In Valheim 1.0, the permanent way to increase inventory capacity is to buy two pocket upgrades from Haldor. Defeat Moder to unlock Wider Pockets for 1,000 coins, then defeat The Queen to unlock Deeper Pockets for 2,000 coins. Each upgrade adds an eight-slot row, taking the usual 32-slot inventory count to 40 and then 48.

Megingjord does not add slots. It raises your carrying-weight limit from 300 to 450, so it solves encumbrance rather than a full grid. You can use both upgrades and Megingjord together, but Megingjord occupies the accessory slot.

What “more inventory slots” means in Valheim

Valheim has two separate inventory pressures: available cells and carrying weight. A character can have empty cells but still become encumbered, or fill every cell while remaining below the weight limit. The correct upgrade depends on which problem you see.

Inventory element What it controls How to increase it
Storage slots How many separate item stacks or equipment entries can be stored Buy Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets from Haldor
Carrying weight The total weight you can carry before movement is restricted Equip Megingjord

PC Gamer describes the starting layout as eight hotbar slots plus 24 inventory slots. Gamers.Wiki presents the standard arrangement as a 32-slot grid, then counts the pocket rows as 40 and 48 slots. These descriptions use slightly different labels for the same baseline capacity: eight hotbar positions and 24 backpack cells are commonly counted as 32 usable slots.

The pocket upgrades add storage rows; they do not increase the weight limit. Megingjord adds weight capacity; it does not create another row. Keeping that distinction in mind prevents spending coins on the wrong solution.

How to unlock the two vanilla pocket upgrades

1. Find Haldor in the Black Forest

Haldor is the trader who sells both pocket upgrades. Locate his shop in the Black Forest and return to him after each required boss is defeated. The upgrades are purchased directly from his trading screen, so you need enough coins on the character making the purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Defeat Moder for Wider Pockets

After Moder is defeated, Haldor offers Wider Pockets for 1,000 coins. Buying it adds one eight-slot row. Under the usual 32-slot count, your capacity becomes 40.

3. Defeat The Queen for Deeper Pockets

Once The Queen is defeated, return to Haldor and buy Deeper Pockets for 2,000 coins. It adds a second eight-slot row. With both upgrades, the commonly reported total is 48 slots.

4. Budget for both purchases

Plan for 3,000 coins in total: 1,000 for Wider Pockets and 2,000 for Deeper Pockets. The costs are separate; purchasing the first row does not discount the second.

  1. Reach Haldor in the Black Forest.
  2. Defeat Moder.
  3. Return to Haldor with at least 1,000 coins and purchase Wider Pockets.
  4. Defeat The Queen.
  5. Return with another 2,000 coins and purchase Deeper Pockets.

Capacity before and after each upgrade

State Added rows Common total-slot count Coins paid
Starting inventory None 32 (8 hotbar plus 24 inventory cells) 0
After Wider Pockets One eight-slot row 40 1,000
After Deeper Pockets Two eight-slot rows total 48 2,000 additional; 3,000 total

If a guide or interface calls the starting backpack “24 slots” and another source calls the whole arrangement “32 slots,” check whether it is excluding the hotbar. The upgrades themselves are unambiguous: each contributes eight additional positions, for 16 extra positions together.

Where to get the coins

Coins can come from chests, dungeons, monster drops, and selling valuables to Haldor. PC Gamer specifically lists rubies, amber, and silver necklaces among the valuables that can be sold. Bring saleable loot on a trader run instead of discarding it during an expedition, and keep the 3,000-coin target in mind if you want both rows as soon as each boss unlocks the next purchase.

  • Chests: Check containers while exploring; coins found in them can be spent directly.
  • Dungeons: Dungeon exploration supplies both loot and opportunities to find coins.
  • Monster drops: Some enemies drop coins, so combat-focused exploration can build the balance over time.
  • Valuables: Sell rubies, amber, and silver necklaces to Haldor when you are prioritizing the pocket upgrades.

The upgrade prices are fixed at 1,000 and 2,000 coins in the stated Valheim 1.0 progression. A character that has already spent coins on other trader goods may need an additional farming trip before purchasing a row.

Megingjord: more weight, not more slots

Megingjord addresses a different bottleneck. The Valheim GameCore inventory reference lists a 300 base carry-weight limit and +150 from Megingjord, for a total of 450 while it is equipped.

Situation Likely issue Best fix
The grid is full but you are not encumbered Insufficient storage cells Buy Wider Pockets or Deeper Pockets
You are encumbered while cells remain empty Insufficient weight capacity Equip Megingjord
Long resource run causes both problems Capacity and weight pressure Use the pocket upgrades and Megingjord if you can give up the accessory slot

Megingjord does not change the number of rows, the hotbar, or the total number of item positions. It lets the existing inventory hold heavier contents before the encumbrance threshold is reached. Conversely, Wider Pockets and Deeper Pockets do not let you carry heavier contents; they only provide additional places to put them.

Choosing the right upgrade for a trip

When the grid fills first

If you repeatedly return home with free weight but no empty cells, prioritize the pocket rows. Wider Pockets is the first opportunity after Moder, and Deeper Pockets becomes available after The Queen. This is especially useful on gathering trips where many different materials occupy separate stacks.

When weight fills first

If you still have open cells when the encumbrance warning appears, Megingjord is the targeted solution. The additional 150 weight capacity can keep a mining or hauling run moving without changing your storage layout.

