explorable world with alternate routes. If you mainly want a linear shooter, Valor Mortis may feel more deliberate than expected; if you want a third-person Soulslike translated into a closer, more intimate viewpoint, its announced design is aimed at that space.

Release date, platforms and live availability

The official PlayStation Store listing gives the PS5 version an October 13, 2026 release date. Steam lists a PC version with the same date. Shortly before that scheduled unlock, the Steam page still displayed “not yet available” and had no user reviews. Because storefront status can change by region and time zone, check the current Steam and PlayStation Store pages immediately before purchasing rather than relying on an older announcement.

Valor Mortis console PlayStation 5 October 13, 2026 Regional store availability, edition contents and any current performance information

The listings establish the platforms and date, not a guaranteed launch-day experience in every territory. No independent performance benchmark or review score was established in the official material available for this comparison. A listing date is therefore a starting point for checking availability, not proof that the game has already unlocked everywhere.

Valor Mortis editions, prices and planned content

One More Level announced the following launch prices on September 17, 2026. They are announced prices and can vary with taxes, currency conversion, regional pricing or later promotions.

Edition Announced price Included or planned content Qualification
Standard $39.99 / €39.99 / 149.99 zł Base game Launch pricing announced by the developer; verify the amount shown in your storefront
Deluxe $59.99 / €59.99 / 199.99 zł Base game plus a major story DLC planned for the following year The DLC is a future plan, not a guarantee of delivery on a particular date

The Deluxe Edition is $20/€20/50 zł above the announced Standard price in the listed currencies. That premium only makes sense if you already want the planned story expansion and are comfortable paying for announced future content. Buyers who prefer to judge the launch campaign first can choose the Standard Edition and wait for later information, subject to whatever upgrade terms the storefront eventually offers.

The studio has also announced multiple free updates. Treat both the updates and the planned story expansion as development commitments that may change, rather than as content you can play at launch. Do not read “major story DLC planned for the following year” as a promise of a fixed release date, a specific number of missions or a particular format.

How Immortals of Aveum compares—and where it does not

Immortals of Aveum is the most defensible adjacent recommendation in the available official material. EA describes it as a single-player, first-person magic shooter set in an original fantasy world during the Everwar. Its combat uses three types of magic, ranged spell attacks and counters; EA says the game has more than 25 spells and 80 talents. Those details make it a useful alternative for a player who wants first-person fantasy action, but they do not make it a Soulslike equivalent.

Decision axis Valor Mortis Immortals of Aveum
Genre positioning Explicitly marketed by its developer as a first-person action Soulslike Described by EA as a single-player first-person magic shooter; adjacent rather than a direct Soulslike match

Progression emphasis Death provides an opportunity to grow stronger; weapons and abilities can be leveled More than 25 spells and 80 talents, according to EA’s product page

Best fit Players seeking first-person parry-and-dodge combat with Soulslike progression Players prioritizing spectacle, ranged spell combat and a self-contained fantasy campaign

There is also a practical price question, but the official listings cited here do not establish a current sale price for Immortals of Aveum. Compare the live amount on your chosen EA app, Epic, Steam, PlayStation or Xbox storefront instead of assuming that its older 2023 release makes it cheaper in every region.

Pick Valor Mortis when melee timing is the point

Choose Valor Mortis if your ideal loop is learning enemy attack patterns, deciding whether to parry or dash, exploiting a stagger or opening, and using exploration to improve your build. Its announced dual-wielding and mix of swords, firearms and magic also make it the better fit if you want several combat ranges inside a Soulslike framework.

Pick Immortals of Aveum when you want a magic shooter

Choose Immortals of Aveum if you want a first-person campaign driven by spellcasting, chained ranged attacks and counters, without requiring the game to satisfy a strict Soulslike definition. Its broader platform listing may also matter if you play on Xbox, a platform not listed for Valor Mortis in the official material.

