Haldor is Valheim’s merchant in the Black Forest. His camp is selected from several possible world locations: the first candidate you discover becomes the active Haldor camp for that world, and a trader icon appears on your map. There is no universal coordinate because every world seed places the candidates differently. In the inventory list marked verified for Valheim 1.0 by ValheimHub in 2026, Haldor sells nine items, including Megingjord for 950 Coins, a Fishing Rod for 350 Coins, and an Egg for 1,500 Coins.
How Haldor’s location works
Haldor always belongs to the Black Forest biome, but he is not tied to one fixed point that every player can navigate to. The trader system creates multiple possible camps. Each trader type can have only one active camp in a world, and approaching one possible Haldor location permanently selects that camp. After discovery, the trader symbol is revealed on the world map.
This selection rule explains why two players using the same general map advice can report different coordinates. A seed map can display possible Haldor routes, but it cannot know which candidate your character has already activated. Once you have approached one candidate, the other possibilities no longer matter for your playthrough.
A 2026 placement guide from thevalheim.wiki says possible Haldor camps begin at least 1,500 metres from the world centre. That is a generation rule for candidate locations, not a promise that Haldor is 1,500 metres from your starting altar or from the point where you first leave spawn. Coastlines, mountains, rivers, hostile creatures and unexplored terrain can make the practical journey considerably longer.
Finding Haldor step by step
1. Prepare for a Black Forest search
Bring the equipment you normally use for a long expedition rather than setting out with a nearly empty food bar and a damaged weapon. The Black Forest can include steep terrain, water crossings and enemies that make a retreat inconvenient. Carry enough food, a reliable weapon, a shield if you use one, and tools for marking your route. A portal or a temporary shelter near a promising coastline can reduce the cost of repeated trips, although the exact setup is your choice.
2. Explore Black Forest regions methodically
Search the Black Forest rather than spending time looking through Meadows-only areas. Because the camp is selected when you approach a candidate, keep an eye on the map as you travel and avoid treating every suspicious clearing as disposable scenery. Exploring along the coast and around large, continuous Black Forest areas gives you more opportunities to cross a candidate zone than repeatedly circling your starting island.
3. Watch for the trader discovery marker
When you enter the discovery range of Haldor’s active candidate, the merchant becomes visible and the trader icon is placed on your world map. Use that icon as the authoritative reference for future visits. You do not need to calculate a permanent coordinate from another player’s seed: your own map marker records the location that matters.
4. Mark practical routes after discovery
Place additional map pins for a nearby portal, a safe shoreline, a bridge or a road through difficult terrain if those features help you return. Haldor’s camp is a destination for repeated purchases, so a route that is merely survivable once may become irritating when you need bait, a new utility item or a later upgrade. Keep the trader icon intact even if you add your own labels around it.
5. Use seed maps only as route-planning aids
External seed maps can show possible trader candidates and help you plan an exploration direction, but they cannot identify which candidate your character has already activated. Treat their markers as possibilities until the in-game icon appears. The permanent selection rule is why an apparently closer candidate on a seed map may not be the camp you can use.
Haldor’s current inventory and prices
The following nine-item list is from ValheimHub’s inventory page, labeled “Verified for Valheim 1.0” in 2026. Prices are paid in Coins. Availability follows the Haldor table cited by the Valheim Wiki (Fandom), accessed in 2026.

