Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To let ore, metal, and other normally restricted items travel through a Valheim portal, set the world modifier to Portal items. On a dedicated server, use -modifier portals casual in the startup command. If the command also contains a preset, put this modifier after -preset so the portal setting overrides the preset.
The change affects the shared world, so stop the server cleanly, back up the world and server files, restart, and test with a restricted item before your players rely on the new behavior.

What the Portal items setting changes
Valheim normally blocks selected resources from passing through portals. Ore and smelted metals are the examples players encounter most often: you must carry them by ship, cart, or on foot unless the world permits portal transport. The Portal items modifier changes that rule at the world level rather than changing one character’s inventory.
On a locally hosted or otherwise configurable world, choose Portal items in the world’s world-modifier settings. On a dedicated server, the equivalent command-line value is -modifier portals casual. The word casual is the server argument value; the player-facing label is Portal items.

This is a world-wide rule. Every player using that world receives the same portal behavior, and the setting remains in effect after a restart until an administrator changes it again.
Valheim portal modes compared
Valheim exposes four portal-related modes. The table separates item transport from portal availability during boss activity and from a complete portal shutdown.

World-modifier names and command values can change with a game update. Check the labels shown by the Valheim build running on your server, and use Iron Gate’s dedicated-server argument list as the authority when a label and a command example appear to differ.

Set Portal items in a world you manage
Using the world-modifier interface
- Open the world-management screen for the world you intend to change.
- Open its World modifiers section.
- Find the portal rule and select Portal items.
- Apply the change, load the world, and test with a small quantity of ore on a non-production copy or during scheduled maintenance.
The exact menu placement can vary between game builds and hosting arrangements. If your interface does not expose world modifiers, use the dedicated-server startup argument instead.
Enable portal items on a dedicated server
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guidance recommends editing a copied startup script rather than modifying the original. The procedure is the same in principle on Windows and Linux, but the script filename differs.
- Stop the server cleanly. Wait for the process to finish saving before editing files.
- Back up the world and server files. Keep a dated copy outside the live save directory so you can restore the previous world state if the change has an unexpected effect.
- Copy the startup script. On Windows, the standard file is
start_headless_server.bat. On Linux, usestart_server.sh, following the layout created by your installation. - Open the copied script in a text editor. Locate the command that launches the dedicated server.
- Add the modifier. Append
-modifier portals casualto the command line. Keep the three tokens together and preserve the other arguments already in use. - Put it after any preset. If the launch command contains
-preset, place-modifier portals casuallater on the same command line. Iron Gate notes that a preset can overwrite earlier modifiers, while modifiers that follow the preset override it. - Save the script and restart. Start the server with the edited copy, then wait until it has finished loading the world before connecting.
- Verify in game. Move a normally restricted item, such as ore, through a portal. Perform this test on a copy of the world or in a planned maintenance window rather than during an active expedition.
Example command placement
Your launch line will contain additional arguments for the world name, password, backend, or installation path. The relevant ordering looks like this:

... -preset <preset-name> ... -modifier portals casual ...Do not replace your complete command with this fragment; insert the modifier into the existing line. If no preset is present, add the modifier anywhere the server accepts world modifiers, while keeping it with the other launch arguments.
Why the modifier must follow a preset
A preset is a bundle of world rules. When the server parses a preset, it can set portal behavior as part of that bundle. A later explicit modifier is the administrator’s final instruction, which is why -modifier portals casual belongs after -preset. If you put it before the preset, the server may start successfully yet still enforce the preset’s portal rule.
After every change, inspect the startup log for argument or parsing errors and verify behavior in the world. A server that starts does not necessarily confirm that the intended modifier won the precedence order.

Administrative alternative: devcommands and TeleportAll
World modifiers can also be changed administratively with in-game devcommands. The world-modifier reference lists the global key TeleportAll, described as allowing all items to be teleported. This route is useful when an administrator needs to alter a live world without editing its launch script, but it is still a world-state change rather than a per-player toggle.
Use this method only with the permissions and command syntax supported by the server build you run. Make a backup first, announce the change to every administrator, and record what was changed. Mixing a command-based change with a startup-script change can make later troubleshooting difficult if staff do not know which setting is authoritative.

Ore still will not pass
- Confirm the active world. A server can host several worlds; make sure the test character entered the world whose modifier you edited.
- Check the final command line. Verify the live service starts the copied script, not an older shortcut or service definition.
- Check ordering. If
-presetappears, ensure-modifier portals casualcomes after it. - Restart after editing. A running server will not normally re-read its startup arguments until it is stopped and started again.
- Check for a build mismatch. UI labels and command values can change in updates. Compare the value accepted by your current build with Iron Gate’s official dedicated-server argument documentation dated April 11, 2024, and with the labels displayed by the game.
The server will not start after editing
- Restore the backup copy of the startup script and confirm that the server launches without the new argument.
- Re-add only
-modifier portals casual, preserving spaces, hyphens, and the existing quoting used by your script. - Check that the script is being run by the account and service that normally starts the server.
- Review the startup output for an unknown modifier or a malformed preset argument before inviting players back.
Players report inconsistent results
Ask everyone to disconnect and reconnect after the restart, then test the same item in the same world. Different results usually indicate that players are entering different world instances or that one server process was restarted with a different script. Keep one documented launch file as the source of truth.

A tamed animal does not arrive
The Portal items description covers items; its reference specifically does not include tamed animals. Treat animal transport as a separate gameplay rule rather than evidence that the modifier failed for ore or metal.
Maintenance details worth checking before the change
Portal configuration is often changed during broader dedicated-server maintenance. Iron Gate’s guide documents the default Steam-backend port range as 2456–2457, save locations, backup intervals, and the -crossplay option. Confirm those values in your own installation before editing files or firewall rules, because a host may have customized them.
- Port and firewall: Changing a world modifier does not by itself change network ports. Keep the existing port forwarding and firewall rules unless your hosting setup requires something else.
- Backups: Preserve a restorable world copy before changing modifiers, and continue the normal backup schedule afterward.
- Cross-play: Leave the existing
-crossplaysetting unchanged unless you are deliberately changing the backend; it is separate from portal item rules. - Communication: Tell players whether the world now permits metal transport and whether the change is permanent, experimental, or limited to a maintenance window.
Choosing the right mode
Choose Portal items when logistics are the goal
Use Portal items when the group wants unrestricted resource movement and does not want portal rules to slow building, smelting, or base relocation. The dedicated-server value is casual.
Keep Normal for the standard survival challenge
Normal preserves the familiar restriction on non-portalable resources. It is the appropriate choice when the server should behave like an unmodified world.
Choose No boss Portal for boss-event restrictions
No boss Portal keeps portals in the world but blocks their use while a boss is active. Its dedicated-server value is hard.
Choose No Portal for a portal-free world
No Portal disables portal travel entirely. Its dedicated-server value is veryhard, making it a world-wide rule rather than a restriction limited to ore.
