Choose Valheim for unpredictable, procedural exploration; choose Enshrouded for the strongest building and action-RPG movement; choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds for RuneScape-style skills, magic and the most demanding default survival routine. All three are in their 1.0 era, but they serve distinctly different kinds of survival players.
The quick decision
These games overlap in crafting, combat, base construction and cooperative play, yet their priorities differ. Valheim makes every expedition feel like a voyage into an unknown world. Enshrouded treats survival as the foundation for a highly flexible voxel-building and action-RPG sandbox. Dragonwilds connects survival to RuneScape skills, recipes, potions and practical magic in a fixed continent.
The recommendations below are playstyle guidance, not universal scores. The mechanics comparison follows PC Gamer’s comparison published 15 October 2026; release dates and PC requirements come from the games’ Steam listings. Store metadata, review totals and platform availability can change.

Choose Valheim for exploration and expedition planning
Valheim is the best first purchase when discovery matters more than a tightly authored quest route. Its procedural world, sailing, distinct biomes and regional bosses make the map itself the long-term challenge. PC Gamer placed it first in its “There and back again” exploration category because journeys and returns are less predictable than in the hand-crafted alternatives.
Construction follows structural-integrity rules, so roofs, towers and bridges need genuine support rather than unlimited free placement. Food does not prevent thirst or starvation, but different meals provide important buffs, making preparation and loadout choices meaningful without turning hydration into a constant chore. Death costs skill experience, while your equipment remains recoverable from a gravestone.
Valheim is also the least demanding of the three on the listed minimum memory and storage figures. Its Steam listing describes solo play and co-op for one to 10 players, plus portals that you craft yourself; portal item restrictions mean some resources still require a physical voyage.

Choose Enshrouded for building and movement
Enshrouded is the clearest choice for players who want to spend as much time designing a settlement as fighting. Its hand-crafted Embervale supports voxel terraforming, blocks in many shapes, furniture, NPC villagers and tools that help manage building decay. You can reshape terrain instead of merely placing structures on a fixed landscape.
The action-RPG layer is unusually mobile for this group: the Steam listing highlights a deep skill tree, grappling hooks, gliding and underwater exploration. Unlockable fast-travel points reduce routine trips, while player-created bases remain more limited than the world-scale terraforming system.

Survival rules are configurable. In PC Gamer’s comparison, food buffs and related survival systems are disabled by default, so Enshrouded suits builders who want pressure they can tune rather than mandatory hunger management. It supports solo play or co-op groups of up to 16, but its listed minimum of 16 GB RAM and 60 GB storage is substantially higher than Valheim’s.
Choose RuneScape: Dragonwilds for skills, magic and stricter survival
Dragonwilds is the strongest fit if RuneScape progression sounds more appealing than a fully random map. Its hand-crafted Ashenfall is set in Gielinor and ties exploration to skill leveling, craftable gear, potions, dragons and magic. Spells are practical tools as well as combat abilities: Jagex describes uses such as felling trees and breaking ore.

- Valheim Boar Loves You quote. A perfect design for fans of the best selling Viking game.
- An amazing and unique design which is also perfect as a gift.
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Its default routine is the most demanding. Thirst and starvation are active unless changed, and sleeping is required, which is why PC Gamer ranked it first for traditional “do-this-or-else” survival. Death does not remove XP, and a gravestone lets you recover your inventory. Portals are player-crafted and consume runes, giving resources an explicit role in travel.
Dragonwilds supports solo play or four-player teams. Steam lists a 25 GB installation and single-player and online co-op. Jagex reported more than one million early-access sales in 2026; Executive Producer Jesse America said, “Every update throughout Early Access has been shaped by player feedback, and we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve built together.”

Buying and platform checks before you start
- All three games have active Steam listings, but confirm the current operating-system requirements and regional availability on the store page before purchase.
- If you want a physical console copy, Jagex has announced PS5 and Xbox physical editions of Dragonwilds that include a disc. Check current retailer inventory and territory support; availability was not established universally.
- For a group purchase, decide your maximum party size first: four for Dragonwilds, 10 for Valheim and 16 for Enshrouded.
- Check your PC against storage and RAM requirements, especially for Enshrouded’s 60 GB and 16 GB minimum figures.
Bottom line
Start with Valheim if the promise of an unfamiliar world and long sailing expeditions is what excites you. Start with Enshrouded if building, terraforming, traversal abilities and adjustable survival systems come first. Start with RuneScape: Dragonwilds if you want recognizable RuneScape skills, useful magic and survival needs that remain active unless you deliberately relax them.
