Use the Sabre while you learn, keep enough Endurance for one defensive action, and treat parrying as your main way to break posture. Finish every attack before attempting a parry, because Valor Mortis does not let you cancel an attack animation into one. When timing is uncertain, block and counter immediately; when an attack bypasses guarding, dodge instead. This rhythm turns difficult encounters from endurance tests into repeatable reads.

This guide explains the first-person Soulslike combat system, the Sabre and Rapier trade-off, firearm weak points, Transmutations, and a route-planning method for hard quests. It also distinguishes confirmed launch information from details that have not been published, such as a precise parry-window duration.

What makes Valor Mortis combat different

Valor Mortis combines dual-wielded swords, firearms, magic and close-range defense in a first-person Soulslike. The central fight is not simply about reducing an enemy health bar. Enemies have posture that you pressure with attacks and parries; once that posture breaks, a heavy attack or powerful finisher can convert the opening into major damage.

First-person presentation makes camera discipline part of defense. You must read a shoulder movement, weapon lift or projectile cue while keeping the enemy visible, then choose among three answers: parry for posture pressure, block for a safer recovery opportunity, or dodge when the attack defeats a guard. Your resource bar determines whether that decision remains available.

Learn the two resources before attempting hard quests

Resource What it pays for What happens when you misuse it Beginner rule
Endurance Attacks, blocks and dodges When it is exhausted, you lose the ability to attack or defend until it returns. Never spend the entire bar on a long attack sequence; reserve enough for the next defensive response.
Nephtoglobin Earned through combat and spent on Transmutations. Unplanned spending can leave a build without the effect that supports its intended playstyle. Decide whether you are building around ranged counters, weak-point burst or aggressive melee sustain before committing it.

Endurance is a moment-to-moment resource. A successful hit is not automatically good if it leaves you unable to parry the enemy’s reply. Nephtoglobin is a longer-term build resource: gather it by fighting, then spend it on Transmutations that change how you create openings or survive them.

How to parry reliably

1. Start with a readable attack

Stand at a distance where the enemy’s weapon and upper body remain in view. Watch the wind-up rather than the weapon’s final position. Each enemy family has recognizable attack strings; learn one string at a time instead of trying to memorize an entire area.

2. Commit to your current swing

Do not press attack speculatively and plan to cancel into defense. Connor Bridgeman, Director of Marketing at Lyrical Games, stated on October 13, 2026: "You can’t cancel an attack animation into a parry, so never start a swing you can’t finish." Let the animation end, or accept that you have chosen offense and must survive the enemy’s response another way.

3. Parry during the attack string

Use the parry input as the enemy’s strike is entering its active motion. The combat guidance recommends parrying inside an attack string rather than waiting for its final hit. A successful parry deals posture damage and can create a critical or counter window. The exact duration of that window has not been published, so build your timing from the enemy’s visual cue instead of a presumed number of frames.

4. Convert the posture break

Continue landing hits and parries until the enemy’s posture breaks. Immediately follow with a heavy attack or powerful finisher while the opening is available. Do not waste the window on a low-commitment poke unless your Endurance is too low to perform the conversion safely.

5. Reset before the next exchange

After the counter, create enough space to refill Endurance and reacquire the enemy in the camera. Greedy follow-up attacks are a common cause of a successful parry becoming a defeat. The goal is a repeatable cycle: read, commit, parry, break posture, finish, reset.

Block, dodge or parry?

Situation Best first answer Reason Main risk
You recognize the wind-up and can meet the strike Parry Builds posture and can create a critical or counter opportunity. A mistimed input can leave you exposed, especially if you began another attack too late.
You are unsure of the timing but the attack can be guarded Block Reduces immediate danger and sets up a health-recovery counter. Blocking costs Endurance and still causes health loss that must be recovered through the counter.
The attack bypasses guarding Dodge Moves you out of the attack’s path when a guard is not a valid answer. A mistimed dodge spends Endurance without creating distance, leaving no defense for the follow-up.
The enemy is exposed after posture breaks Heavy attack or finisher Converts posture damage into a high-value damage window. Starting from too far away or with an empty Endurance bar can waste the opening.

Blocking is not merely a weaker parry. It has a specific recovery payoff. The official launch guidance says, "Counter-attacking right after a block restores the health you lost while blocking." Make that counter immediate; delaying it turns a temporary health trade into permanent damage. Dodge attacks identified as guard-piercing rather than repeatedly testing whether a block will work.

