Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
A Valheim server can be healthy and reachable while missing from the Community list. The first question is which backend it uses: a server launched with -crossplay uses the PlayFab Crossplay backend and is normally joined with a code, not found through Steam’s browser. A Steam-backend server needs -public 1, successful registration, the configured ports forwarded to the host, and firewall access. Use the matching fix below instead of changing router settings blindly.
How Valheim server discovery works
Valheim has two different connection and discovery paths. The launch argument determines which one your dedicated server uses:
| Backend | How it is selected | How players find it | Network requirement | Most important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Do not include -crossplay in the launch script. |
Community browser, provided the server is public and registered. | The host must expose and forward the configured server-port range. The official default is ports 2456–2457. | A local address such as 192.168.x.x is not an external address; players outside the host’s network need the reachable public address and forwarded port. |
| Crossplay | Add -crossplay to the launch script. |
Crossplay join code. A server may be absent from the Steam-oriented Community browser even when it is operating normally. | PlayFab relay infrastructure carries the traffic, so port forwarding is not required for access from outside the local network. | Players should use the code supplied by the server flow. A loopback or local address cannot be used by someone outside the host’s network. |
This distinction explains the most common apparent contradiction: friends can join by an address, but nobody can see the server in the list. Direct connection and browser publication are separate functions. A reachable endpoint does not guarantee that the server is registered in the browser, and a Crossplay server is not required to appear in a Steam browser.
Fix a Steam-backend server that is missing
1. Confirm the launch arguments you are actually running
Stop the dedicated server and open the copied start_headless_server.bat on Windows or the equivalent Linux launch script. Check the command that starts the server, not a template file you no longer use.
- For Steam discovery, make sure
-crossplayis absent. - Set
-public 1if you want the server listed. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide defines this as the default visibility setting that makes a server visible in the browser. - If the script contains
-public 0, the server is deliberately hidden. Remove that setting or change it to-public 1, then save the script. - If you changed the port, record the value passed to
-port; the router rule must use that same starting port and configured range.
Restart the server after saving. Editing a script while an older process is still running does not change the process that players are currently trying to find.
2. Wait for the registration message
Watch the server console during startup. The official guide says the server is ready to accept connections when it displays the exact message “Game server connected.” If that message never appears, treat the problem as startup or network registration rather than a browser-search problem.

If the prompt was dismissed earlier, create or enable the firewall permission for the dedicated-server program and restart the server so it can register again. A firewall rule that allows the game client does not necessarily allow the separate dedicated-server process.
3. Forward the correct ports to the correct machine
For the Steam backend, Iron Gate identifies ports 2456–2457 as the default range and requires the configured range to be forwarded to the computer running the server. The router’s destination must be that host’s current local address.
- Find the host computer’s local address in your router’s connected-device list or operating-system network settings.
- Open the router’s port-forwarding page.
- Forward the range beginning with the value in the script’s
-portargument. With the default configuration, that is 2456–2457. - Set the forwarding destination to the dedicated-server host, not a different gaming PC or a previous DHCP address.
- Apply the rule, restart the server, and wait for “Game server connected.”
If you move the server to another computer or its local address changes, the old rule can remain present but point nowhere useful. Reserve the host’s local address in the router when possible so the destination stays stable. The external port players use must correspond to the configured server port; forwarding an arbitrary pair while the script uses another value will not publish the server correctly.

4. Use the right address when testing
A player on the same home network may be able to use a local address, while a friend on the internet cannot. For an internet test of a Steam server, give the remote player the host’s public address and the configured port. Do not use 127.0.0.1, localhost, or a private LAN address for someone outside your network.
Testing from a friend’s separate internet connection is more informative than testing only from another device on the same Wi-Fi. Some routers handle internal “hairpin” connections differently from genuine outside traffic, so a successful local test does not prove that the forwarded service is reachable from the internet.
Use Crossplay when you want relay-based access
1. Enable the Crossplay backend deliberately
Add -crossplay to the command in the active Windows batch file or Linux launch script, then restart the server. The official guide explains that Crossplay sends server traffic through a relay server; outside players therefore do not need a router port-forwarding rule.
Do not keep troubleshooting the Steam Community browser after switching to Crossplay. A current Crossplay troubleshooting reference specifically notes that these servers may not appear in the Steam community browser. That absence alone does not mean the server failed to start.
2. Give players the join code
Use the join code displayed by the game or server flow. The Crossplay FAQ’s procedure is to copy the code and send it to the friend. On the player’s side, open Join Game → Add server, paste the code, and submit it. This is the intended discovery path for a Crossplay server.

