To open the Gates of Mörkhalla in Valheim, craft an Intricate Key in three stages: obtain an Intricate Key Mould, make five Bloodgold Ingots, cast the key at a level 4 Black Forge, then finish it with five Liquid Frost in a Frost Foundry. You also need a Grappling Hook to reach the tower’s raised entrance.
The mould is not guaranteed. You can find it in the Winding Tunnels or obtain it from certain Deep North enemies. Because published accounts disagree about how many finished keys are required and whether gates consume them, prepare the materials only after checking the current wiki or patch information for your game version.

What the Intricate Key does
The Intricate Key is a crafted progression item for the Gates of Mörkhalla, rather than a guaranteed enemy drop. Its recipe deliberately spans several Deep North systems: dungeon exploration for the mould, enemy-material processing for Bloodgold, and cold-processing stations for Liquid Frost. A mould by itself is not a usable key, and the intermediate Cast: Intricate Key is not the finished item that opens the gate.
The entrance is elevated on a Mörkhalla tower. Reaching the gate requires a Grappling Hook, so finding the tower is not enough; bring the traversal item before committing to the final trip. The crafting chain is:
| Stage | Station or location | Requirement | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Find the mould | Winding Tunnels or Deep North enemies | Exploration or combat | Intricate Key Mould |
| Make Bloodgold | Smelting setup | Petrified Tissue from petrified Gammeltrolls | 5 Bloodgold Ingots |
| Cast the key | Level 4 Black Forge | 5 Bloodgold and 1 Mould | Cast: Intricate Key |
| Finish the key | Frost Foundry | 5 Liquid Frost | Intricate Key |
| Open the gate | Gates of Mörkhalla | Finished Intricate Key and Grappling Hook for access | Entrance unlocked |
The recipe values above are the reported values for the Deep North content associated with Valheim 1.0. The current patch was not verified, so a changed recipe or station requirement is possible if your installation is on a later build.
Before you travel: the preparation checklist
Gather the items and confirm the stations before entering the tunnels or climbing to the tower. This avoids reaching the gate with only an intermediate component.
- Have access to a level 4 Black Forge for the casting step.
- Plan a route to a Frigid Kiln, which converts Ice into Liquid Frost.
- Plan a route to a Frost Foundry for the final transformation.
- Bring or arrange a Grappling Hook for the raised Mörkhalla entrance.
- Leave room in your inventory for the mould, Bloodgold materials, Liquid Frost and the two key stages.
- Allow roughly 50 seconds for the Frost Foundry process once the cast and five Liquid Frost are loaded.
- Check how the current patch handles key consumption before spending the Bloodgold. Published accounts do not agree on the number of keys needed.
The three stations can be placed close together if your base layout allows it. Keeping the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry in one working area reduces repeated hauling while you convert materials and finish the key.
Step 1: obtain the Intricate Key Mould
The mould has two broad acquisition routes. You can fight the relevant Deep North enemies, or search the Winding Tunnels and break wooden rubble and debris along tunnel walls and floors. Neither route guarantees the item.
Enemy drops
Eyeless Ones can drop the Intricate Key Mould. Elakings can also drop it when they are encountered without a lantern. If you are already clearing enemies while exploring, inspect the drops rather than assuming the dungeon itself is the only source.
The available descriptions do not establish a universal drop chance for these enemies. Treat a kill as an opportunity, not a promise, and do not abandon the tunnel-search route solely because enemies have not produced the mould.
Winding Tunnels rubble
In the Winding Tunnels, break wooden rubble and debris positioned along the tunnel walls and floors. The reported figures from the Valheim Wiki’s Weird Gloop entry are 13.8% for wardrobe shafts and 12.0% for piles of rubble. Those percentages describe the chance for the mould from the named objects; they do not mean that every tunnel contains one or that the first object will yield it.

