There is no official RAM or CPU minimum for a Valheim dedicated server in Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide (April 11, 2024). A Valheim Server Help community FAQ gives 2 vCPU and 4 GB of RAM as an informal Linux VPS starting point, not a guaranteed requirement. Your world’s complexity and actual utilization determine whether that capacity is enough.
What “minimum requirements” really means for a Valheim server
Two different answers are often mixed together. The official answer is that Iron Gate has not published a minimum RAM amount, CPU core count, or processor speed for the dedicated server. The community answer is a practical sizing rule intended to help someone choose a small Linux VPS. Those statements are not contradictory: one describes an absent specification, while the other describes an experience-based starting point.
Iron Gate’s A Guide to Dedicated Servers, dated April 11, 2024, explains installation, launch options, networking, save handling, backups, administration, Linux packages, and Docker compatibility. It does not promise that a particular hardware configuration will support a particular player count or world size. Treat the guide as the authority for supported setup and behavior, and treat community sizing as a hypothesis that you verify with monitoring.

How much RAM and CPU should you plan for?
Use 2 vCPU and 4 GB as a starting point, not a promise
The community FAQ’s 2-vCPU/4-GB figure is useful when you need a first VPS size and have no measurements of your own. It is not a manufacturer specification, and it does not establish a universal player limit. A lightly populated world may behave differently from a mature world with extensive construction, many objects, accumulated saves, and frequent simultaneous activity.

Memory use can increase as the world becomes more complex. The community guidance therefore recommends watching utilization and increasing capacity when the host approaches its limits. Measure during the busiest period your players actually create rather than relying on an idle server reading.
What to monitor
- RAM: watch used memory, available memory, and swap activity. Sustained swapping is a warning that the machine is short of physical memory, not evidence that Valheim has an officially defined RAM threshold.
- CPU: observe total utilization and whether one or more cores remain saturated during saves, exploration, combat, or heavy building. A high average can hide a single busy thread.
- Disk space and latency: keep room for the world, backups, logs, and future growth. The guide provides save and backup controls but does not publish a storage minimum or benchmark.
- Network behavior: distinguish a server process problem from a client’s Internet connection or a failed port-forwarding rule.
Increase resources when players experience repeatable lag and monitoring shows a corresponding CPU, memory, or storage bottleneck. If utilization remains low, adding RAM or cores is unlikely to fix a firewall, routing, mod, or client-side issue.
Home hosting versus rented hosting
A dedicated server can run on equipment you control or on a rented machine. The game software and its documented launch options are the same; the operational trade-offs are different.

No current provider prices, uptime guarantees, or performance comparisons are established here. Verify those details for the region and plan you are considering. A small always-on Windows or Linux computer can be suitable for home hosting, but choose its memory, storage, operating-system support, and wired-network capability for your actual configuration rather than assuming any particular mini PC will work.

Steam networking and Crossplay networking
Steam backend: forward the configured port and port plus one
Iron Gate documents 2456–2457 as the default Steam-backend range. The server uses the port you configure and the next port as well. If you change the starting port, your router rule must match that new pair. Forwarding the wrong port, forwarding only one of the two ports, or forwarding to the wrong internal address can make a running server unreachable from outside the home network.
Reserve a stable local address for the host, then create the router rules for the selected port pair and the appropriate protocol settings described by your router. Test from a network outside the home; a successful local connection does not prove that Internet access is configured.

Crossplay: relay access without router forwarding
Launching with -crossplay makes the server transmit data through a relay. Iron Gate says this removes the need to expose the server with router port forwarding for players outside the local network. Players can join with a public IP and port, a join code, or the server list, depending on the supported client flow.
Crossplay has an important limitation: a Crossplay server cannot be joined by a local or loopback IP in that mode. Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ says the join code can be copied from the pause menu and entered through Join Game on another platform. Xbox consoles can join a dedicated server with Crossplay enabled, but they cannot host a dedicated server on the console.
Supported operating environments and launch files
Windows
The Steam installation flow places the dedicated server in the Steam Library’s Tools section. Iron Gate supplies the Windows launcher start_headless_server.bat. Make a copy before editing it: game updates can reset the original launch script, while your copy preserves your chosen server name, world, password, port, save path, and other options.

