To create a custom Valheim world, enter your seed in the Seed field of the in-game Worlds > New dialog, choose the world version you will play, and generate the world. Seeds are case-sensitive and become fixed when the world is created; changing a seed means creating a different world.
For a dedicated server, generate the world locally or use your host’s world generator, then move the matching .fwl and .db files together. There is no Valheim dedicated-server launch parameter that accepts a seed directly.

What a Valheim seed controls
A Valheim seed is the text value used to generate a world’s procedural layout. It determines the arrangement of terrain and discoverable locations for that generated world, including biomes, boss altars, merchant locations and dungeons such as crypts.
The value is not a password or a world name. The world name identifies the save in your list; the seed determines the generated map. Two worlds can have different names but the same seed, while changing even the capitalization of a seed can produce a different result because seeds are case-sensitive.

Generation is tied to the game build. A seed that produced a particular map on an older major version may not reproduce that map after a major world-generation change. Treat a seed as “this text on this world version,” not as a permanent map identifier across every future release.
Create a seeded world in single-player or as a host
Use the normal world-creation screen. You do not need a command-line switch, mod or external generator for a standard single-player game or a multiplayer world you host.

- Launch Valheim and open the Worlds screen.
- Select New to open the new-world dialog.
- Enter a unique world name. This is the label you will see in the world list and is separate from the seed.
- Find the Seed field. It is normally filled with a random value.
- Delete the prefilled value and type or paste your intended seed exactly. Preserve capitalization and avoid adding spaces before or after it.
- Set the World version to the build you intend to play. Use the current version for a new world unless you have a specific reason to reproduce an older build.
- Confirm creation. Valheim generates the world using the seed and version selected.
Once generation finishes, the seed is fixed for that world. The game does not provide an edit operation that replaces the seed while preserving the same world. If you want to try another value, create another world rather than overwriting the existing save.
Why exact entry matters
- Capitalization: Seeds are case-sensitive. Treat uppercase and lowercase letters as different input.
- Copy and paste: Pasting is safer for long or mixed-case seeds, but check for an accidental leading or trailing space.
- World name versus seed: Renaming a world does not change its map. Entering a different seed creates a different map even if you reuse the same world name.
- Version: A matching seed on a different major build is not guaranteed to produce matching terrain or locations.
Choose the right world version
The world-version control is important when you are trying to reproduce a map from a guide, a friend or an earlier save. Select the same game build used when that seed was documented. If the source does not state a build, assume its map may not match your current installation.

Valheim’s official Steam announcements identify the 1.0 release as the update that brought the Deep North biome. The latest patch listed in those announcements is 1.0.17, described as a bug-fix release dated October 6, 2026. Because the announcement feed can change, check the live Steam announcements before treating that patch number as your installed build.
Community observations indicate that world-generation parameters tend to change with major updates. That is an observation rather than a formal guarantee from the developer, but it explains why an older “perfect seed” can stop matching a map preview after an update. Keep the game version with any seed you record.
Recording a reproducible seed
For each seed worth keeping, record the exact seed text, capitalization, world version, date you generated it and any important observations. A small text file or spreadsheet is sufficient. If you share the seed with friends, include the version alongside it; sending only the seed leaves out information they may need to reproduce your map.
Preview a seed before committing
Valheim does not provide an official in-game map preview for an unplayed seed. Third-party seed-map tools can render an estimated map so you can inspect likely biomes, boss altars, Haldor and crypts before spending time in the world.

Search results commonly identify valheim-map.world (Valheim World Generator), Cake Hosting’s Valheim seed map and the Valheim Wiki seed guide as examples. These are community or third-party resources, not official Valheim tools. Their support for the current build, including 1.0 and the Deep North, is not verified here.
A cautious preview workflow
- Open a seed-map tool and enter the seed exactly as it appears in your world-creation dialog.
- Select the tool’s version option, if it provides one. Choose the same build you selected in Valheim.
- Inspect the biomes and coastlines first. A map that looks attractive at a zoomed-out level may still have inconvenient starting terrain.
- Check boss-altars and the locations of Haldor and crypts if those locations affect your planned progression.
- Look specifically for support for the current build. If the tool does not identify a version, treat its markers as estimates.
- Write down promising seed-and-version pairs, then generate the finalists in Valheim and verify the opening area in the actual game.
A preview is a planning aid, not proof that every marker is correct. A tool can lag behind a game update or interpret a seed using different generation rules. Do not delete an existing world solely because a preview disagrees; first confirm the seed spelling and version.

