Godlike.Host offers hosted Valheim servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To run a Valheim modpack on a dedicated server, install the Valheim BepInEx pack in the server’s root directory, start the server once to generate its folders, then copy the modpack’s plugin folders into BepInEx/plugins. Build and export the same profile in r2modman so every player uses matching files. Stop the server before file changes, verify plugin-load messages after restart, and decide about crossplay before committing to a modded setup.
What a Valheim modpack server actually contains
A Valheim modpack is not a single server download. It is a coordinated installation made of:

- BepInEx: the framework that loads plugins into the game and creates the server-side configuration structure.
- Plugin folders: the individual mod files, normally placed in
BepInEx/plugins. - Configuration files: settings generated in
BepInEx/configafter the relevant plugin starts. - Matching client files: gameplay-changing mods generally need to be installed for players as well as on the server.
On a self-hosted machine, the server root is the directory containing the Valheim dedicated-server executable and its startup files. On managed hosting, the equivalent locations and upload controls depend on the provider’s panel. The server software is distributed by Steam as the free Valheim Dedicated Server tool.
Decide whether your server can be modded
Self-hosted dedicated server
You need permission to copy files into the dedicated server’s root directory and to start and stop the process. This route gives you direct access to BepInEx, plugins, config and log files, so it is the clearest option for troubleshooting.

Managed host with a control panel
Some providers expose a host-specific “Modding Framework” selector with options such as Vanilla, BepInEx and ValheimPlus. Selecting BepInEx and restarting may fetch the current BepInEx pack automatically. The label, location and behavior are provider-specific; do not assume that a panel option with the same name installs the same files or version. If the panel has no framework option, use its file manager or SFTP upload feature and follow the self-hosted folder layout.
Crossplay requirement
Crossplay is a separate design decision. It is enabled with the -crossplay launch flag and uses Iron Gate’s PlayFab backend, producing a six-digit join code that changes whenever the server starts. Removing the flag disables crossplay. Console players cannot run PC mods, so a group that must include console users should normally plan for an unmodded server.

Guides disagree about whether the crossplay transport itself blocks BepInEx. One position is that crossplay and BepInEx do not work together in practice; another is that only particular mods fail because they assume Steam IDs or Steam networking. Treat the combination as unresolved on the current build: test a disposable server with your exact mod list before moving an established world.
Prepare a safe installation
- Confirm that every player can run the PC version of Valheim and the mod manager. Console clients cannot install the PC mod files.
- Record the server’s current Valheim build and check the dedicated-server version in Steam. Do not assume a client update and server update are identical.
- Stop the server before installing BepInEx, uploading plugins, changing configurations or replacing files.
- Back up the world, server configuration and any existing
BepInExdirectory. Keep the backup outside the live server root so an update cannot overwrite it. - Choose a small, known-compatible test profile first. Add large or gameplay-changing mods only after the framework and one test plugin load successfully.
Mod compatibility is especially uncertain around a major Valheim release. A current guide reports that mods may lag the Valheim 1.0 release and that there was no public test branch for 1.0 at the time it was written. Treat a game update as a possible breaking change rather than updating the server and modpack simultaneously without a rollback copy.
Install BepInEx on a self-hosted server
The canonical Valheim package is the Valheim BepInEx pack, commonly identified as denikson/BepInExPack_Valheim. It is also pinned near the top of the Valheim listing in Thunderstore. Use the package’s current release rather than copying a random client installation.

- Stop the dedicated server. End the server process cleanly and wait until its console has closed before touching files.
- Open the server root. This is the directory where the Valheim Dedicated Server files are installed, not your personal Valheim game profile.
- Copy the BepInEx pack into that root. Preserve the package’s directory structure. Do not place the entire downloaded archive inside another nested folder; the server root must be able to see the BepInEx loader files directly.
- Start the server once with no mods added. The first boot allows the loader to initialize and create its working directories.
- Stop it after the first successful boot. Confirm that a new
BepInEx/directory exists in the server root and containsplugins/,config/andcore/subfolders.
If those folders are not created, the pack is probably in the wrong directory, the archive was left nested one level too deep, or the server did not actually start with the loader files visible. Correct that layout before adding any plugin; otherwise a missing framework can look like a broken mod.
Use a host panel’s automated framework option
- Stop the server from the hosting panel.
- Open the server’s installation or modding settings.
- Choose the panel’s BepInEx option, if available. Do not choose a different framework simply because it appears in the same menu.
- Save the setting and restart once so the host can download or unpack its current BepInEx files.
- Open the panel’s file manager and verify that
BepInEx/plugins,BepInEx/configandBepInEx/coreexist in the live server directory. - Stop the server again before uploading your modpack folders.
If the panel reports success but those folders are absent, ask the host where its server root is mounted and whether its automated framework supports custom plugins. Uploading files to a similarly named backup or staging directory will not load them.
Build an isolated profile in r2modman
Use a dedicated r2modman profile for the server rather than modifying a general-purpose Valheim profile. Isolation makes it possible to export one reproducible set, remove a suspect plugin and roll back without disturbing unrelated games or experiments.
- Open r2modman and select Valheim.
- Create a new profile and give it a clear name that identifies the server or modpack.
- Install each required mod through the manager. Let the manager resolve dependencies; many Valheim plugins list the Valheim BepInEx pack as a dependency.
- Launch the profile locally once if the mod author requires first-run files. Close the game before copying anything.
- Open the profile’s Settings and choose Browse profile folder.
- Open
BepInEx/pluginsinside that profile. The folders in this location are the files you will transfer to the server. - Record optional configuration changes separately. A profile can contain client settings that should not be copied blindly to a server.
Do not copy the entire r2modman profile over the server root. The server needs the plugin folders in its existing BepInEx tree; profile metadata, manager caches and client-only files do not belong there.
Copy the modpack to the server
- Stop the dedicated server and verify that no server process is still writing files.
- From the r2modman profile folder, select the required plugin folders under
BepInEx/plugins. - Upload or copy those folders into the server’s
BepInEx/pluginsdirectory. Keep each mod’s internal folder structure intact. - If a mod package includes a server configuration supplied by its author, place it in
BepInEx/configas directed by that package. Otherwise, allow the plugin to generate its own configuration on first launch. - Restart the server and watch the console from the beginning of the boot sequence.
- After a successful start, stop the server before making any corrections, then restart again to test one change at a time.
A managed host may offer a web file manager instead of SFTP. The transfer principle is the same: upload to the live server’s BepInEx/plugins, not to a home directory, backup folder or client profile directory.