Choose the Sabre before the Rapier

The Sabre is the most forgiving learning weapon because it retains all three defensive answers: block, dodge and parry. You can practice timing while still having a fallback when an attack is unfamiliar. The Rapier removes blocking, demands a well-timed parry for defense, and offers weak-point advantages without spending firearm ammunition. That is a defensive and resource trade-off, not a simple damage ranking.

Comparison axis Sabre Rapier
Block Available Not available
Dodge Available Available
Parry Available Available and central to survival
Posture pressure Can combine safe blocks with parries and attacks Strongly rewards precise parries and weak-point play
Firearm-ammo dependence Can use firearms when useful; not required for the weapon’s weak-point role Can damage weak points without spending firearm ammunition
Camera and timing burden Lower while learning because a missed parry can become a block or dodge Higher because a missed parry cannot be replaced by a block
Who should start here Most new players and anyone still learning enemy strings Players already comfortable reading attacks and accepting a narrower defense

Switch to the Rapier when you deliberately want its weak-point access and are willing to give up blocking. Do not select it merely because a guide calls it faster or more damaging; its real cost is reduced defensive coverage.

A beginner combat loop that works across enemy families

  1. Observe. Enter with a partial Endurance bar and identify the enemy’s first wind-up. Do not open with a full sequence of attacks.
  2. Probe once. Use a controlled strike, then stop. Your purpose is to make the enemy reveal its response, not to empty your resource bar.
  3. Finish the animation. If you have attacked, wait until that attack is complete. You cannot cancel it into a parry.
  4. Parry inside the string. Meet the recognizable strike, build posture and look for the counter window.
  5. Block when uncertain. If the cue is unclear but the attack is guardable, block and counter immediately to recover the health lost while blocking.
  6. Dodge guard-piercing attacks. Do not spend repeated blocks on an attack that the combat rules identify as bypassing a guard.
  7. Break and finish. Once posture breaks, use the heavy attack or finisher that your remaining Endurance can support.
  8. Reset. Reposition, let Endurance return, and keep the enemy in view before beginning another exchange.

This sequence deliberately leaves resources unused. That reserve is what lets you answer an unexpected second enemy or a delayed follow-up instead of becoming helpless at the end of your own combo.

Practice habits that shorten the learning curve

Learn one string per enemy family

Choose a common enemy and watch its first attack without attacking back. Identify the earliest reliable cue, then parry that hit repeatedly. Once the timing is stable, add the next hit in the string. Parrying during the string is usually more useful than waiting for the final blow, because it breaks the enemy’s posture before the sequence is complete.

Use the available assists

Target Lock can reduce camera-management work when a single enemy is pressuring you. Instant Restart is useful when you are repeating a short practice attempt or retrying a difficult encounter. Turn either option off later if it interferes with your preferred camera control; the purpose is to improve your reading, not to impose a single control style.

Train your Endurance discipline

Count your own actions rather than chasing an arbitrary combo length. End an attack sequence while you still have enough Endurance for a block or dodge. If you repeatedly die after a good opening, the problem is often not parry timing but spending the reserve needed for the enemy’s response.

Use firearms and weak points deliberately

Firearm ammunition is scarce, so shots should create a specific advantage rather than serve as routine damage. Look for glowing weak points. Explosive barrels can damage groups or alter an encounter’s opening, while red-orange nodes can reveal blocked paths. Save ammunition for a weak point that interrupts a dangerous enemy, exposes a route, or lets you finish a target before it summons additional pressure.

Fire Transmutation provides another controlled opening: set an enemy alight, then attack while it is exposed. Treat the effect as a setup for a safe conversion, not a reason to stand still and spend all your Endurance. If the target recovers before you can reach it, reset rather than forcing a trade.

Plan difficult quests as routes, not races

Compare exposure before choosing a path

The shortest route is not automatically the safest. Valor Mortis uses interconnected levels with shortcuts, alternate paths and later ability gates. Before committing to a difficult quest, compare four factors:

  • Combat exposure: How many enemies must be fought in sequence, and can any be isolated?
  • Shortcut value: Does opening this route create a reliable return path after a defeat?
  • Optional reward: Does the detour contain an Amber, story record, journal page, echo or miniboss?
  • Ability timing: Is the apparent barrier intended to be revisited after a later ability?

