Short answer: Valkey is broadly compatible with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier at the protocol, client, configuration, scripting, and core persistence layers, but compatibility is version-specific. Redis CE 7.4 and later data files are not compatible with Valkey. Neither project is proven universally faster: published figures come from each project’s own version-to-version tests, so your workload, topology, and required features should decide the migration.

Valkey is a sensible candidate when its supported commands and modules meet your needs and you prefer its BSD-3-Clause governance model. Redis may remain the better fit when a particular Redis feature, integration, managed offering, or support arrangement is decisive. Treat this as an engineering selection and migration exercise, not a brand-wide speed contest.

What Valkey and Redis are being compared

Valkey began as a fork of Redis OSS 7.2.4. That shared history explains why a normal RESP client, common data structures, and many Redis operational habits can work with Valkey. It does not make every current release, module, configuration directive, persistence file, or hosted service interchangeable.

The version boundary matters. Valkey’s migration documentation describes compatibility with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier, including RESP2 and RESP3, existing Redis client libraries, Redis-style configuration, CLI interoperability, Lua scripts that use the redis namespace, and RedisModule API compatibility. Valkey can read and write RDB and AOF formats compatible with Redis OSS 7.2. Redis CE 7.4 and later can produce data files that Valkey cannot read.

Redis and Valkey are now separate projects with separate roadmaps. As Valkey maintainer Kyle Davis put it in a March 2026 comparison article, “From this point forward, Redis and Valkey are two different pieces of software.” That is the useful mental model: a large compatibility base, followed by deliberate divergence.

Compatibility: what usually carries over and what does not

Compatibility area What the documented boundary supports What you must verify
Wire protocol RESP2 and RESP3 Client behavior for the exact commands and response shapes your application uses
Client libraries Existing Redis client libraries can connect without code changes in the supported range Library version, connection options, cluster behavior, and retry or timeout assumptions
Configuration Redis-style configuration directives Directives introduced after Redis OSS 7.2 and settings supplied by your deployment tooling
Lua Scripts using the redis namespace Script behavior, command permissions, deterministic execution, and any newer scripting features
Modules RedisModule API compatibility is documented Each module’s Valkey build, version, license, persistence behavior, and cluster support
Persistence files Redis OSS 7.2-compatible RDB and AOF files Source distribution and version; Redis CE 7.4-plus files are an explicit incompatibility

Think of this as wire and application compatibility rather than a blanket guarantee. A cache that uses GET, SET, expiration, and a standard client may move with little code work. An installation that depends on a newer command, a module, custom configuration, or a particular managed-service feature needs a separate audit.

Commands, data types, and responses

Inventory commands by observing production traffic, reviewing application code, and checking scripts and background workers. Include administrative commands used by health checks and deployment jobs, not only business requests. A client can connect successfully while a less common command fails, returns a different response shape, or has different availability in a cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Modules and extensions

Modules are a common source of false confidence. API compatibility does not mean that every Redis module is packaged, maintained, licensed, or tested for Valkey. Record the exact module name and release, whether it supplies JSON, probabilistic structures, vector search, LDAP, or another capability, and how its data is persisted. Valkey’s 2025 year-end materials describe an evolving official set that includes JSON, Bloom, vector-search, and LDAP modules; verify the specific build before scheduling a cutover.

Persistence and data files

Do not copy an RDB or AOF file until you have confirmed the source is Redis OSS 7.2 or earlier and the target Valkey release supports that format. The Redis CE 7.4-and-later warning is a hard boundary in the migration documentation. Keep the original backup untouched so a failed import does not destroy your rollback option.

Choose a migration method before you schedule downtime

Valkey’s migration guidance describes three practical approaches. The right choice depends on write volume, acceptable downtime, data size, and how confidently you can verify the application after the switch.

Snapshot copy

A snapshot is the simplest path for a small or quiescent deployment. Stop or isolate writes, create and retain a backup, move the compatible RDB or AOF data, start Valkey, and point clients at it. The method is easy to reason about but requires downtime while Redis stops and Valkey loads the data. Heavy writes create a risk of losing changes if active connections are not disconnected first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replication and cutover

Replication can reduce the outage window. Provision Valkey, configure it to replicate from Redis, wait for synchronization, then pause writes, confirm the replica is caught up, redirect clients, detach the replica, and make it the primary. This is not an automatic zero-downtime guarantee: synchronization lag, blocked writes, failed authentication, network interruptions, and an incomplete cutover can still cause loss or split-brain behavior.