| Item | Price | Availability | What it provides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yule Hat | 100 Coins | Always available | Cosmetic headwear |
| Dverger Circlet | 620 Coins | Always available | Wearable light source |
| Megingjord | 950 Coins | Always available | Raises the inventory carry-weight limit by 150 |
| Ymir Flesh | 120 Coins | Available after defeating The Elder | Crafting material; the cited table identifies the boss gate |
| Fishing Rod | 350 Coins | Always available | Enables fishing |
| Fishing Bait | 10 Coins | Always available | Required for the Fishing Rod |
| Thunder Stone | 50 Coins | Available after defeating The Elder | Required to build an Obliterator |
| Egg | 1,500 Coins | Always available | Egg item; the cited inventory entry does not describe an additional use |
| Barrel Hoops | 100 Coins | Always available | Use not stated in the cited inventory entry |
Buying one of every listed item costs 3,800 Coins. That total is a simple sum of the listed prices, not a separate in-game bundle or discount.
What each purchase does
Megingjord: the main utility purchase
Megingjord increases your inventory carry-weight limit by 150. That extra capacity applies to the ordinary hauling problems that accumulate during mining, woodcutting, dungeon runs and sailing preparation. It does not make individual items lighter; it raises the amount you can carry before the encumbrance limit stops normal movement. For a character who regularly returns to base because a few additional ore pieces would exceed capacity, this is usually the most broadly useful first purchase.
Fishing Rod and Fishing Bait
The Fishing Rod enables fishing, and Fishing Bait is required to use it. Buying the rod without bait leaves you unable to fish, so treat them as a pair when planning your budget: 350 Coins for the rod plus 10 Coins for an initial bait purchase. Buy more bait when fishing is part of your food plan rather than assuming the rod alone completes the system.
Thunder Stone and the Obliterator
Thunder Stone is required to build an Obliterator. The cited Haldor table places it behind The Elder, so finding Haldor early does not let a new character buy it immediately. The stone costs 50 Coins once that gate is satisfied. If you have not yet defeated The Elder or have no plan to construct an Obliterator, spending scarce Coins on Megingjord or fishing may deliver more immediate value.

Ymir Flesh
Ymir Flesh costs 120 Coins and is also listed as available after defeating The Elder. The cited table identifies it as a gated item but does not establish a broader set of crafting recipes in the inventory entry itself. Treat the boss requirement as the important shopping detail: a locked listing is not a pricing error and will not become available merely because you have enough Coins.
Dverger Circlet
The Dverger Circlet costs 620 Coins and is always available. Its practical role is portable illumination, allowing you to see while keeping your hands available for other equipment. Players who already have a dependable lighting setup may reasonably place it below Megingjord or fishing in their spending order.

Yule Hat
The Yule Hat is a 100-Coin cosmetic purchase and is always available. It does not compete with Megingjord as a capacity upgrade or with the Fishing Rod as a new activity. Buy it when appearance or seasonal styling matters to your character, not because it improves hauling or combat according to the cited item descriptions.
Egg
The Egg is the most expensive entry in the listed inventory at 1,500 Coins. It is marked always available. The cited inventory material confirms the price and availability but does not describe an additional use, so decide based on your own progression needs rather than assuming that the high price automatically makes it the best early purchase.

Barrel Hoops
Barrel Hoops cost 100 Coins and are listed as always available. The supplied item entry does not provide a functional description, so this purchase should be treated as optional until you know how it fits your building or decorating plans.
Unlock timing: what changes after The Elder
Haldor can be useful before you defeat The Elder. The cited availability table lists Yule Hat, Dverger Circlet, Megingjord, Fishing Rod and Fishing Bait as always available. Those items do not wait for a boss victory once you have found the active camp and can pay their prices.
The same table lists Ymir Flesh and Thunder Stone as available after The Elder. In practical terms, a pre-Elder visit can reveal Haldor and let you buy core utility or cosmetic items, but it cannot bypass that progression gate. If either gated item is unavailable, verify your boss progress before spending time searching for a second camp; there is only one active Haldor camp in the world.
How to prioritize your Coins
For general exploration and resource hauling
Make Megingjord your first major utility target at 950 Coins. The 150-point capacity increase benefits almost every expedition type. After that, choose between fishing equipment and the Dverger Circlet according to your routine: the rod and bait add a new food-gathering option, while the circlet improves visibility without requiring a hand-held light.

For a fishing-focused food plan
Reserve 350 Coins for the Fishing Rod and at least 10 Coins for Fishing Bait. Buying both together avoids the common mistake of returning to Haldor with a rod but no consumable support. Additional bait purchases are a running cost, so keep a coin reserve rather than spending every remaining coin on cosmetic items immediately.
For an Obliterator project
Defeat The Elder first, then plan for the 50-Coin Thunder Stone when you are ready to build an Obliterator. The stone is inexpensive compared with Megingjord or the Egg, but its usefulness depends on constructing that specific device. If construction is not yet on your base plan, the purchase can wait without delaying the rest of Haldor’s always-available inventory.
For cosmetics and optional items
The Yule Hat and Barrel Hoops each cost 100 Coins, while the Dverger Circlet costs 620 Coins and the Egg costs 1,500 Coins. Buy these after accounting for the utility purchases that match your current play style. The high price of the Egg makes it especially important to confirm that you want the item before committing a large share of your savings.