| Winding Tunnels object | Reported mould chance | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Wardrobe shaft | 13.8% | Break and check each eligible object; expect unsuccessful attempts. |
| Pile of rubble | 12.0% | Clear debris on tunnel floors and walls; the result is not guaranteed. |
Because these are per-object chances, clearing more eligible debris gives you more opportunities, but it does not create a guaranteed threshold. The number of objects in a particular run and the time required to reach them are not established by the available information, so plan for a variable amount of tunnel work.
Choosing a mould route
Use the route that matches what you are already doing:
- Search the Winding Tunnels when you can reach the dungeon and want a repeatable object-by-object search. Mark cleared areas so you do not waste time rechecking the same rubble.
- Fight Eyeless Ones or unlanterned Elakings when those enemies are already blocking your route or when you are exploring the Deep North outside the tunnels. Their drops are possible, not guaranteed.
- Combine both methods when the first run produces no mould. The two routes are independent opportunities, so a failed rubble search does not rule out an enemy drop later.
Do not craft Bloodgold first merely because the mould has not appeared. The mould is the gating component that confirms you can proceed to the Black Forge recipe, while Bloodgold requires its own material chain.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 2: reach the raised Gates of Mörkhalla entrance
The Gates of Mörkhalla sit high on a tower. A Grappling Hook is required to reach the raised entrance, so approach the structure with the hook available rather than trying to solve the climb after arriving.
The hook requirement is a traversal requirement, not a substitute for the key. You still need the completed Intricate Key to unlock the entrance. Conversely, having the finished key does not remove the need to reach the elevated gate. Treat the climb and the lock as two separate checks on your route plan.
Arrival checklist
- Locate the Mörkhalla tower and identify the elevated entrance.
- Confirm that the Grappling Hook is available before starting the ascent.
- Reach the gate and verify that you are interacting with the entrance rather than an interior or decorative structure.
- Use the finished Intricate Key only after you have confirmed that the current patch’s consumption behavior is acceptable for your remaining route.
The evidence does not establish an alternate ground-level entrance, a way to bypass the hook, or a guaranteed location for every Mörkhalla tower. Do not treat those details as interchangeable with the documented raised entrance.
Step 3: make the five Bloodgold Ingots
Bloodgold is the metal component of the key. You need five Bloodgold Ingots for the casting recipe. The starting material is Petrified Tissue, taken from petrified Gammeltrolls.

The documented chain is therefore:
- Find petrified Gammeltrolls.
- Collect Petrified Tissue from them.
- Smelt the tissue into Bloodgold Ingots.
- Set aside five finished ingots for the Black Forge casting step.
The available material does not state how many units of Petrified Tissue produce one Bloodgold Ingot. Do not calculate a tissue target from the ingot count unless the recipe in your current game version shows that ratio. The reliable requirement is five completed Bloodgold Ingots, not an unstated number of raw tissue pieces.
Bloodgold planning
Make the ingots before beginning the final key cast if your smelting setup is distant from the Black Forge. This separates the resource-gathering trip from the precision crafting sequence and lets you discover a shortfall while you are still at your base. If you are carrying only Petrified Tissue, you have not yet met the recipe requirement.
Keep the five ingots together and label or reserve them mentally for the Intricate Key. The same material may have other uses in the Deep North, but the key recipe cannot be completed with a mixture of raw tissue and finished ingots.
Step 4: cast the key at a level 4 Black Forge
Once you have one Intricate Key Mould and five Bloodgold Ingots, use a Black Forge upgraded to level 4. The output of this recipe is Cast: Intricate Key.
- Go to the level 4 Black Forge.
- Place or select 5 Bloodgold.
- Add 1 Intricate Key Mould.
- Craft the recipe to produce Cast: Intricate Key.
This is an intermediate item. It is not the finished key and should not be confused with the mould. If the crafting menu does not show the recipe, check the station level first, then confirm that the ingredients are finished Bloodgold Ingots rather than Petrified Tissue and that the mould is present.
Black Forge troubleshooting
- Recipe absent: verify that the Black Forge is level 4. A lower-level forge does not satisfy the reported requirement.
- Ingredients rejected: check that you have five Bloodgold Ingots and one mould, not five raw-material bundles or an already-used cast.
- You crafted a cast but the gate will not open: complete the Liquid Frost step. The cast is an intermediate stage.
The available descriptions do not specify an alternative station for casting, so do not assume a Frigid Kiln or Frost Foundry can replace the level 4 Black Forge.
Step 5: produce Liquid Frost and finish the key
Liquid Frost is made at a Frigid Kiln. The kiln converts Ice into Liquid Frost. After you have five Liquid Frost, take the Cast: Intricate Key to a Frost Foundry and complete the final process.

- Load Ice into the Frigid Kiln.
- Run the conversion until you have 5 Liquid Frost.
- Open the Frost Foundry.
- Insert 1 Cast: Intricate Key.
- Add 5 Liquid Frost.
- Start the process and wait about 50 seconds.
- Collect the finished Intricate Key.
The approximately 50-second duration applies to the Frost Foundry process described by game-guide sources. It is not a stated total journey time and does not include producing the Liquid Frost, moving between stations or recovering from an interrupted run.