Selected-key migration

Moving only selected keys works when you can partition the dataset or rebuild disposable cache entries. Define the keyspace explicitly, account for time-to-live values, and decide what happens to keys written during the move. This method can limit the blast radius but increases application complexity and the chance of omitting a dependency.

A migration checklist

  1. Identify the exact Redis distribution and version, including whether it is Redis OSS or Redis CE.
  2. Inventory commands, data types, Lua scripts, modules, configuration directives, persistence mode, replication, and cluster topology.
  3. Confirm that the source RDB or AOF format is within Valkey’s documented compatibility range.
  4. Build a test Valkey environment with the same client libraries, authentication, network policy, persistence settings, and topology you plan to use in production.
  5. Take a backup and test that you can restore it; retain the original until the rollback window closes.
  6. Select snapshot, replication, or selected-key migration according to your downtime and write-loss budget.
  7. Before cutover, define checks for key counts, representative values, expiration times, module data, scripts, error rates, latency, and application workflows.
  8. After cutover, verify reads and writes from every application tier, monitor replication or persistence health, and keep the old primary isolated but recoverable until the result is accepted.

Performance: published numbers are not a head-to-head verdict

No independent, controlled Valkey-versus-current-Redis benchmark establishes a universal winner. Redis publishes comparisons between its own releases; Valkey publishes results for its own releases and configurations. Hardware, client count, pipelining, command mix, dataset shape, persistence, and cluster topology can change the outcome.

Redis 8.6, February 10, 2026 More than 5× the throughput of Redis 7.2; 3.5 million operations per second with pipeline size 16 Single-node caching test on an AWS m8g.24xlarge ARM Graviton4 instance, 16 cores, 11 I/O threads, 2,000 clients, pipeline size 1 for the main result, 1:10 SET:GET mix, 1 million keys, and 1 KB string values
Redis 8.6 versus 8.4 Up to 35% lower sorted-set latency, 15% lower short-string GET latency, 11% lower list latency, 7% lower hash latency; up to 16.7% lower hash memory use, 30.5% lower sorted-set memory use, and 58% faster vector-set queries Redis-reported release comparison; conditions vary by measurement
Redis 8.8 versus 8.6, June 2, 2026 Up to 68% higher pipelined MGET throughput with I/O threads, 50% for pipelined single-thread MGET, 83% for XREADGROUP with COUNT 100, 74% for several sorted-set operations, 40% for scan-family commands, and 60% faster persistence and full synchronization Same-build tests across recent Intel, AMD, and ARM AWS hardware using Redis’s OSS SPEC
Valkey 9.0, October 2025 Up to 40% higher throughput from pipeline memory prefetch, up to 20% from zero-copy responses, and 25% lower latency with Multipath TCP Valkey-reported release improvements; benefits depend on configuration and workload
Valkey 9.0 cluster result More than 1 billion requests per second Valkey project report for a 2,000-node cluster; not comparable to a single-node measurement

These figures are useful for identifying optimizations to investigate, not for predicting your bill or latency. A single-node Redis result cannot be ranked directly against a 2,000-node Valkey result. Even two single-node tests can differ because one uses pipelining, I/O threads, a different value size, or a different command ratio.

Build a fair benchmark

Run the same client workload against both engines. Hold hardware, operating-system image, software build settings, dataset size and value distribution, command mix, client count, pipeline depth, persistence policy, network path, and cluster topology constant. Warm the dataset, measure multiple intervals, and report throughput, median latency, tail latency, memory, CPU, persistence time, synchronization time, and recovery behavior.

Valkey’s benchmark guidance describes valkey-benchmark as a way to answer “how does my server perform under load”, not “how fast is Valkey” in the abstract. Use production-shaped traces where possible; synthetic SET and GET loops can miss hot-key contention, expiration storms, streams, sorted sets, scripts, and failover effects.

Interpret results by workload

  • For a read-heavy cache, compare GET or MGET latency, pipeline depth, client concurrency, and eviction behavior.
  • For queues and streams, include blocking reads, consumer groups, pending entries, and recovery after a node failure.
  • For sorted sets, hashes, vector operations, or scripts, benchmark those commands directly rather than extrapolating from simple strings.
  • For durable workloads, measure AOF or snapshot overhead, restart time, full synchronization, and the amount of data that can be lost under your configured policy.