What the first-person viewpoint changes

Third-person Soulslikes let you see your character, nearby enemies and much of the floor around your feet at once. A first-person game removes that external reference. You must infer spacing from weapon reach, audio, animation cues and the edge of the screen. That can make a successful parry feel immediate, but it can also make an attack from outside your field of view harder to diagnose.

Readability and field of view

One More Level has acknowledged perspective-specific challenges involving environmental awareness, field of view and depth perception. In practical terms, a narrow field of view can make close enemies feel faster, while a wide battlefield can hide threats behind the camera. Your preferred settings, monitor distance and motion sensitivity will affect comfort, so look for field-of-view, camera-shake and motion-blur options when you first launch the game.

Hitboxes, stagger and boss difficulty

The developer said demo feedback raised questions about combat readability, hitboxes, enemy staggering and boss difficulty. These are developer-reported feedback themes, not independent test results. They identify the areas most worth checking in launch reviews and community reports: whether a parry window is visually legible, whether weapon contact matches the animation, whether stagger states are predictable and whether bosses remain readable when the camera is close.

Platforming versus combat

First-person platforming can be less forgiving because judging a ledge requires estimating depth without seeing the character’s body. The studio specifically mentioned platforming-versus-combat questions in its discussion of demo feedback. If traversal sections are frustrating, separate movement practice from combat practice: learn jump and dash distances in a safe area, then revisit the route after your camera and sensitivity settings feel natural.

How to evaluate Valor Mortis at launch

Because the available official pages do not provide independent benchmarks or review scores, use a short verification checklist rather than assuming the announced features guarantee a particular experience.

  1. Confirm the storefront unlock: open the current Steam or PlayStation Store listing for your region and check that the product is available, not still marked “not yet available.”
  2. Check edition contents: read the purchase screen to confirm whether the Deluxe Edition’s future story DLC is described as included and whether any regional restrictions apply.
  3. Look for current technical information: verify the PC system requirements and scan launch reports for frame-rate stability, crashes, input problems and camera options on your hardware.
  4. Read feedback about the right questions: prioritize reports on parry readability, hitbox consistency, boss behavior, platforming and performance rather than relying on a single overall score.
  5. Choose your platform deliberately: buy on the system where you want to play; the official listings establish PC and PS5 for Valor Mortis, while Immortals of Aveum also has an Xbox listing.

That checklist is especially useful for a first-person Soulslike because small technical issues can affect combat interpretation. A review that praises the setting but says little about input latency or camera clarity may not answer the question a parry-focused player actually has. Look for platform-specific details and the game version tested.

What happened to the demo—and why it matters

The developer removed its demo ahead of launch after the full game received balancing, optimization and bug-fix work. It also cautioned that the demo’s Chapter I and Chapter VII were bespoke versions rather than representative final chapters. That means a demo video or old impression can answer questions about the concept and controls, but it cannot reliably establish final enemy tuning, performance or the structure of the complete campaign.

Use archived footage to learn the broad combat vocabulary—parries, dashes, weapons and supernatural abilities—not to predict exact launch balance. For current expectations, favor post-release information that identifies the platform, game version and update applied. A clip from a bespoke demo chapter should not be treated as evidence that every later area uses the same encounter design or difficulty curve.

Who should wait?

Waiting is sensible if you need a confirmed Xbox release, want a physical PS5 copy from a specific retailer, or cannot tolerate launch-period uncertainty. The official listings support PC and PS5, while the developer said a disc version was ready for printing; neither fact confirms an Xbox edition, a particular shop’s stock or identical regional packaging. Waiting also gives time for storefront reviews and technical reports to answer the questions raised by the demo feedback.

Conversely, players comfortable with announced plans and willing to verify their platform at launch can buy on the Standard Edition without committing to the $20/€20/50 zł Deluxe premium. The stated 20-hour story estimate gives a rough scope signal, but it does not promise a 20-hour total for every completion style, especially if you pursue secrets, shortcuts and sidequests.

Is Valor Mortis worth choosing over an adjacent game?