The Linux launcher is ./start_server.sh. The guide lists these package dependencies:

Install the dependencies using the package manager for your distribution, then run the script from the directory containing the server files. Distribution-specific package commands can differ, so use the names above as the checklist rather than copying a command intended for a different Linux release.
Docker
Docker is an alternative when a Linux installation has older libraries than the server expects. Iron Gate lists GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26 as minimum library versions for this approach. Check the image, host kernel, CPU architecture, volume permissions, and save-volume mapping before starting. A container does not remove the need to plan backups or monitor the host.
Step-by-step setup plan
- Choose the hosting location. Decide whether an existing Windows/Linux computer, a VPS, or a managed service best fits your availability, networking skills, and maintenance time. If using a Linux VPS, 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM is a community starting point only.
- Install the dedicated server. In Steam, open Library, switch to Tools, and install the Valheim Dedicated Server tool. For Linux or Docker, confirm the documented dependencies or library versions first.
- Copy the launcher. On Windows, copy
start_headless_server.bat; on Linux, copy or version-controlstart_server.sh. Edit the copy so an update does not erase your settings. - Set the world and access options. Configure the server name, world name, password, and any command-line options you need. Use
-savedirwhen the default save location is not appropriate for your disk layout. - Select the networking mode. Use the Steam backend when its port-forwarding model suits your group. Add
-crossplaywhen relay access and cross-platform joining are more useful than local-IP access. - Configure access controls. Use the documented admin, banned, and permitted lists to control who can administer or join the world. Protect those files with the same care as the launch script.
- Start and test. Launch the copied script, confirm that the process remains running, and test from the intended client platforms. For Steam hosting, test an external connection after applying router rules; for Crossplay, test a join code or server-list entry.
- Record a recovery path. Note the server directory, save directory, launch options, router settings, and backup location. This turns a failed update or hardware move into a repeatable restore instead of a reconstruction exercise.
Saves, backups, and safe administration
The guide documents default save directories for Windows and Linux and provides -savedir to override them. Put saves on storage that is included in your backup plan, and verify that the account running the server can read and write the chosen directory.
Iron Gate also documents save intervals and automatic-backup settings. Choose an interval that limits lost progress without creating unnecessary operational noise, and retain backups on a different disk or machine when possible. A backup stored in the same failing drive is not a complete recovery plan.

Stop the server with Ctrl+C. The guide warns that closing the command window may leave the server process running in the background. If a restart appears to do nothing, check for an existing process before launching a second instance; two processes competing for the same save files or ports can create confusing failures.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The server starts, but nobody outside the house can join
- Confirm whether you selected Steam or Crossplay.
- For Steam, verify that the router forwards the configured port and port plus one to the host’s current local address.
- Check the host firewall and confirm that the server is listening on the expected interface.
- Test from a genuinely external network rather than relying on a local loopback test.
- For Crossplay, remove unnecessary port-forwarding changes and test with a join code or server-list entry; local and loopback IP joins are not supported in that mode.
Players report lag or disconnects
- Collect CPU, RAM, swap, disk, and network observations during the incident.
- Compare the timing with world activity such as exploration, construction, combat, or saves.
- Increase capacity only when monitoring identifies a resource ceiling; otherwise investigate routing, firewall rules, client connectivity, or software conflicts.
An update erased the configuration
Reapply settings from the copied launcher rather than editing the vendor’s original file. Keep a separate record of launch arguments and the save path so an update does not become a configuration-discovery exercise.
Linux reports missing libraries
Install libatomic1, libpulse-dev, and libpulse0 for the documented Linux setup. If the distribution’s libraries are too old, evaluate the Docker route and its GLIBC_2.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.26 requirements instead of forcing incompatible packages into the host system.
How to choose a capacity without false precision
Start with the community figure only if you need a concrete initial Linux VPS order. Before inviting a larger group, estimate the world’s likely activity, leave headroom for backups and the operating system, and define what “acceptable” means for your players. After launch, review peak rather than average utilization and scale when the measurements justify it.
The most important decision is often administrative rather than numerical. A home server offers direct control and may use hardware you already own, but you maintain the operating system, router, backups, and recovery process. A rented or managed service can reduce those chores, but you must verify its file access, Crossplay support, backup behavior, resource definitions, and migration process. Neither option has a universal advantage; the right choice is the one whose operational burden you can reliably handle.
