Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Valheim servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
A Valheim join code works only when the host is using Crossplay-capable hosting and the other player enters the code through Join Game → Add server. If the code is missing, rejected, or cannot be resolved, first confirm the server backend and create a fresh code. Then bring every client and the server to the same version, apply the correct networking rule, and check Xbox visibility settings.
Do not start by forwarding ports or changing router settings. Crossplay servers use a relay and normally need no port forwarding; router rules apply to Steam-backend servers instead.

What a Valheim join code is supposed to do
Iron Gate Studio’s Crossplay FAQ explains that a code appears after you start a server through the game or host a dedicated server and open the pause menu. The host copies that code. The other player opens Join Game, chooses Add server, pastes the code, and submits it.
The code identifies the active Crossplay session. It is not a replacement for a server name, a local IP address, or a Steam server port. A code can become unusable when the host session ends, the host changes backend, or the code is copied incorrectly. If the code is absent or appears stale, restart the host session and obtain a new one before troubleshooting the router.
Quick diagnosis
| What you see | Most relevant check | Corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| No join code in the pause menu | Hosting mode or backend | Start a Crossplay session, or add -crossplay to a dedicated-server startup command. |
| The friend cannot find an entry field | Join workflow | Use Join Game → Add server; do not use a server-name search field. |
| The code is rejected immediately | Code freshness and copying | End and restart the host session, then copy the newly displayed code exactly. |
| Steam players connect but another platform cannot | Backend and client versions | Confirm Crossplay is enabled and that every platform has the same current game update. |
| Connection fails after port changes | Network model | Remove unnecessary forwarding for Crossplay. Steam-backend servers require the configured port and the next port to be reachable. |
| An Xbox player cannot see Crossplay | Xbox account visibility controls | Check parental-control settings, which can hide the Crossplay option. |
1. Confirm that the host is using Crossplay
In-game hosting
A join code is associated with Crossplay-capable hosting. Before copying anything, have the host start the world in the mode intended for players on different platforms. Once the world is running, open the pause menu and look for the join code. If the menu does not show one, the session was not started on the Crossplay backend or the session needs to be restarted.
Dedicated servers
For a dedicated server, the startup command must include the -crossplay argument when players are joining from different platforms. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation states that this argument runs the server on the Crossplay backend and allows users from any platform to join. Without it, the server uses the Steam backend; only Steam users can discover and join that server.
Use the argument as part of the server’s existing startup command, for example:
... -crossplay
The ellipsis represents the command you already use for the server; do not remove its world, save, or other required options. After changing the command, fully stop and start the server, then obtain a new code from the running session. A code copied before the backend change is not a substitute for a code from the new Crossplay session.
2. Generate and enter a fresh code correctly
- Stop the current host session if it is still running with a missing, old, or questionable code.
- Start the world again in Crossplay mode. For a dedicated server, verify that
-crossplayis present before launching. - Open the pause menu and copy the newly displayed join code.
- On the joining device, open Join Game.
- Select Add server.
- Paste the code into the add-server field and submit it.
Do not paste a Crossplay code into a server-name search box. Do not replace the code with the host’s local address or loopback address. Those are different connection methods, and Iron Gate’s guide specifically says a Crossplay connection cannot use a local IP or loopback address.

If the host leaves the world, changes the hosting mode, or restarts the server, treat the old code as obsolete and repeat the sequence. Copying a code from a previous session is a common reason a friend cannot resolve it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3. Bring every client and the server to the same update
Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay across platforms, but crossplay depends on each platform receiving the same compatible build. A client that is waiting for an update can fail even when the code and backend are correct.
Check the game version on the host, the dedicated server if one is used, and every joining device. Install any pending update, then restart the game or server so the updated build is actually running. If one player is on a different build, do not treat repeated code attempts as a networking problem until the versions match.
The October 15, 2026 Mac App Store delay
On October 15, 2026, Iron Gate reported that the Mac App Store build had a small rollout delay for Patch 1.0.20. Until that build caught up, Mac App Store players could not crossplay with other platforms. If a Mac App Store player is involved on that date, check whether Patch 1.0.20 is installed before changing router or server settings. The restriction was tied to the temporary version mismatch, not to the join-code entry path.
4. Apply the networking rule for the selected backend
Crossplay backend: no router port forwarding
Crossplay servers use a relay. Iron Gate’s networking guidance says they do not require router port forwarding. The same guidance says a Crossplay connection cannot use a local IP or loopback address. Therefore, forwarding ports or replacing the code with an address can move you away from the supported workflow rather than fix it.

