Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Valheim servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Valheim dedicated servers separate difficulty into several independent controls rather than one slider. You can change combat pressure, death consequences, resource yield, raid frequency and portal restrictions, then add switches such as No Map, passive mobs or no build costs. On a dedicated server, these choices are supplied at launch with -preset, -modifier and -setkey arguments.
For a reliable setup, choose a preset first, put every custom override after it, select the correct backend with -crossplay when necessary, and verify networking plus save and backup schedules before inviting players.
What Valheim world modifiers control
A Valheim world can be tuned along five main axes. Each axis affects a different source of friction, so changing one at a time makes it easier to identify why a group finds the world too easy or too punishing. The official dedicated-server guide also documents checkbox-style keys that alter navigation, building or creature behavior.
| Category | Documented values | What the setting changes |
|---|---|---|
| Combat | veryeasy, easy, hard, veryhard |
Overall fighting challenge. |
| DeathPenalty | casual, veryeasy, easy, hard, hardcore |
How costly player death is; hardcore is the severe end of this scale. |
| Resources | muchless, less, more, muchmore, most |
How much material players obtain. |
| Raids | none, muchless, less, more, muchmore |
Frequency of raid events, including the option to disable them with none. |
| Portals | casual, hard, veryhard |
Travel restrictions applied to portals. |
The documented checkbox keys are nomap, passivemobs, nobuildcost and playerevents. They are official game settings, not automatically installed mod features. For example, nomap removes normal map use, while passivemobs and nobuildcost change the character of the entire playthrough rather than merely adjusting combat numbers.
Presets versus individual modifiers
The server guide lists these presets: Normal, Casual, Easy, Hard, Hardcore, Immersive and Hammer. A preset is a bundled starting point. Its exact combination should be checked against the dedicated-server manual shipped with the version you run instead of being inferred from the name alone.
The ordering rule is critical: setting a preset overwrites previous modifiers. Put -preset before any custom -modifier or -setkey arguments. If you place the preset last, it can erase the changes you intended to keep.

How to configure a dedicated server
Dedicated-server launch arguments are the control surface. The exact executable name and installation path depend on your host, so treat the following as an illustrative pattern and verify syntax in the manual included with your installed server version. The example has not been executed here.

- Decide the intended experience. Choose whether the world is relaxed cooperative, a standard progression run or a challenge run. Write down the values you want before editing the startup command.
- Select a preset. Add one of the documented preset names with
-preset. This establishes the bundled baseline. - Add explicit overrides after the preset. Use
-modifierfor an axis and value, and-setkeyfor a checkbox-style key. For example,-modifier resources moreraises material yield and-modifier raids lessreduces raid frequency. - Choose the connection backend. Add
-crossplaywhen players on different supported platforms need the PlayFab backend. If you omit the argument, the Steam backend is used. - Set visibility and networking. A public server is the normal discoverable mode. The guide documents
-public 0for an invisible server that players join by IP. When self-hosting, forward the configured port and that port plus one through the router; both must match the values used by the server. - Configure persistence. Keep the save and backup settings explicit, document where files are stored and confirm that the account running the service can write to that location.
- Start, then verify. Read the startup log for rejected or unknown arguments, connect with a test account and confirm the intended backend, visibility and world behavior before announcing the server.
Illustrative launch pattern
valheim_server -name "My server" -world "Dedicated" -password "yourpassword" -preset hard -modifier resources more -modifier raids less -setkey nomap
This pattern demonstrates the required order: the preset appears first, followed by the resource and raid overrides and then the No Map key. Replace the identity, world and password values, and confirm the command against the manual for your installed build before deploying it.
Understanding each difficulty axis in play
Combat
Combat values change the overall fighting challenge. Raising combat pressure is a direct way to make encounters more dangerous without changing how quickly the group gathers materials or travels. If players are comfortable with exploration but want tougher battles, this is the most targeted adjustment.
Death penalty
DeathPenalty controls the cost of dying. The scale runs from casual through veryeasy, easy and hard to hardcore. Explain this choice before the first session, because it changes how cautiously players recover bodies and how much progress a failed expedition can cost.

