Valheim’s Deep North became available with the 1.0 launch on September 9, 2026. For a server group, the reliable approach is to treat it as post-Ashlands progression: establish a portal and supply camp, search Deep North village ruins for Hidden Tunnels, collect moulds, craft Intricate Keys, open Morkhalla, repeat the raid-and-blood loop three times, and then prepare three Malicious Blood for the Kall Fimbulbringer summon at the Strange Bowl.
The exact combat statistics, drop rates, recipes, and server configuration keys have not been published in the available authoritative material. This guide therefore separates confirmed 1.0 information from practical coordination advice, so your group can progress without relying on undocumented numbers that may change in a post-launch update.

Iron Gate Studio released Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026. Its launch announcement described the release as the point when players could “finally venture into the Deep North and Valheim 1.0.” The release announcement also confirmed crossplay across PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Deep North is not a small side area. Iron Gate’s abbreviated 1.0 notes list the following additions:
| Content category | Published 1.0 scale | What a server should plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Weapons | 40+ | More shared storage, repair capacity and sorting than a normal biome push. |
| Creatures | 10+ | New encounters may require role changes and cautious scouting. |
| Buildable pieces | 80+ | Reserve workshop and construction space before committing to a permanent outpost. |
| Crafting materials | 30+ | Use communal chests and label progression-critical resources. |
| Food items | 20+ | Expand food production and agree on shared reserve stacks. |
| Armour sets | 4 | Keep upgrade materials together so the group can outfit replacements. |
| Capes | 2 | Track who has obtained each item rather than assuming every player has one. |
| Trinkets | 2 | Record ownership if your server distributes new utility items by role. |
The same notes mention new tools, locations, music, events, mechanics, upgradeable pockets and achievements. They are abbreviated notes, not a complete recipe or enemy-stat database, so do not infer an exact progression cost from the category counts.
When should a server enter the Deep North?
Current progression coverage places the Deep North after the Ashlands. That is the practical point at which a group should begin: players have access to late-game equipment and food, and the server has enough infrastructure to replace lost gear. The available official material does not publish a separate migration matrix for worlds created before 1.0, so an established world should be checked against the current version rather than assumed to behave identically to a fresh 1.0 world.
Confirm the version before anyone sails north
- Update the dedicated server or host to Valheim 1.0 and update every connecting client.
- Confirm that crossplay is enabled only if the group needs it; the 1.0 announcement lists support for PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2.
- Make a world backup before the first Deep North expedition. Keep the backup separate from the live save so a failed update or corrupted session does not remove the group’s progress.
- Date-stamp your server notes. Iron Gate says it does not maintain a fixed public roadmap and prefers flexibility while iterating on biomes, enemies and resources.
Fresh 1.0 world or established server?
Both approaches can work. The right choice depends on whether your group values a shared discovery experience or immediate access to endgame supplies. The table compares the decision points that matter most for a server party.
| Decision point | Fresh 1.0 world | Established server |
|---|---|---|
| Endgame gear and food | The group must build its post-Ashlands stock from the beginning, so the first expedition is slower and replacement equipment is limited. | Players may already have late-game gear and food, reducing preparation time and recovery time after deaths. |
| Portals and communal storage | Portal routes, beds, workshops and shared chests must be built as part of the Deep North campaign. | Existing infrastructure can support a dedicated northern camp, but old naming schemes and scattered storage can cause confusion. |
| Discovery | Everyone discovers the village-ruin, Hidden Tunnel and Morkhalla sequence together. | Veteran players may know the route already; agree whether to guide newcomers or let them investigate. |
| Change tolerance | The world begins on the 1.0 ruleset, but post-launch balance or content changes can still affect future sessions. | Older worlds need a version-specific check because official sources do not define a universal migration procedure. |
For either option, nominate one person to maintain a short progression log. Record the village ruin, portal name, moulds recovered, keys crafted, Morkhalla status, raid count and Malicious Blood held. This prevents the common server problem where several players believe someone else is carrying the only progression item.
Prepare the server camp before the first expedition
The Deep North campaign is easier when the group treats logistics as a shared project rather than a series of individual trips. The following setup uses only confirmed progression elements and sensible server coordination practices.