A route with one extra fight but a permanent shortcut can be safer than a direct corridor that forces the whole level to be repeated. Mark the location mentally, open the shortcut when possible, and return after gaining the ability that changes the area.

Search villages for alternate approaches

Villages contain shortcuts and alternate paths. Check side streets, upper routes and doors that appear to lead away from the quest marker. These paths can change the angle of an engagement, bypass a group, or connect you to a return route. Do not assume a locked or blocked entrance is permanently irrelevant; later abilities can reopen earlier areas.

Decide when to leave an optional fight

Optional areas hide Ambers, story records and minibosses, so skipping everything costs discovery and build options. However, an optional miniboss should be treated as a separate objective. Open the nearby shortcut first, spend or bank resources as appropriate, then attempt the fight with a known escape route. If the encounter repeatedly consumes all your Endurance before its second phase of attacks, leave and return after a later ability or a better-matched Transmutation.

Use checkpoints as learning stations

When Instant Restart is enabled, repeat the first exchange until you can identify the enemy’s string. When it is not, use each return trip to test one variable: parry the first hit, block it and counter, or dodge it if it pierces guarding. Changing one response at a time tells you which defense the attack actually requires.

Amber and Transmutation choices

The launch guidance gives three useful examples. They represent distinct playstyles rather than a universal ranking:

Amber Effect Best fit Trade-off to consider
Marksman’s Bane Allows bullet parries and returns a pistol round after a successful bullet parry. Players who enjoy ranged counterplay and can reliably read projectile timing. Its value depends on successful bullet parries; missed timing does not provide the same ammunition loop.
Volatile End Makes weak-point shots explode for additional damage. Players who conserve ammunition for glowing weak points and clustered targets. It rewards deliberate shot placement rather than frequent unfocused firing.
Butcher’s Carnage Restores health through melee strikes. Aggressive Sabre users who consistently reach enemies and maintain pressure. It removes Ferrofluid Flask healing, so missed melee opportunities are more costly.

Spend Nephtoglobin on the Transmutation that supports the way you already create openings. Marksman’s Bane suits a player practicing projectile reads; Volatile End suits a weak-point route; Butcher’s Carnage suits sustained melee pressure and requires accepting the loss of Flask healing. There is no published numeric upgrade-cost or scaling table in the launch guidance, so do not plan around invented thresholds.

Early-upgrade priorities without wasting resources

During the opening hours, prioritize flexibility over a narrowly optimized damage label. Keep the Sabre equipped until your parries remain reliable under pressure. Preserve enough Endurance capacity, or enough recovery options, to perform a defense after an attack. When choosing between Transmutations, ask which one solves the failure that is actually killing you:

  • If enemies overwhelm you before you can reach them, a weak-point or ranged-counter approach may create safer openings.
  • If you consistently hit glowing weak points and have ammunition discipline, an explosive weak-point effect can turn one accurate shot into area pressure.
  • If you win by staying in melee and can replace Flask healing with successful strikes, melee sustain may fit; otherwise its healing restriction can undermine your safety.

Do not spend Nephtoglobin simply because you have reached a purchase screen. Bank it until you know whether your deaths come from unreadable attacks, depleted Endurance, lack of ranged control or insufficient recovery. A targeted effect is worth more than an upgrade chosen without a problem to solve.

Common failure modes and fixes

What you see Likely cause Fix
You press parry but are hit during your swing. You attempted to cancel an attack animation. Finish the attack, then parry the next readable hit. Start only swings you can afford to complete.
Blocking keeps you alive briefly but your health never returns. You did not counter immediately after the block. Make the counter-attack part of the block response; it restores the health lost while blocking.
Your guard fails against a particular attack. The attack bypasses guarding. Dodge that cue instead of repeating the block.
You parry once, then cannot defend the follow-up. The opening attack consumed the full Endurance bar. Stop one hit earlier and reserve Endurance for the next parry, block or dodge.
You die while trying to finish a staggered enemy. You began a heavy attack or finisher without enough distance or Endurance. Confirm the opening, use the conversion you can complete safely, then reset.
Camera movement hides the incoming strike. You are manually managing distance and target orientation at the same time. Try Target Lock while learning the enemy’s string; release it if it causes unwanted camera behavior.
A difficult quest feels harder on every attempt. You are repeating the shortest route without opening shortcuts or checking alternate paths. Explore villages and side routes, mark ability-gated areas, and return after unlocking a safer connection.

What is confirmed about the launch version
