Surviving Valor Mortis’s Crimson Plague chapter means slowing down, listening, and treating every dark doorway as a threat. The chapter moves William through a confined village at night, where mutated villagers attack with improvised tools and elite nephto-infused soldiers can punish a rushed approach. Valor Mortis is a first-person Soulslike set in a supernatural retelling of Napoleon’s history; its launch version is scheduled for October 13, 2026.
What the Crimson Plague chapter is
The official chapter announcement places Crimson Plague in narrow nighttime streets, abandoned houses, and pools of flickering torchlight. It is also the point at which William confronts the human cost of Napoleon’s supernatural conquest: occupation, civilian suffering, and a crisis of conscience. The restricted visibility and tight spaces are gameplay problems as well as story details, because enemies can emerge from angles that are difficult to read in advance.
Valor Mortis uses a first-person Soulslike combat system. You can dual-wield and develop three broad tool groups—swords, firearms, and magic—while exploring historically inspired architecture for secrets, shortcuts, and sidequests. The game’s official overview describes a roughly 20-hour story, but the time required to investigate optional content or repeatedly learn encounters will vary.

The safest opening routine
- Stop at every new sightline. Do not sprint around a blind corner. In a village built from narrow streets and interiors, stopping before an intersection gives you time to identify movement, torchlight, or an audio cue.
- Listen before committing. The developer specifically encourages careful listening. Use footsteps, hostile vocalizations, and impacts to decide whether to advance, retreat, or draw an enemy into a space you can read.
- Use light as information. Flickering torches can reveal silhouettes and also indicate where your view will be interrupted. Keep enough distance to react instead of entering a dark room at full speed.
- Pull enemies into known ground. If a target notices you near a doorway or alley, back toward an area you have already checked. This reduces the chance of another enemy joining the fight from an unseen angle.
- Recheck the route after a fight. Once an encounter ends, look for a side path, house entrance, shortcut, or quest interaction before moving on. Exploration is part of progression, not merely decoration.
How to read Crimson Plague enemies
| Threat | What is established | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Mutated villagers | They use everyday tools, torches, and farm equipment. Their attacks are unpredictable and almost feral. | Never assume a civilian-looking figure is harmless. Watch the approach, leave room to retreat, and avoid beginning an attack from a blind angle. |
| The Relentless | These nephto-infused soldiers are faster, more aggressive, and more dangerous than ordinary foes. They carry massive greatswords. | Recognize them early and avoid fighting while surrounded. Their identity signals a higher-risk encounter, not an ordinary villager skirmish. |
| Sergeant Gaspard “Cannonhand” Dubois | His right arm has become a cannon, and nephtoglobin tissue covers his upper body. | Treat the visual mutation and cannon arm as immediate threat information. Do not presume a generic melee response will apply. |
The available official material does not publish damage values, attack strings, boss phases, or exact counters. Any guide claiming a guaranteed timing, hidden weakness, or fixed sequence for these enemies needs confirmation from verified gameplay footage or a primary guide.

Choosing weapons and abilities without overcommitting
Swords
Swords are the close-range option. They give you immediate pressure but require you to stand near unpredictable villagers and heavy elite weapons. Use them when you have a clear escape route and enough space to read an enemy’s movement.
Firearms
Firearms let you create distance or punish an opening without standing directly beside a target. In cramped streets, however, a ranged option does not remove the need to check corners; firing can attract attention or leave you poorly positioned for the next threat.
Rank #2
Magic
Magic adds utility and damage variety to the loadout. The official overview confirms magic leveling but does not specify spells, resource costs, or status effects, so select abilities according to what your current playthrough actually makes available rather than following an unverified “best build.”
Dual-wielding
Dual-wielding allows combinations of the three weapon categories. A sensible beginner framework is to pair a reliable close-range answer with a tool that helps you disengage or test an enemy from farther away. The right pairing depends on your reactions and the options you have unlocked; no optimal skill path has been published.

Parries, movement, and first-person spacing
First-person combat changes how you judge distance. Keep the enemy visible rather than circling so quickly that the camera loses the attack origin. Practice defensive timing in low-risk encounters, but do not assume a universal parry window: the official announcements establish the combat system, not its frame data or stamina costs.
- Defensive timing: choose a parry attempt when you can clearly see the attack begin and have a recovery plan if it fails.
- Mobility: preserve an exit lane in alleys and rooms; movement is less useful if a wall or doorway traps you.
- Spacing: against greatsword users, prioritize recognition and room to retreat over trading hits.
- Camera control: turn deliberately through doorways and use sound to compensate when the view is obstructed.
Exploration, shortcuts, and sidequests
Search abandoned houses and connecting streets after securing an area. Secrets and shortcuts can change how safely you return to a difficult section, while sidequests add objectives beyond the main route. Exploration carries risk because a newly opened path may expose another encounter, so establish a fallback position before investigating.

The developer has also explained that the demo’s Chapter I and Chapter VII levels were bespoke versions recreated for Steam Next Fest. Their layouts should not automatically be treated as a complete representation of every chapter in the launch game.

Valor Mortis is a reasonable fit if you want a focused Soulslike with first-person combat, historical supernatural fiction, and build choices spanning melee, firearms, and magic. The Crimson Plague material also suggests a deliberate horror pace built around observation rather than constant aggression. Wait for verified gameplay or a refund-eligible purchase if your decision depends on exact parry behavior, performance, boss design, or a particular build, because those details are not documented in the official announcements available for launch.