Build a safe portal and supply camp
- Place a portal in a defensible location near the area your group is exploring. Give it a unique, written name and record the name in the server log.
- Store spare food, building materials, repair supplies and replacement equipment at the camp. The 1.0 notes’ 30-plus crafting materials and 20-plus food items make an unlabelled chest difficult to manage.
- Create one communal chest for progression-critical materials. Keep moulds, Intricate Keys and Malicious Blood out of personal “temporary” containers.
- Reserve a repair and crafting area with enough capacity for the new tools, weapons, armour and building pieces introduced in 1.0.
- Agree on a recovery rule before the expedition: who retrieves a fallen player’s equipment, who stays at the portal, and when the group abandons a run.
Assign roles for a four-person group
| Role | Primary responsibility | Useful handoff record |
|---|---|---|
| Scout | Maps village ruins, marks large two-story buildings and identifies likely Hidden Tunnel entrances. | Ruin location, portal distance and whether the pit was inspected. |
| Logistics lead | Maintains food, repair supplies, spare equipment and communal storage. | Current reserve counts and the location of replacement gear. |
| Key custodian | Tracks moulds and Intricate Keys and confirms who is carrying them. | Moulds recovered, keys crafted and whether a key has been used. |
| Builder or camp keeper | Maintains the portal, shelter and repair area while the group explores. | Portal name, camp condition and unfinished construction tasks. |
| Combat coordinator | Sets regroup points and decides when the party returns to resupply. | Raid count, missing players and the next planned session. |
These are assignments, not separate classes. Rotate them if the same player should not control every progression item.
Find a village ruin and enter the Hidden Tunnels
The first reported Deep North objective is a village ruin. The important clue is architectural: large two-story buildings can contain pits that lead to Hidden Tunnels.
- From the portal camp, search for a Deep North village ruin and mark its position before entering. A map marker lets the group return after a failed run.
- Inspect the large two-story buildings first. Look for a pit or opening in the structure that descends below the ruin.
- Have the scout call out the building and mark it on the map. Do not let one player carry the only location information in a private map.
- Send enough players into the tunnel to protect the carrier of any moulds, while leaving a route back to the portal.
- Place a temporary marker or written note when moulds are found. The group may need to revisit the ruin after returning with supplies.
Not every building has been documented as containing a tunnel. If a ruin produces no entrance, search its other large structures and check additional village ruins rather than assuming that a missing pit indicates a server failure.
Collect moulds and craft Intricate Keys
Hidden Tunnels contain moulds. The practical purpose of those moulds is to make Intricate Keys or gear upgrades. The available authoritative information does not specify the complete recipe, the number of moulds required per key, or whether every mould has the same use.
Use a controlled crafting handoff
- Deposit every mould in the communal progression chest when the party returns to camp.
- Record which player is responsible for crafting the next Intricate Key or upgrade. This avoids duplicated crafting and lost materials.
- Craft the key or upgrade through the current in-game crafting interface. If the recipe is not visible, confirm that the relevant station and materials are available rather than guessing a server command.
- Return unused moulds to communal storage and update the log with the number of keys available.
- Send the key custodian to Morkhalla with a second player whenever possible. A single death should not strand the entire server’s progression.
Because exact recipes and drop rates are not established in the available official notes, keep a reserve of moulds until the group has opened Morkhalla and confirmed what the server requires next.

