If the Cave Grotto Key is missing in Valor Mortis, finish rescuing Louis, return to the Abandoned Church, and speak with James until the conversation is exhausted. That conversation is the documented handoff for the key. It opens the door in the cliffs across the grapple point and is required to continue Chapter 4.
Where the Cave Grotto Key comes from
The Cave Grotto Key is not a random pickup in the grotto or a reward from the cliff door. The documented trigger is a quest-state sequence:
- Complete the rescue of Louis.
- Return to the Abandoned Church.
- Speak with James there after the rescue.
- Receive the Cave Grotto Key from that conversation.
Once obtained, the key opens the door in the cliffs across the grapple point. That doorway is part of the Chapter 4 route, so trying to force the door before the James conversation will not solve the progression block.
First check: is Louis’s rescue actually complete?
James’s handoff is conditional. Reaching the church or speaking to James before the rescue is finished does not establish the trigger. Recheck the Louis objective in the game’s current quest or chapter state and make sure the rescue sequence itself has concluded, rather than assuming that reaching Louis’s location was enough.

Use the state the game gives you as your reference: an objective that still tells you to rescue Louis, an incomplete rescue event, or a return to the church before the rescue has ended means the key conversation is not ready yet. Do not spend time searching the cave for a loose key while that prerequisite remains unfinished.
Safe fix sequence when James does not give the key
Work through these steps in order. The first two reproduce the documented trigger. The later steps are conservative recovery checks that can refresh a stalled quest state, but they are not confirmed Cave Grotto Key-specific fixes.
1. Finish the Louis rescue, then wait for the sequence to settle
Complete every part of the rescue that the game presents before leaving the area. If a transition, objective update, or short event is still in progress, let it finish. The key condition is the completed rescue, not merely having interacted with Louis.

After the rescue is clearly complete, travel back to the Abandoned Church. If you returned there earlier, leave and come back after the rescue rather than relying on the earlier visit.
2. Speak with James again at the Abandoned Church
Approach James and start the conversation. Continue through all available dialogue instead of stopping after the first line or walking away as soon as the interaction begins. The documented reward is tied to speaking with James after Louis’s rescue, so a partial interaction can make it difficult to tell whether the trigger has fired.

Watch for the key to be awarded during or immediately after the conversation. Then check the game’s inventory or key-item display and return to the cliff door across the grapple point. If James gives different dialogue but no key appears, note the exact wording; that information is useful for diagnosing whether the rescue state has advanced.
3. Leave the church area and return through the latest lantern or checkpoint
If the conversation completes without the key, use the most recent lantern or checkpoint to leave the immediate church area, then come back and talk to James once more. This is a low-risk way to reload the surrounding area and test the trigger again. It is general recovery advice, not a published guarantee for this item.
When you return, repeat the full James conversation. A useful diagnostic is whether his dialogue is unchanged, advances to a new line, or ends without offering an interaction. Record that result before trying the next step.
4. Reload the latest checkpoint
Use the game’s normal reload-checkpoint option, then repeat the route: confirm the Louis rescue state, return to the Abandoned Church, and exhaust James’s dialogue. Reloading can clear a temporary progression or loading state without altering the save’s intended sequence.
Do not assume a reload has worked merely because the church loaded again. The meaningful test is whether James’s post-rescue conversation now awards the key and whether the key appears in the inventory.

5. Restart the game and retry the conversation
If a checkpoint reload changes nothing, close and restart the game using its normal exit procedure. Load the latest save, verify the Louis rescue state, and repeat the James interaction. This is another general recovery measure; no published source confirms that a full restart specifically fixes the Cave Grotto Key.

A restart is preferable to editing save data because it preserves the game’s normal progression logic. Keep the original save available while testing so that you can return to the same state if the result is unchanged.
6. Install available game updates
Make sure Valor Mortis is fully updated for your platform before repeating the sequence. Current guides describe patches that addressed several demo progression and loading problems, but they do not identify a patch specifically for the Cave Grotto Key. Updating is therefore a sensible prerequisite, not proof that the item will appear.
After updating, load the latest checkpoint and perform the complete test again. If the game version changed, include that version in any support report.
7. Contact official support if the trigger still fails
If Louis is marked rescued, James has been spoken to repeatedly, the area has been reloaded, and the key is still absent, use the game’s official support channel. There is no published key-specific save edit, console command, or developer-confirmed workaround to substitute for support.

Provide enough information for the issue to be reproduced:
- Your platform and edition of the game.
- The exact game version after updating.
- The chapter you are in, including that the blocked route is in Chapter 4.
- Whether the game shows Louis as rescued.
- What James says after the rescue.
- Whether you left and re-entered through a lantern or checkpoint.
- Whether a checkpoint reload and a full restart changed the behavior.
- A screenshot or short video showing the objective state, James’s interaction, and the missing key if the support form allows attachments.
How to diagnose the result of each retry
The conversation itself is the most useful diagnostic because it shows whether the game recognizes the rescue state. Use the following observations to decide what to do next:

Can the Cave Grotto Key be missed permanently?
PowerPyx’s broader collectible guidance says key items are not missable and that earlier areas remain accessible after the final boss. That means a player who has moved past the church should be able to revisit the area rather than abandoning the save solely because the key was not collected at the first opportunity.
This does not remove the need to complete Louis’s rescue and speak with James. It means the intended recovery path is to return to the Abandoned Church and activate the handoff, even later in the playthrough. Revisit the church before considering destructive measures such as deleting the save.

Do not search the cave for a random spawn
The documented source is James at the Abandoned Church after Louis’s rescue. Searching every corner of the grotto cannot replace that quest trigger and can waste time if the prerequisite is incomplete.

Do not rely on an incomplete James interaction
Approaching James, triggering one line, and leaving does not provide a reliable test. Exhaust the conversation so that you know the post-rescue dialogue has been fully processed.
Do not use unsupported save edits or commands
No searched source provides a developer-confirmed console command, save edit, or item-spawn procedure for this key. Unverified edits can damage a save or create a state that official support cannot reproduce. Keep the normal save and use checkpoint reloads, restarts, and the official support route instead.

Using the key to continue Chapter 4
After James awards the Cave Grotto Key, the intended destination is the door in the cliffs across the grapple point. The key is a progression item, not a collectible that unlocks an unrelated side location. If the door does not open, first verify that the key is actually listed in the game’s key-item inventory and that you are at the cliff door reached across the grapple point.
If the item is listed but the route still appears blocked, avoid repeating the entire rescue immediately. Check the door location, reload the latest checkpoint once, and then report the exact combination of an obtained key and a non-opening door to support. That is a different symptom from James never awarding the item.

Bottom line for a missing Cave Grotto Key
The reliable progression route is Louis’s completed rescue followed by a full conversation with James in the Abandoned Church. That is where the key is documented as being awarded, and it opens the Chapter 4 door in the cliffs across the grapple point. If the handoff still fails, revisit the church after a checkpoint reload or restart, update the game, and send support a precise state report; there is no confirmed item-specific command or save edit.