For a Crossplay setup, verify the backend, generate a current code, and use Join Game → Add server. If you have already added forwarding rules, they are not required for the relay path; remove or disable them only if doing so is safe for other services on your network.
Steam backend: forward the configured port and the next port
A server running without -crossplay uses the Steam backend. That model requires the server to be reachable on its configured port and the next port. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide documents the default range as 2456–2457. The actual range can differ if the server configuration uses another starting port, so read the value from the server configuration rather than assuming the default.
Port forwarding is relevant only to this Steam-backend path. It does not make a Crossplay code valid, and it cannot make a Steam-only backend accept players from other platforms. If the group includes Xbox, Mac, or another non-Steam platform, switch the server to Crossplay instead of trying to extend a Steam-backend setup with more forwarding rules.
5. Check Xbox Crossplay visibility
An Xbox player can join a dedicated server when Crossplay is enabled on both the Xbox side and the server side. Iron Gate notes that parental-control settings can hide the Crossplay option. If the Xbox player cannot find the setting or cannot see the relevant server controls, review the account’s family and privacy restrictions first.
After changing an account setting, return to the game and verify that Crossplay is visible and enabled. The server must still be running on the Crossplay backend; an Xbox-side setting cannot turn a Steam-backend server into a cross-platform server.

6. Choose the setup that matches your group
The right fix depends on whether you need cross-platform access, a persistent world, or the simplest administration. These are separate decisions:
| Setup | Platform reach | Network model | World availability | Operational work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Temporary in-game host on Steam backend | Steam players only | Reachable Steam ports; default documented range is 2456–2457 | Available while the host session is running | Low setup effort, but the host must be present |
| Temporary in-game host using Crossplay | Players on supported platforms | Crossplay relay; no router port forwarding | Available while the host session is running | Low setup effort; generate a code each session |
| Dedicated server on Steam backend | Steam players only | Forward the configured port and the next port | Persistent while the server process is maintained | Requires self-managed networking and server administration |
| Dedicated server using Crossplay | Players on supported platforms | Crossplay relay; no router port forwarding | Persistent while the server is maintained | Requires server administration, but avoids router forwarding |
A dedicated server is persistent, while a temporary in-game host ends when that host session ends. If the group needs a world that remains available without one player keeping the game open, use a dedicated server and select the backend according to the group’s platform mix.

“There is no join code”
Check whether the host started Crossplay and, for a dedicated server, whether -crossplay is in the startup command. If the mode is correct, stop and restart the session and inspect the pause menu again. Do not begin with port forwarding; a missing code is a hosting-mode issue first.

Generate a new code and copy it directly from the current pause menu. Make sure the joining player selected Add server, not a name-search field. If the host restarted or changed backend after the code was copied, repeat the process with the new session.
“Cannot resolve” or no result after submission
Verify that the server is still running, that the code came from that same session, and that both players are on compatible versions. For Crossplay, do not substitute a local IP or loopback address. For Steam backend, verify the configured port and the next port are reachable and that all players are on Steam.

Steam connects but Xbox or Mac does not
This pattern points to backend or version compatibility. Confirm -crossplay on a dedicated server, confirm Crossplay is enabled on Xbox, and check for a platform-specific update delay such as the Mac App Store Patch 1.0.20 rollout issue recorded on October 15, 2026.
The code worked earlier but fails now
Codes belong to the active host session. Restart the host or dedicated server, obtain a fresh code, and submit that code through the documented path. If the failure persists, continue with the backend, version, and platform checks rather than reusing the previous code.
What not to assume
Iron Gate’s cited documentation does not establish a universal fix involving cache deletion, PlayFab-account resets, VPN changes, or a particular firewall product. Those actions may matter in an individual case, but they are not guaranteed remedies for a Valheim join-code failure. Use them only when a platform-specific support case identifies them as relevant, and do not replace the basic backend, code, version, and networking checks with them.
When to contact support
If the documented workflow succeeds on paper but the connection still fails, provide enough detail for the problem to be reproduced. Iron Gate asks reporters to include as much information as possible. Gather the following before submitting an English support request or bug report:
- Platform of the host and every joining player.
- Whether the host is an in-game session or a dedicated server.
- Backend mode: Crossplay or Steam.
- Client and server version numbers, including the platform build.
- The exact error text and the screen where it appears.
- The date and approximate time of the failed attempt, including the time zone.
- Whether a newly generated code was used after restarting the host.
- Relevant lines from the dedicated-server log around the failure.
- Whether Xbox parental-control settings were checked when an Xbox account was involved.
Describe the shortest sequence that reproduces the failure: start the server, obtain the code, open Join Game → Add server, submit it, and record the result. This is more useful than reporting only that “the code does not work,” because it distinguishes an unavailable code, an entry-path error, a version mismatch, and a backend or reachability problem.
Quick Recap
Reliable order of operations
- Identify the platform mix and decide whether the server must be Crossplay.
- Confirm the host mode; add
-crossplayto a dedicated-server command when cross-platform players are expected. - Restart the host session or server and copy a new code from the pause menu.
- Enter it through Join Game → Add server.
- Check client and server versions, including platform-specific rollout delays.
- Use relay rules for Crossplay and port-forwarding rules only for the Steam backend.
- On Xbox, confirm that parental controls have not hidden Crossplay.
- If all checks pass, send support the platform, version, backend, error, time, and log evidence.