If the Frost Foundry will not start, distinguish between the three similarly named objects in the chain: Ice is the input for the Frigid Kiln, Liquid Frost is the Frost Foundry ingredient, and Cast: Intricate Key is the item being finished. Putting Ice directly into the Frost Foundry, or taking the cast to the Frigid Kiln, does not follow the documented order.
Placing the Black Forge, Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry near one another is a practical layout choice. It does not change the recipe, but it cuts down on carrying time while you correct a missing ingredient or wait for the final process.
Step 6: use the finished key at the gate
Return to the raised Gates of Mörkhalla with the finished Intricate Key. Use the key at the entrance after reaching it with the Grappling Hook. The documented outcome is that the key unlocks the entrance.
How many Intricate Keys do you need?
This point is not settled by the available accounts. One description says that you eventually need three Intricate Keys and that keys are consumed as you progress. Another lists one finished Intricate Key per entrance. Reports also disagree about whether the exterior key remains in your inventory after the first gate opens, whether inner gates consume keys, and whether an entrance consumes one finished key.
Because the disagreement affects five Bloodgold Ingots and five Liquid Frost per key, do not treat a single consumption rule as universal. Before making extras, check the current Valheim Wiki entry or patch information for your game version. If you cannot verify it, make one finished key, record what happens at the exterior gate, and avoid assuming that the same behavior applies to interior gates.
A mould or an unprocessed cast should not be treated as a substitute for the finished item. The account that describes an entrance consuming a key specifically distinguishes a finished Intricate Key from the mould and cast stages.

Resource and time planning
The minimum documented inputs for one completed key are one Intricate Key Mould, five Bloodgold Ingots and five Liquid Frost. That minimum is a recipe count, not a guarantee that one key is sufficient for every Mörkhalla gate. If the current version requires multiple consumptions, multiply the finished-key inputs only after confirming the rule.
| Resource | Documented amount per crafting cycle | Where it enters the chain | Uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intricate Key Mould | 1 | Black Forge | Not guaranteed from enemies or tunnel objects. |
| Bloodgold Ingots | 5 | Black Forge | Petrified Tissue-to-ingot ratio not stated. |
| Liquid Frost | 5 | Frost Foundry | Made from Ice at a Frigid Kiln; total production time not stated. |
| Frost Foundry time | About 50 seconds | Final finishing process | Guide-source figure; patch and conditions were not independently verified. |
For a single crafting cycle, gather the mould first, then prepare the five ingots and five Liquid Frost. This order avoids spending time on Bloodgold when a mould run has failed, while still letting you use a base-centered station layout for the final steps.
Common mistakes and fixes
Expecting a guaranteed mould
Symptom: You clear one wardrobe shaft or rubble pile and find nothing. Fix: The reported chances are 13.8% and 12.0%, respectively, so continue checking eligible objects or switch to the enemy-drop route. A failed object does not indicate that the recipe is unavailable.
Arriving without a Grappling Hook
Symptom: You can see the entrance but cannot reach it. Fix: Return with the required Grappling Hook. The tower entrance is raised, and the hook is explicitly required for access.
Using Petrified Tissue as if it were Bloodgold
Symptom: The Black Forge recipe does not accept your material. Fix: Smelt Petrified Tissue from petrified Gammeltrolls into five Bloodgold Ingots first. The key recipe calls for ingots.
Stopping at Cast: Intricate Key
Symptom: The item is in your inventory, but the gate does not recognize it. Fix: Convert Ice to five Liquid Frost at a Frigid Kiln, then process the cast in a Frost Foundry for about 50 seconds.
Recommended Free Tools
Making one key on an unverified assumption
Symptom: An inner gate requires another key after the exterior gate. Fix: Treat consumption as patch-dependent until confirmed. The published accounts conflict, including on whether three keys are eventually required.
Version and terminology notes
The relevant descriptions refer to Valheim 1.0 and Deep North content, but the current patch was not checked. Recipe costs, drop rates, station levels or gate behavior may therefore differ in a later update. If the in-game crafting menu conflicts with an older guide, use the current in-game requirement and verify the gate rule against an up-to-date wiki or patch note before farming additional Bloodgold.
Spelling also varies between Mörkhalla, Morkhalla and Mokhalla. This guide uses Mörkhalla for the location and Intricate Key for the item. Search results using the alternate spellings can still describe the same gate, mould and crafting chain, but confirm that a page is discussing the Deep North tower rather than an unrelated structure.