Haldor’s trader reference lists several valuables and their sale values:
| Valuable | Coins received per item |
|---|---|
| Amber | 5 Coins |
| Amber pearl | 10 Coins |
| Ruby | 20 Coins |
| Silver necklace | 30 Coins |
The values are per item as listed by the trader reference. Before selling, check whether you are keeping an item for a personal collection, a decorative plan or a future trade decision. The same reference states that valuables sold to traders cannot be bought back. Selling is therefore a one-way conversion into Coins, not temporary storage.
To budget for Megingjord, for example, you need 950 Coins, which could come from 190 Ambers, 95 Amber pearls, 47 Rubies plus 10 Coins, or 31 Silver necklaces plus 20 Coins. Those combinations are arithmetic illustrations of the listed values, not recommendations about where to find the valuables. Mixing denominations is usually more practical than waiting for one exact type.

Common mistakes and fixes
“I searched the wrong biome.”
Haldor’s biome is the Black Forest. If your search has stayed in Meadows or another biome, change the exploration area before assuming the trader failed to spawn.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“A map guide gave me the wrong coordinates.”
There is no universal Haldor coordinate. Candidate placement is world-specific, and the first candidate you approach becomes active. Use coordinates from a seed-specific map only as possible routes and rely on your own in-game trader icon after discovery.
“I found a candidate, but the trader is not elsewhere.”
That is expected after selection. Each trader type has one active camp per world, and approaching a possible location permanently places that trader there. Search for another camp only if you have not yet triggered discovery at any candidate.
“The Thunder Stone or Ymir Flesh is unavailable.”
Both are listed as gated until after The Elder. Confirm that the boss has been defeated in the current world and character progression. Having enough Coins or finding a different route to Haldor does not remove the listed gate.
“I bought a Fishing Rod but cannot fish.”
Fishing Bait is required for the rod. Return to Haldor with at least 10 Coins for bait, and include future bait purchases in your fishing budget.
“I sold a valuable and now want it back.”
The trader reference states that valuables sold to traders cannot be bought back. Treat every sale as permanent and keep items you may want for another purpose before converting them into Coins.
A practical first-visit checklist
- Confirm that the discovery occurred in the Black Forest.
- Check that Haldor’s trader icon is visible on your map.
- Record a safe route or portal connection for repeat visits.
- Compare your Coin balance with the 950-Coin Megingjord target.
- If fishing matters, reserve 350 Coins for the rod and 10 Coins for bait.
- Do not expect Ymir Flesh or Thunder Stone before The Elder.
- Keep valuables you may need; sold trader goods cannot be bought back.
What the 1,500-metre rule really tells you
The reported minimum of 1,500 metres from the world centre is useful for narrowing a search, but it should not be converted into a guaranteed distance from spawn. The world centre, your starting location, and the route you can actually walk are different reference points. Water, terrain and biome boundaries can make a mathematically direct distance irrelevant to your travel time.
Use the rule as a planning constraint when inspecting a seed map or deciding how far to extend an expedition. Once the in-game trader icon appears, stop applying the general rule: your active camp is now known, and your map marker is more precise than any universal distance statement.
Haldor in one decision table
| If your immediate goal is… | Prioritize | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Carry more ore, wood or dungeon loot | Megingjord — 950 Coins | Adds 150 carry weight and helps nearly every expedition |
| Catch fish for food | Fishing Rod — 350 Coins, plus Fishing Bait — 10 Coins | The rod requires bait |
| Improve hands-free lighting | Dverger Circlet — 620 Coins | Provides wearable light and is always available |
| Build an Obliterator | Thunder Stone — 50 Coins | Available after The Elder and required for the device |
| Collect seasonal cosmetics | Yule Hat — 100 Coins | Always available cosmetic item |
| Buy the most expensive listed item | Egg — 1,500 Coins | Highest listed price; the cited entry does not describe an additional use |
Haldor is therefore both a navigation objective and a progression shop. Find him by searching Black Forest candidate areas, let the first discovered camp become your permanent location, and use the map icon for every return trip. Spend early Coins on the item that solves your current bottleneck—usually Megingjord for carrying capacity—while remembering the Elder gate on Ymir Flesh and Thunder Stone and the permanent nature of sales.