Use this priority test

  • “I want a true first-person Soulslike.” Start with Valor Mortis, subject to checking its live availability and launch condition.
  • “I want stylish first-person fantasy combat, even if it is not a Soulslike.” Consider Immortals of Aveum for its spell-focused shooting and counters.
  • “I need Xbox support.” The official platform list supports Immortals of Aveum; no Xbox version is listed for Valor Mortis in the cited announcements and store pages.
  • “I want a short, focused campaign.” Valor Mortis has a developer-stated story estimate of about 20 hours, while no comparable completion-time figure is established here for Immortals of Aveum.
  • “I want to judge before spending.” Wait until the relevant storefront shows current availability and there is platform-specific player feedback, since the pre-release Steam page had no user reviews.
  • “I want build variety within melee combat.” Favor Valor Mortis because the announced design combines dual-wielding, swords, firearms, magic and levelable abilities.
  • “I want ranged spectacle first.” Favor Immortals of Aveum because its publisher emphasizes spell-based ranged attacks, chained attacks and counters.

Physical PS5 buying guidance

The PlayStation Store lists a PS5 version, and the developer said a disc version was ready for printing. Those facts do not establish a particular retailer listing, region, stock level or edition. If you want a physical copy, verify the merchant’s exact format, publisher, language options, included DLC and return policy before ordering. Do not assume that an announced disc version means every territory has the same inventory.

For the Deluxe Edition in particular, check whether the physical product contains a disc, a download code or only a code for the planned expansion. Confirm the release date shown by the retailer, since a “ready for printing” statement is not the same as a guaranteed delivery date or local shelf availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is still unknown

The official material supports the announced premise, platforms, prices, features and developer feedback, but it does not establish an independent review consensus, measured performance figures or a larger catalog of direct first-person Soulslike peers. Games such as other first-person action titles may share a camera, parries or supernatural powers without sharing Valor Mortis’s intended Soulslike structure. Treat genre comparisons beyond Immortals of Aveum as provisional unless current gameplay evidence demonstrates the same progression, combat and exploration model.

There is likewise no confirmed basis for promising a particular frame rate, resolution, difficulty curve, boss count or expansion size. Those are sensible launch-review questions, not specifications established by the listings. The safest recommendation is therefore precise: Valor Mortis is the direct choice for the first-person Soulslike idea it advertises, while Immortals of Aveum is the fallback for first-person fantasy magic combat on more platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Valor Mortis a real first-person Soulslike?

Yes. One More Level explicitly markets it as a first-person action Soulslike, with parries, dashes, finishers, boss fights, exploration, weapon choices, supernatural abilities and death-linked character growth.

What should I play after Valor Mortis?

If you want the same first-person Soulslike direction, Valor Mortis itself is the clearest choice once its storefront availability and launch condition are confirmed. If you want adjacent first-person fantasy combat, try Immortals of Aveum, which is officially described as a magic shooter rather than a Soulslike.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Immortals of Aveum a Soulslike?

No. EA describes it as a single-player first-person magic shooter. It has ranged spell combat, chained attacks, counters, more than 25 spells and 80 talents, making it adjacent rather than a direct genre equivalent.

Is there a physical PS5 version?

The PlayStation Store lists the PS5 game, and the developer said a disc version was ready for printing. Verify the exact retailer, region, stock, edition contents and format before ordering; those statements do not confirm universal retail availability.

What should I check in launch reviews?

Look specifically for parry readability, hitbox consistency, enemy stagger behavior, boss difficulty, field-of-view and camera options, platforming comfort, performance and the platform or game version tested.

The Bottom Line

Choose Valor Mortis if you want the explicitly marketed first-person Soulslike: parries, dashes, weapons, supernatural abilities, bosses and exploration in a plague-ravaged Napoleonic alternate history. Choose Immortals of Aveum only if first-person spell combat matters more than a strict Soulslike structure. Before buying, verify the October 13, 2026 unlock, regional price, platform-specific feedback and any physical or Deluxe Edition details.