Open Morkhalla with an Intricate Key
Once the group has an Intricate Key, it can open Morkhalla. Treat the key as a progression asset, not ordinary loot. Before using it, verify the portal route, empty enough inventory space for new materials and agree who will carry the key.
- Bring the key custodian, a second player who can confirm the location, and enough supplies to return to camp.
- Record the Morkhalla entrance on the shared map and in the session log.
- Do not spend the group’s last key on an unplanned solo trip. The server should know whether the key was used, lost or still available.
- After opening Morkhalla, pause to sort new items before beginning the next raid loop. The 1.0 content volume makes it easy to mix boss materials with ordinary drops.
The reported route to Kall Fimbulbringer
Current practical coverage reports a three-cycle progression loop. The group repeats the village-ruin and Hidden Tunnel process, gathers enough Jotun raids and Malicious Blood, and then summons Kall Fimbulbringer at the Strange Bowl by offering three Malicious Blood.
The sequence should be managed as a checklist:
- Establish or restore the safe portal and supply camp.
- Search a village ruin for a large two-story building with a pit to Hidden Tunnels.
- Collect the moulds required for Intricate Keys or gear upgrades.
- Craft and account for the Intricate Key.
- Use the key to open Morkhalla.
- Complete the reported Jotun raid and Malicious Blood collection loop.
- Repeat the process until the server has completed three cycles and holds three Malicious Blood for the summon.
- Move the blood to the Strange Bowl only when the group is assembled and the recovery portal is active.
- Summon Kall Fimbulbringer at the Strange Bowl by offering the three Malicious Blood.
The number of cycles and the three-blood offering are the reported boss path, while exact raid conditions, drop rates and combat values are not established by authoritative sources here. If your server’s current 1.0 build presents a different requirement, follow the in-game objective and record the version before asking players to repeat a failed loop.
Gear, food and inventory planning
No authoritative Deep North loadout, resistance chart or minimum armour value is provided in the available material. Avoid publishing a fixed “best build” as if it were permanent. Instead, prepare around replacement capacity and group resilience.
Use a replaceable endgame kit
- Equip the strongest post-Ashlands equipment your group can reproduce, rather than taking irreplaceable personal items on the first scouting run.
- Keep a complete spare set in the supply camp for the player most likely to recover a corpse.
- Split progression materials between at least two players during long trips, but store the master reserve in the communal chest when back at camp.
- Carry enough food for the return journey, not only the approach. The 1.0 notes list more than 20 new food items, so label shared stacks by purpose and freshness according to your server’s existing system.
- Leave inventory space for moulds, keys, materials and raid rewards. A full inventory can turn a successful tunnel run into a forced drop.
Budget workshop and storage space
Forty-plus weapons, four armour sets, two capes, two trinkets and more than 80 buildable pieces can quickly overwhelm a small outpost. Before the first raid, expand the camp’s storage and decide which chests are for raw materials, food, equipment, construction pieces and boss items. Keep one clearly marked chest for items that must never be consumed or dismantled before the next progression step.

Server procedures that prevent lost progress
Use explicit portal names
Name portals for their function and location, such as a northern camp or a specific village ruin, and write the exact spelling in the server log. Do not rely on memory when multiple portals are being built in the same session.
Record custody of progression items
After every session, write down who holds the Intricate Keys, where moulds are stored, how many Morkhalla openings have been completed, the raid count and the Malicious Blood total. This is especially important when players join at different times or when crossplay brings several platforms into one server.
Recommended Free Tools
Separate discovery from farming
Let the first run focus on locating the ruin, tunnel and Morkhalla. Schedule a later run for repeated material collection. Mixing exploration and farming can leave the group unsure whether a mould was used, stored or dropped during a retreat.
Troubleshooting common Deep North problems
No pit appears in the first building
Inspect the other large two-story buildings in the ruin and mark additional ruins. The documented clue identifies a building type, not a guarantee that every building contains a tunnel. Check that all clients and the server are on the same 1.0 build before treating the absence as a technical problem.
The group cannot make an Intricate Key
Return the moulds to communal storage, verify the relevant crafting station and check the current in-game recipe. The exact recipe and mould-to-key quantity are not established in the available authoritative notes, so do not rely on an unverified number from an older guide.

Morkhalla will not open
Confirm that the party is using an Intricate Key rather than an unspent mould, that the key has not already been consumed and that the server log identifies the correct location. If the interaction still fails, capture the version and the in-game message for a version-specific support check.
The group is short on Malicious Blood
Return to the reported raid loop and verify the session log before repeating it. Separate confirmed blood held in communal storage from blood carried by individual players. Do not assume an undocumented drop rate; it may vary with a later balance update.
A player wants to summon Kall alone
Delay the summon until the recovery portal, spare equipment and the rest of the party are ready. The reported path requires three Malicious Blood at the Strange Bowl, so consuming the reserve during an unplanned attempt can force the entire server to repeat the loop.
Keep the guide current after launch
Iron Gate’s FAQ records Deep North pre-production from May to October 2024 and explains that the studio does not keep a fixed public roadmap. That development approach means server instructions should carry a date and version. Recheck recipes, raid requirements, item behavior and world compatibility after a major update, and revise the progression log instead of silently treating old numbers as permanent.
For a server group, the durable plan is organizational: update together, build a recoverable camp, centralize progression materials, document every key and raid cycle, and schedule the Kall Fimbulbringer summon only after three Malicious Blood are verified in storage. Everything beyond that checklist—exact combat values, drop rates, configuration keys and final balance—should be confirmed against the current 1.0 build rather than guessed.