Some hosting control panels reportedly provide a World Manager-style flow: stop the server, choose an option such as Generate New World, and enter a name and seed. The exact controls depend on the host, so use the labels shown in your panel and make a backup before replacing a live world.
Use a custom seed on a dedicated server
Valheim dedicated servers do not have a seed launch parameter. The dependable method is to create the seeded world locally, then upload the resulting world files to the server. A host panel may offer an equivalent generator, but that is a hosting feature rather than a universal Valheim server option.

Local-generation procedure
- On a computer running Valheim, create the world with Worlds > New.
- Enter the exact seed and choose the world version that matches the server’s game build.
- Let Valheim finish generating the world. If you only need the initial map, you do not have to progress in it before transferring it.
- Stop the dedicated server before changing its world files. Never replace files while the server is actively writing the save.
- Locate the generated world’s two files: the
.fwlmetadata file and the.dbworld-progress file. - Back up the server’s existing pair before replacing anything.
- Upload the new
.fwland.dbfiles together, preserving their matching base name. - Configure the server to load that world name, then start the server and test the map with one player before inviting everyone.
The .fwl file contains metadata such as the world name, seed and configuration. The .db file contains world progress. Neither file is useful as a standalone replacement for the complete save; moving only one can leave the server with missing or inconsistent data.
What to verify after upload
- The server is stopped during the transfer and restarted afterward.
- The two files have the same base name and came from the same local world.
- The server is configured to load that exact world name.
- The server and clients are running compatible game builds.
- The starting area and at least one expected landmark are checked before the old backup is removed.
Back up and migrate a seeded world safely
A seed alone is not a backup. It can recreate the initial generated layout, but it does not preserve exploration, buildings, inventory, defeated bosses or other progress. Back up both world files whenever you migrate a save or before applying a major update.
- Stop the game or server so no save operation is in progress.
- Copy the matching
.fwland.dbfiles to a dated backup folder. - Keep the original filenames and note the seed and game version in a separate text record.
- After migration, start the destination and confirm that your structures and explored areas are present.
- Retain the old backup until the new copy has been tested.
If you are starting a fresh world from the same seed, use a new world name or preserve the old files elsewhere. Reusing a name without understanding which save files are active is an easy way to load the wrong map.

The map looks different from a friend’s map
- Compare capitalization character by character.
- Check for an extra space introduced during copy and paste.
- Confirm that both players selected the same world version.
- Ask when the friend generated the world. A major update may use different generation parameters.
- Verify that the friend shared the seed, not merely the world name.
A map website shows landmarks that are not in game
First recheck the seed and selected version. If both are correct, the preview may not support your current build. Third-party tools are not official and their accuracy against the current release is not established. Use the actual game as the final authority.

The dedicated server starts a different world
- Stop the server and confirm that the uploaded files have the intended matching base name.
- Check that the server configuration references the intended world name.
- Make sure both
.fwland.dbwere uploaded; do not mix one file from an older backup with one from a new world. - Restore the pre-change backup if the server’s original progress is at risk, then repeat the transfer with the server stopped.
I want to change the seed but keep my buildings
Valheim’s seed is fixed for a generated world. Creating a new seed creates a new world; it does not transform the existing terrain while retaining its progress. Preserve the old world files as a backup and treat the new seed as a separate save.
Mods and advanced seed options
Guide snippets mention third-party mods named Cartographer’s Table, which reportedly displays the seed on the in-game map, and Customizable Seeds, which reportedly adjusts biome rules at world creation. Their pages were not verified, and compatibility with Valheim 1.0 is unconfirmed.

A practical seed-selection checklist
- Decide whether you need a completely new world or only a different starting location.
- Choose a seed and preserve its exact capitalization.
- Record the intended game version.
- Use a third-party preview only as an estimate, and confirm that it supports that version.
- Inspect the starting biome, nearby coast and travel distances that matter to your group.
- Generate the world in Valheim and verify the result before investing time.
- For a dedicated server, transfer the matching
.fwland.dbfiles while the server is stopped. - Keep a dated backup and a text record of the seed, world name and version.
What changed with Valheim 1.0 and the Deep North?
Official Steam announcements describe 1.0 as the release that opened the Deep North biome. Because adding or changing a biome can affect generation rules, seeds documented for earlier major versions should not be assumed to produce the same Deep North layout—or the same complete map—on 1.0.
The announcements list version 1.0.17 as a bug-fix patch dated October 6, 2026. That detail is useful when matching a current installation, but patch information can change as new updates appear. Check Steam’s current announcement feed and the version shown by your game before generating a world intended to match a published map.
