Valheim commands usually fail for one of five reasons: the game was not started with console support enabled, it was launched through a different shortcut than the one you configured, devcommands was never submitted, the command is a single-player cheat being used in multiplayer, or a key/modification is preventing the console from opening. Fix the problem in that order: enable -console for your platform, launch through the configured entry, enter a world, open the console, run devcommands, and then test a command that fits your session.
Identify the failure before changing anything
The exact symptom tells you which layer is broken. Do not troubleshoot command syntax until the console itself opens and accepts devcommands.

Enable the developer console for your platform
Valheim must be started with the -console launch argument on platforms where console mode is not already enabled. Configure it once, then always start the game through the same entry. Starting from another desktop shortcut, launcher tile, or executable can omit the argument.
Steam
- Open the Steam Library and select Valheim.
- Open Properties, select General, and find Launch Options.
- Enter
-consoleas the launch option. - Close the properties window and launch Valheim from that Steam Library entry.
Do not use a separate shortcut until you have confirmed that it passes the argument. If you changed the option while the game was running, quit Valheim completely and launch it again.
Microsoft Store edition
- Locate the
Valheim.exefile and create or edit a shortcut. - Open the shortcut’s Properties.
- Append
-consoleto the end of the Target field, after the existing executable path. - Apply the change and launch Valheim through that shortcut.
The target must retain the executable path and add the argument after it. Launching the game from a different Microsoft Store entry may bypass the edited shortcut.
Xbox
Iron Gate states that console mode is enabled by default on Xbox. You do not add a launch argument. Load a world and use the controller shortcut described below.

Open Terminal and launch the documented executable with:
/Applications/Valheim.app/Contents/MacOS/Valheim -consoleThat command starts the application with console support. If you want a permanent launcher, create one that runs the same executable with the same argument; launching the app normally may not preserve the option.
Open the console and activate commands
The console is available only after you have entered a Valheim world, not from the title screen or world-selection menu.

- Load the world in which you want to use commands.
- On a keyboard, press F5. With a controller, press LB + LT + Start together.
- Type
devcommandsin the console. - Press Enter to submit it. Most console commands become eligible only after this command has been executed.
- Run a simple test such as
posorsave.
Type the command in lowercase exactly as shown. A command appearing in the console is not necessarily active; it must be submitted, and some commands require parameters or a particular game context.
Use a known-good command to separate authorization from syntax
Once devcommands has been accepted, test a command with no arguments first. These examples are useful for diagnosis because each has a clear, immediate result.

If pos and save work, the console and authorization layers are functioning. A command that still fails should be checked for its required target, argument, or game-state condition rather than for another console switch.
Check command syntax and side effects
Several commands require values in addition to the command name. Include the brackets only as a reminder of the value; replace them with real text or numbers and omit the brackets when entering the command.
raiseskill [skill] [amount]requires a skill name and an amount, for example the appropriate skill identifier followed by a numeric increase.goto [x,z]requires coordinates in the expected format. A malformed pair will not teleport you.event [name]requires the name of an available event.todchanges the time of day and may require a time value depending on the command form supported by your game version.
Commands such as killall, event, exploremap, and debugmode can permanently or materially change a world. Make a manual backup or use a disposable test world before experimenting.

What debug mode adds
After running debugmode, the additional controls are:
- B: build without normal material costs.
- Z: fly.
- K: kill nearby enemies.
- Ctrl+F3: hide or show the HUD.
These controls are separate from the console window. If debugmode is accepted but a key does nothing, verify that the game window has focus and that another application or mod has not remapped the key.
Why multiplayer commands fail
Single-player cheats are not a universal administrator interface. The command references commonly used for god, heal, pos, goto, freefly, save, and debugmode describe them as single-player cheats that do not work on a multiplayer server.
This explains the common pattern in which a command works in a local solo world but appears ignored after joining a dedicated or hosted server. The console may be opening correctly; the server is simply rejecting a command that is outside the multiplayer command set or your authority.
Use the right multiplayer path
- Determine whether you are the host, a dedicated-server administrator, or a normal connected player.
- Check the server’s administrator command documentation and permission list.
- Use commands explicitly supported by that server context, with the required admin authentication.
- Test in a safe area and confirm the server reports acceptance; a local client-side console opening does not grant server permissions.
Do not diagnose a server restriction by repeatedly changing Steam launch options. Those options affect whether your local console opens, not whether a remote server authorizes a cheat.

If F5 does not open the console
Confirm the game was launched with the option
Recheck the platform instructions above, then quit and relaunch through the configured Steam Library entry, edited Microsoft Store shortcut, or Terminal command. A frequent mistake is enabling -console and then starting Valheim from an unconfigured desktop icon.
Check function-key behavior
Laptop keyboards may require an Fn modifier, or a hardware setting may make the top row control brightness and volume instead of F-keys. Test F5 in another application, try the keyboard’s function-lock key, and then retry in a loaded world. On macOS, verify that the key is being sent as F5 rather than a system control.
Try the controller shortcut
With a controller, use LB + LT + Start. Press the buttons together while the world is active. If the controller shortcut works while F5 does not, the issue is keyboard input rather than console authorization.
Check focus and permissions
Click the Valheim window before pressing F5 and close overlays that may capture the key. On Windows, administrator permissions can affect some installations; if the official launch-option steps are correct but the console still will not appear, try running the game through the configured entry with the permissions appropriate to your installation.
Temporarily remove modifications
Disable recent mods and reproduce the problem in an otherwise unmodded game. Community reports have suggested outdated mods, the in-game developer-console setting, or the -console override as possible causes when the launch argument is present. These reports are not proof of a universal cause, but they make a clean vanilla test a sensible isolation step.

Vanilla-versus-modded isolation procedure
- Record which mods and mod-loader version are installed so you can restore the setup.
- Back up the world and character saves before removing anything.
- Disable mods without deleting the original files.
- Launch Valheim with the correct
-consoleconfiguration and create or enter a test world. - Open the console, submit
devcommands, and testpos. - If the vanilla test succeeds, re-enable mods one at a time until the conflict returns.
If the console fails even in a clean test, the likely causes are the launcher entry, keyboard/controller input, or the platform installation rather than a particular command.

Using developer commands can block achievements. A Steam-only patch reported by PC Gamer on September 11, 2026, added the command yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway, which lets eligible players opt back into achievements after previous use of devcommands or mods. Iron Gate described this as an opt-in function and left the decision to the player’s judgment.
Treat this as Steam- and version-dependent. The command may not exist on Xbox, the Microsoft Store edition, or the Mac App Store build, and availability can change with later patches. If achievements matter, check the current Steam build notes before relying on it and do not assume that enabling the option retroactively restores every achievement in every version.
A complete troubleshooting checklist
- Start Valheim from the same configured entry every time.
- Confirm
-consoleis present where your platform requires it; Xbox enables console mode by default. - Load into a world before opening the console.
- Use F5 on a keyboard or LB + LT + Start on a controller.
- Submit
devcommandsand press Enter. - Test
posorsavebefore testing destructive or parameterized commands. - Check spelling, required arguments, and whether the command needs a nearby target.
- For multiplayer, use the server-admin command set and verify your permissions.
- Test F5, function-lock settings, focus, and controller input if the console is invisible.
- Back up saves and isolate recent mods in a vanilla test world.
When these checks pass, a command that still does not act is most likely restricted by the current world or server, incorrectly formatted, or unavailable in that game’s platform/version—not evidence that the console itself is broken.