Features, modules, and ecosystem differences

Redis’s own comparison materials present Redis Open Source 8 as including core data structures and search capabilities, alongside a broad client, framework, operations, and AI-integration ecosystem. Availability can depend on the edition, license, and whether you are discussing Redis Open Source or a commercial Redis service, so confirm the exact distribution in a procurement or architecture decision.

Valkey has an active but distinct ecosystem: its project repository and documentation, official module work, managed-service listings, and Valkey GLIDE client contributions. Its 2025 review lists JSON, Bloom, vector-search, and LDAP modules. That is evidence of momentum, not proof that every integration you use on Redis is ready on Valkey.

Evaluate the ecosystem you actually need

  • Clients: verify your language client, pooling behavior, RESP mode, cluster support, TLS, authentication, and observability hooks.
  • Frameworks: check connection factories, cache abstractions, queue libraries, ORM integrations, and health checks against the target release.
  • Modules: verify package availability, persistence compatibility, replication, cluster support, upgrade policy, and maintainership.
  • Operations: confirm metrics exporters, dashboards, backup tools, failover automation, infrastructure-as-code providers, and incident runbooks.
  • Support: decide whether your team can operate the engine itself or needs a provider with a contractual support channel.

Governance and licensing are selection criteria

Valkey’s repository identifies the project as BSD-3-Clause licensed. Redis’s comparison materials describe Redis 8 as available under AGPLv3, RSALv2, or SSPLv1. The applicable terms depend on the exact release, distribution, and how you offer the software; have counsel review obligations instead of treating a short license label as legal advice.

Governance affects more than legal paperwork. Consider who controls the roadmap, how security fixes are issued, whether your organization can redistribute modified builds, and how quickly you can obtain support. A permissive license may simplify internal distribution, while a commercial service may provide operational features or support that your team would otherwise have to build.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Managed hosting and operational support

Managed Valkey is available in some provider ecosystems, including AWS documentation describing Valkey compatibility differences. Service features and version paths vary by provider and region. Before committing, verify the exact engine version, import and migration path, backup and restore behavior, maintenance policy, scaling limits, failover model, module availability, observability, network controls, and commercial terms in the provider’s current documentation.

Managed Redis offerings similarly differ from self-managed Redis Open Source. A feature shown in a product comparison may require a particular edition or service tier. Record the service name and engine version in your architecture decision so a later “Redis versus Valkey” upgrade does not silently change the product being evaluated.

Importing a newer Redis data file

Redis CE 7.4-and-later files are explicitly outside Valkey’s documented compatibility range. Export through a supported method or use replication only after confirming the versions and procedure.

Assuming a client connection proves migration success

Connection tests cover authentication and protocol negotiation, not every command path. Replay representative workflows, including expiration, transactions, scripts, streams, module operations, and failure handling.

Using vendor benchmarks as a ranking

Keep each number tied to its publisher, release comparator, hardware, and workload. Re-run both engines with identical conditions before making a capacity or cost decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring writes during a snapshot

Disconnect or quiesce writers before taking the final snapshot. If that outage is unacceptable, evaluate replication and define a cutover checkpoint with a measured synchronization state.

Forgetting rollback

Keep the old primary’s backup, configuration, and endpoint available until application checks and monitoring show a stable cutover. Document how to reverse DNS, service discovery, credentials, and write routing without creating two active primaries.

A practical decision framework

Choose Valkey when Choose Redis when
Your source is within the Redis OSS 7.2 compatibility range, required commands and modules are verified, and BSD-3-Clause governance fits your policy A specifically required Redis feature, integration, module, commercial service, or support arrangement is not available or not equivalent on Valkey
You can test migration, benchmark the production-shaped workload, and operate or source support for the target deployment Your organization already depends on a Redis edition or hosted capability whose operational behavior is difficult to reproduce elsewhere
The team values an independent project roadmap and is comfortable validating an evolving module ecosystem The team prioritizes the established integrations and product capabilities documented for the selected Redis edition or service

For either choice, write down the exact release, edition, modules, client versions, topology, persistence policy, and support model. “Redis” and “Valkey” alone are not precise enough labels for a production design.

Bottom line

Valkey is compatible enough with Redis OSS 7.2 and earlier to make many migrations practical, especially for conventional cache and data-structure workloads. It is not a drop-in replacement for every newer Redis release or data file. Performance claims currently show strong improvements within each project’s own releases, but they do not establish a cross-project winner. The defensible path is to audit features and persistence, choose a migration method that matches your downtime budget, and benchmark both engines on identical hardware and production-shaped traffic before switching.