Give every player the same profile
In r2modman, export the profile as a shareable code or profile file and distribute it to the players. Each player should import that profile instead of selecting mods manually. This reduces version drift and ensures that dependencies are installed consistently.

When a package says it is client-only, leave it off the server unless its documentation explicitly requires a server component. When a package changes world rules, entities, progression or networking, assume both sides need it until the package’s compatibility notes say otherwise.
Verify that the pack loaded
Check the directory layout
The live server root should contain BepInEx/plugins, BepInEx/config and BepInEx/core. The plugin folders should be directly beneath plugins, not one level deeper because of an extra archive or profile folder.
Read the server console
On startup, BepInEx messages should appear before or alongside the plugin load messages. Look for each expected plugin by name. A clean boot with no mention of a plugin means the loader did not see that folder, the plugin is in the wrong location, or its dependencies prevented loading.

After a plugin runs successfully, its configuration normally appears in BepInEx/config. The exact filename is mod-specific. If the file is missing, use the console output to determine whether the plugin failed before configuration creation or whether the package expects a different location.

Test in a disposable world
Connect with one player first and test the mod’s defining feature before inviting the whole group. A successful process start does not prove that every gameplay feature is compatible with the current Valheim build or with the rest of the pack.
Crossplay: make the decision before launch
With -crossplay enabled, the server uses PlayFab and presents a new six-digit join code after each start. Removing the flag returns the server to a non-crossplay configuration. Because console clients cannot run PC mods, a modded cross-platform group is not a straightforward supported arrangement.
There is no settled general rule that every BepInEx installation is incompatible with crossplay. Some guides report that the combination fails in practice, while another attributes failures to individual mods that depend on Steam-ID or Steam-networking assumptions. The safe procedure is:

- Test the exact BepInEx version and plugin list with crossplay enabled.
- Have a PC player and, if relevant, a console player attempt the intended connection method.
- Remove the
-crossplayflag and repeat the test if the modded configuration fails. - Choose an unmodded crossplay server when console access is a hard requirement.
Troubleshoot the common failures
The server starts, but no BepInEx folder appears
- Confirm that the pack was copied into the dedicated-server root, not the client’s Valheim directory.
- Check for an extra nested folder created when extracting the archive.
- Start the server once after correcting the path and wait for a complete boot.
- If a host panel installed the framework, verify the panel’s actual live directory with its file manager.
BepInEx loads, but a plugin is absent from the console
- Confirm the plugin folder is directly under
BepInEx/plugins. - Check that the upload did not omit a dependency or leave files inside an archive.
- Compare the server profile with the exported r2modman profile and copy only the missing plugin after stopping the server.
The server stops or throws errors after a new mod is added
Stop the server, remove the most recently added plugin, and boot with the previously working set. If the server recovers, test that plugin alone in a disposable world. Then check whether its build supports the current Valheim version and whether another plugin supplies a conflicting dependency. Keep the working profile as a rollback rather than deleting it.
Players are rejected or see missing-mod errors
Export the server’s r2modman profile again and have every player import it. Compare mod versions, dependency versions and enabled/disabled status. A client-only plugin can differ only when its package explicitly allows that; gameplay-changing plugins should match the server.

A configuration change has no effect
Stop the server before editing the file, confirm that you changed the configuration under the live server’s BepInEx/config, and restart. Some settings are generated only after the first successful plugin load. If the plugin regenerates the file, make one change at a time and read the startup log for parsing errors.
Crossplay works without mods but fails with the pack
Test the pack without -crossplay, then add plugins one at a time with crossplay enabled. Pay particular attention to mods that mention Steam IDs, Steam networking or platform-specific behavior. If console participation is essential and no tested combination works, use a separate unmodded crossplay server.
Update, roll back and maintain the server
Freeze a known-good set
Keep a copy of the exported r2modman profile, the server’s BepInEx directory and the world backup whenever the pack is stable. Record the Valheim build, BepInEx package release and plugin versions in a simple text file beside the backup.
Update in a controlled order
- Back up the world and the working server files.
- Stop the server.
- Update the client profile in r2modman and test it locally.
- Update the server’s plugin folders to the same intended versions.
- Start the server and inspect every plugin-load message.
- Join with one player and test the pack before announcing the update to the group.
A Valheim game update can break a previously working plugin set, and mods may not be ready when a major release arrives. If the updated server fails, restore the backed-up plugin folders and the previous profile rather than mixing old and new files.
Remove a mod cleanly
Stop the server, remove that plugin’s folder from BepInEx/plugins, and review its generated configuration in BepInEx/config only after making a backup. Some mods leave world data behind; removing files does not guarantee that a world is unchanged. Test the world copy first.