Resources
Resources determines material yield. muchless and less increase the grind, while more, muchmore and most shorten the gathering burden. This is useful for groups with limited play time, but high yields can also accelerate progression and reduce the need to establish supply routes.
Raids
Raids controls event frequency. Choose none when the group wants to build without raid interruptions, or use less and muchless to keep events present but rarer. The more and muchmore values make defensive readiness a recurring part of the world.
Portals
Portals ranges from casual to hard and veryhard. Higher restrictions make route planning and physical transport more important. Tell players about this before they establish distant outposts, since a travel rule discovered later can invalidate their logistics plan.

Checkbox-style keys
nomapremoves normal map use and requires players to navigate by landmarks and shared directions.passivemobschanges the baseline behavior of creatures toward a passive style.nobuildcostremoves normal material costs for construction, changing the economy of building.playereventschanges the handling of player-related events according to the game setting.
Because these keys affect the shared world rather than a single character, announce them before the world opens. A group can adapt to almost any rule when it knows the rule in advance; discovering it after building a base or planning a route is much more disruptive.
Example configurations for different groups
The following are planning examples, not additional presets. Apply the values as explicit overrides after whichever preset you select.
| Group goal | Possible approach | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Relaxed cooperative world | Start from Casual or Normal; consider resources more and raids less. |
Less gathering and fewer interruptions, with faster progression. |
| Standard progression | Start from Normal and leave the five axes unchanged until the group has a clear complaint. |
Preserves the baseline experience while providing a reference for later tuning. |
| Combat-focused challenge | Use a challenge-oriented preset, then raise Combat one step and leave resources and portals alone initially. | Fights become harder without simultaneously increasing travel or material friction. |
| Exploration and navigation challenge | Add nomap and, if desired, a stricter Portals value after the chosen preset. |
Players must coordinate routes and landmarks; lost expeditions take longer to recover. |
| Build-focused sandbox | Use nobuildcost; decide separately whether raids should be none or reduced. |
Construction becomes faster, but removing raids also removes a source of defensive pressure. |
Change one axis between sessions whenever possible. If you simultaneously increase Combat, reduce Resources and tighten Portals, players cannot tell which rule caused a problem and administrators have no clean baseline for rollback.

Save intervals, backups and recovery planning
World modifiers matter only if the persistent world is protected. The current official guide lists these defaults:

saveinterval |
1,800 seconds (30 minutes) | How often the world performs a normal save. |
backups |
4 copies | Number of backup copies retained by the default configuration. |
| Short-backup interval | 7,200 seconds (2 hours) | Frequency for short-term backup rotation. |
| Long-backup interval | 43,200 seconds (12 hours) | Frequency for long-term backup rotation. |
These are configuration defaults, not guarantees that a host has unlimited storage or that a restore will work automatically. Check free disk space, identify the actual backup directory and perform a test restore procedure with your hosting provider or operating system. Document who can stop the service, copy the world files and return the server to a known-good state.
Crossplay, visibility and port troubleshooting
Players cannot see or join the server
First check whether you intentionally used -public 0. An invisible server will not appear in the public list; players must use its IP and the configured port. For a self-hosted instance, verify that the port and port plus one are both forwarded to the machine running the server and that the local firewall allows them.
Mixed-platform players cannot connect
Confirm that -crossplay is present when the group requires the PlayFab backend. Without the argument, the server uses the Steam backend. Everyone should then join through the connection method appropriate to that backend.
A custom value appears to be ignored
Inspect argument order. A later -preset can overwrite earlier modifiers, so move the preset before every -modifier and -setkey override. Also check spelling and use only the documented value families; an unrecognized value may be rejected in the startup log.