When both limits matter

On a long resource run, equip Megingjord and buy both pocket upgrades if they are available. This combination increases the number of positions and the weight you can carry, but the belt occupies the accessory slot. Decide whether that trade-off is acceptable for the armor, utility, or other accessory you would otherwise wear.

Do the upgrades survive death, logout, and world changes?

Gamers.Wiki states that purchased rows remain attached to the character after death, logout, reload, and changes between worlds. You do not need to repurchase Wider Pockets or Deeper Pockets after recovering a tombstone or entering another world with that same character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The upgrades are character-specific. In co-op, defeating a boss sets the relevant world progression key, allowing the trader’s offer to become available, but each character must pay for their own upgrade. A new character does not inherit another character’s purchased rows, even when joining the same world.

Co-op planning and shared boss progression

When a group defeats Moder or The Queen, the world records the boss progression that unlocks the corresponding Haldor offer. That shared progression does not make the purchase free for everyone. Each player should bring the required coins to Haldor and complete the transaction on the character who needs the extra row.

  • Confirm which character is making the purchase before spending the coins.
  • Do not assume a freshly created character has the veteran character’s rows.
  • If one player cannot see the offer, verify that the required boss defeat has been recorded in the world and that the player is speaking with Haldor.

Practical inventory planning after 48 slots

Even the maximum vanilla capacity does not remove the need to plan. More rows reduce forced trips, but they do not change item weights or any restrictions on what can be transported. Before a long expedition, decide whether the objective is volume, weight, or a mixture of both.

For high-volume gathering

Use the pocket rows as the priority. Carrying many different materials consumes cells quickly, so the extra 16 positions from both upgrades are more valuable than additional weight capacity when the grid is the first limit you hit.

For heavy mining or hauling

Equip Megingjord if the warning appears while cells remain open. If you have not yet bought the rows, remember that a heavier limit will not create a place for a new stack once every slot is occupied.

For a mixed expedition

Use the 48-slot arrangement and Megingjord when the accessory trade-off is acceptable. Leave enough flexibility for equipment and unexpected loot rather than filling every cell before leaving base.

Troubleshooting the vanilla method

Haldor does not show Wider Pockets

Wider Pockets is tied to Moder’s defeat. Return to Haldor after the boss progression has been recorded and check that you are on the character who intends to buy the upgrade. You also need 1,000 coins available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deeper Pockets is missing

Deeper Pockets requires The Queen’s defeat and costs 2,000 coins. If you have only defeated Moder, the second row is not yet unlocked. After The Queen is defeated, revisit Haldor and inspect the trading screen again.

You bought a row but still become encumbered

The purchase increased storage capacity, not weight capacity. Equip Megingjord for the additional 150 carry weight, and remember that doing so uses the accessory slot.

A new character has fewer rows

Rows are attached to the character that purchased them. Character progression is not automatically shared, so the new character must meet the unlocked offer and pay the stated price independently.

The upgrade seems gone after death or changing worlds

Purchased rows are reported to persist through death, logout, reload, and world changes. Check that you are using the same character and that the inventory interface is displaying the additional rows rather than a different character’s baseline layout.

Community option: Megingjord Overhaul

Players who want an additional belt row can use the community mod Megingjord Overhaul. Its Thunderstore listing for version 1.3.0 describes an eight-slot belt inventory row that appears when Megingjord is equipped, plus a swappable second hotbar.

The mod listing documents drag-and-drop inventory handling, persistence across save and load, tombstone handling on death, and portal restrictions for items that cannot normally be teleported. Those behaviors are mod features, not additions to the vanilla game, so they may differ from the base inventory rules.

Requirements

  • Valheim 0.219 or later.
  • BepInEx 5.4.2200 or later.
  • The Megingjord Overhaul package, version 1.3.0 as listed for the mod.

Trade-offs and compatibility checks

The extra row is tied to equipping Megingjord, so it does not replace the vanilla pocket upgrades and does not remove the accessory-slot decision. A second hotbar can change control habits, while portal restrictions still apply to non-teleportable items. Check the mod’s current Thunderstore entry and your installed Valheim and BepInEx versions before enabling it; game updates or other inventory and interface mods can create compatibility problems.

Keep the modded approach separate from the vanilla progression when troubleshooting. If you remove the mod or load a save without its dependencies, the additional belt row and second hotbar may not be available, while the two Haldor purchases remain part of the character’s vanilla progression.

Vanilla versus modded capacity

Feature Vanilla Valheim 1.0 Megingjord Overhaul
Wider Pockets One permanent eight-slot row after Moder; 1,000 coins Unaffected; still a vanilla purchase
Deeper Pockets One permanent eight-slot row after The Queen; 2,000 coins Unaffected; still a vanilla purchase
Maximum commonly counted vanilla total 48 slots Vanilla total plus an eight-slot belt row while Megingjord is equipped
Additional hotbar None beyond the normal hotbar Swappable second hotbar listed by the mod
Installation requirements None beyond the game Valheim 0.219+, BepInEx 5.4.2200+, and the mod
Persistence and death behavior Pocket rows stay with the character Mod listing documents save/load persistence and tombstone handling

Bottom line for a full inventory

For the standard game, find Haldor, defeat Moder, and spend 1,000 coins on Wider Pockets. After The Queen, spend 2,000 more on Deeper Pockets. The two eight-slot rows add 16 positions and bring the usual 32-slot count to 48. If the warning is caused by weight rather than a full grid, equip Megingjord instead; its 150-point bonus raises the limit from 300 to 450 but adds no slots. A community mod can provide another belt row, but it requires compatible versions of Valheim and BepInEx and carries the usual mod-related trade-offs.