Keep the code associated with the current server session. If you stop, recreate, or otherwise change the server and receive a different code, send the current one rather than an older message from a previous session.
3. Do not substitute a local address for the Crossplay workflow
A loopback or private LAN address only identifies the host inside its own network. Someone outside that network cannot use it to reach a Crossplay server. Use the supported join-code workflow; where the game presents an address-and-port option for that backend, it must be a public, reachable address rather than a local one.
Check game versions before changing more network settings
Iron Gate’s Crossplay announcement warns that the game version on the server and the versions used by friends should match. A version mismatch can prevent a connection even when the backend, visibility setting, and network path are correct.
- Have every player check for a pending game update before testing again.
- Restart the game after it updates; an already-running client can retain the old version until relaunched.
- Update the dedicated-server installation as well, then restart its process.
- If one friend can join and another cannot, compare their versions before assuming the server’s discovery configuration is wrong.
Version matching is especially important when diagnosing Crossplay because a valid join code proves that the invitation path exists, not that every connecting client is compatible.

Successful direct connection narrows the problem: the server can be reached through at least one address path, but browser visibility may still be disabled or using a different backend.

- Open the active launch script and identify whether
-crossplayis present. - If it is present, stop expecting a Steam-browser entry and distribute the current Crossplay join code.
- If it is absent, verify
-public 1and remove-public 0. - Confirm the console reached “Game server connected.”
- For the Steam backend, verify that the router forwards the range beginning at
-portto the host and that the firewall permits the server program. - Have a remote player test with the public address and configured port rather than the host’s private address.
This sequence avoids a common misdiagnosis. An IP connection demonstrates reachability from that particular network and address; it does not establish that the server is advertising itself to the Community browser.

You edited the wrong script
Dedicated-server downloads commonly include a copied batch file or launch script. Make sure the process you start is the file you edited. If two installations exist, the visible server name, world, and arguments can come from a different directory than the one you inspected.

The visibility setting is correct, but registration never completes
Return to the console and look for “Game server connected.” Until that message appears, investigate the server process, firewall permission, and internet path. A browser refresh cannot compensate for a server that has not registered.
The port rule does not match the command
Compare the router rule character by character with the script’s -port value. Check both the start and end of the forwarded range, and check that the destination is the host’s current local address. A rule for the default range is wrong if the script was changed to another port.
You are mixing backend instructions
Port forwarding and -public 1 belong to Steam-browser discovery. A Crossplay server relies on relay infrastructure and a join code. Applying only half of one backend’s procedure—such as forwarding ports while leaving Crossplay enabled, or searching the Steam browser for a Crossplay server—creates confusing results.

Only one player cannot join
Check that player’s game version first. Then verify that they are using the correct current join code or, for Steam, the public address and configured port. If other players connect through the same path, the server’s basic registration is less likely to be the cause.
Choosing Steam or Crossplay for a new server
Choose the backend based on how your group plays rather than trying to make both discovery systems behave identically.
- Choose Steam backend when everyone is using Steam and you want the server to be searchable in the Community browser. Plan to maintain
-public 1, firewall access, and router forwarding for the configured port range. - Choose Crossplay when players use different supported platforms or you prefer relay access without configuring inbound router ports. Plan to distribute a join code and accept that the server may not be listed in Steam’s browser.
You can change the choice by changing the launch arguments, but after doing so, restart the dedicated-server process and give players the connection method for the new backend. A browser listing from one backend is not evidence that the other backend is active.
When managed hosting is a reasonable alternative
Running the server yourself requires maintaining the dedicated-server installation, the launch script, the selected backend, firewall permissions, and—on Steam—the router’s port-forwarding rule. A managed Valheim dedicated server can be useful when nobody in the group can keep those pieces configured, but confirm which backend and connection method the service supports before moving an existing world. The key question is not whether a host advertises a Community listing; it is whether its documented setup matches your players’ platforms and the Steam or Crossplay workflow you intend to use.
Final troubleshooting order
- Identify whether
-crossplayis present. - For Crossplay, use the current join code through Join Game → Add server; do not use Steam-browser absence as a failure signal.
- For Steam, set
-public 1, ensure-public 0is not hiding the server, and wait for “Game server connected.” - Allow the dedicated-server program through the Windows firewall when prompted.
- Forward the configured port range to the host, using 2456–2457 when the default port is unchanged.
- Use a public address for remote Steam testing, never a loopback or private LAN address.
- Make sure the server and every player’s game version match.
Following that order separates visibility, registration, routing, and compatibility. It usually reveals whether the server is hidden by configuration, using a different discovery system than expected, unreachable from outside the LAN, or blocked by a version mismatch.
