On a vanilla Valheim dedicated server, admin access is controlled by SteamID64 entries in adminlist.txt. Listed administrators can moderate players with commands such as kick, ban, unban, banned and save, but they do not automatically receive god, spawn or other developer cheats.
Most cheat commands work in single-player or a player-hosted world. They are not available on a standard dedicated server, even when the player is listed as an administrator. Full developer commands on a dedicated server require a server-side modification, with the same mod generally required on connected clients.
What “admin” means in Valheim
Valheim has two separate permission concepts that are often confused:
- Server administration: permission to moderate players and run supported server-management commands.
- Developer cheats: world-altering or character-altering commands such as
god,spawnandgoto.
An entry in adminlist.txt grants the first type of access. It does not, by itself, unlock the second. The game identifies administrators by their SteamID64, not by the name shown above their character or by their Steam display name. A name change therefore does not remove or grant access; changing the ID in the file does.

This distinction matters most on rented or self-hosted dedicated servers. A player can be a correctly configured administrator and still receive an error when trying to run god. That is expected behavior on a vanilla dedicated server, not proof that the ID was entered incorrectly.
Make yourself an administrator
1. Stop the server before editing files
Use the stop or shutdown control in your hosting panel, or stop the dedicated-server process on a self-hosted machine. Editing a live file can be overwritten when the process exits, and a restart makes it clear which configuration the server actually loaded.

Locate the server’s world/configuration files and open adminlist.txt in a plain-text editor. Managed hosts usually expose this file through a file manager; self-hosted administrators will find it in the server’s persistent data area. If the file does not exist, create a plain-text file with exactly that name rather than a rich-text document.
3. Add the administrator’s SteamID64
Put one SteamID64 on each line. Use the complete 64-bit identifier, not a display name, profile nickname, short SteamID format or character name. Remove leading or trailing spaces. For several administrators, add each ID on its own line:

4. Save, restart and reconnect
Save the file as UTF-8 plain text, restart the dedicated server and reconnect after it has finished loading. If the server was running while you edited the file, assume the old permissions remain until a restart unless your host documents a live reload.

After connecting, open the console and test a non-destructive administrative command such as save. If it is rejected, check the ID, file name, file location and restart status before attempting any cheat command.
Opening the Valheim console
- In Steam, open Valheim’s launch options and add
-console. - Start the game and connect to the server.
- Press
F5while connected to open the in-game console. - Type a command and press Enter. Commands are normally entered without a leading slash.
The launch option enables the client console; it does not grant server permissions. A player can see the console and still be unable to run administrator commands. Conversely, being in adminlist.txt does not make the console appear unless the client was started with the required option.
Vanilla dedicated-server commands
These are the administration commands consistently associated with a vanilla dedicated server. Exact argument formats and available options can change with game updates, so use the command help shown by your current build when it is available.

Target arguments can vary by command and game version. When a command accepts a player target, select the exact connected player or identifier shown by the console rather than relying on a similar display name. If a command is rejected, read the syntax error literally and check the current in-game help instead of repeatedly guessing parameters.

World modifiers on a dedicated server
Valheim also has commands for changing world modifiers. These are separate from player cheats: they alter rules such as difficulty or resource behavior for the world. Their names, parameters and supported values have changed across updates, so do not copy an old command string blindly. Confirm the syntax in the version running on your server, announce the change to players, and make a backup or save first. A modifier change can affect everyone who enters that world.
Why god, spawn and goto fail
The Valheim Wiki’s developer-console guidance and supporting Steam community discussions indicate that cheat commands do not work on a vanilla dedicated server. This includes commonly requested commands such as:
godfor invulnerability;spawnfor creating items or creatures;gotofor teleporting to coordinates.
Adding a SteamID64 to adminlist.txt changes moderation rights, not the dedicated server’s execution mode. There is no vanilla setting that turns every administrator into a cheat-enabled player. Guides that suggest simply typing devcommands on a dedicated server conflict with the more conservative reading supported by the game’s developer-console documentation.
Where cheats do work
Full developer commands are generally available in single-player and in worlds hosted directly by a player, subject to the current game version’s console requirements. These environments differ from a separately running dedicated server: the hosting player’s client is also the world host, so developer commands can be enabled in that session.

Using a modded dedicated server
Community reports describe the third-party Server_devcommands mod as a way to expose full developer commands on a dedicated server. Treat this as a mod-dependent solution rather than a vanilla feature. The usual requirement is installation on both the server and the client, and every connected player may need a compatible version. A server-only installation, a mismatched mod version or a missing dependency can produce “command not found,” connection failures or inconsistent behavior.

Because this approach is community-maintained, verify compatibility with your Valheim build and hosting environment before changing a live world. Back up the world, test on a copy and remove the mod cleanly if it causes startup or connection problems.
File controls that are easy to confuse
bannedlist.txt
bannedlist.txt contains SteamIDs that are blocked from the server. It is an access-deny list, not an administrator list. Removing a player from adminlist.txt will not lift a ban, and adding a player to adminlist.txt will not override a ban.
permittedlist.txt
permittedlist.txt acts as an allowlist for invite-only servers. When this restriction is in use, only the SteamIDs listed there can join. It controls admission, whereas adminlist.txt controls administrative permission after connection.

Self-hosted versus managed hosting

On either type of server, keep a dated backup before changing permissions, world modifiers or mods. Record which SteamID64 belongs to each operator, and remove former administrators promptly.

Troubleshooting checklist
The console does not open
- Confirm
-consoleis in Valheim’s Steam launch options, not in a server-panel field intended for a different process. - Connect to the world first, then press
F5. - Restart the game after changing launch options.
An admin command says you are not permitted
- Check that the ID in
adminlist.txtis the full SteamID64 and appears on its own line. - Check capitalization and spelling of the file name.
- Confirm the edited file belongs to the active world/server instance.
- Stop and restart the server, then reconnect.
god or spawn says the command is unknown
On a vanilla dedicated server, this is expected. Use a single-player or player-hosted session for cheats, or deliberately install and maintain a compatible server-side developer-command mod on the server and clients.
A player is still unable to join after being unbanned
Check both the ban list and the permitted list. Removing an entry from bannedlist.txt does not help if the player’s SteamID64 is absent from an active allowlist. Restart if the server does not reload the file automatically.

Recheck the current Valheim documentation and your host’s file layout. A guide written for an earlier release may use obsolete command syntax or assumptions about SteamID handling. Reports that Valheim 1.0 changed SteamID processing are based on a single unverified guide, so do not alter a working setup solely on that claim; test the current build and confirm behavior in a backup environment.
A safe operating procedure for server owners
- Create a backup or snapshot of the world.
- Maintain a short operator list with each person’s SteamID64 and role.
- Edit only the relevant file:
adminlist.txt,bannedlist.txtorpermittedlist.txt. - Stop the server before file edits and restart afterward.
- Test with
savebefore using moderation or world-modifier commands. - Announce world-rule changes and record who made them.
- Use cheats only in an environment designed to support them; do not assume administrator status enables cheats on a vanilla dedicated server.
This workflow keeps moderation, admission and developer experimentation separate, which makes mistakes easier to diagnose and reverse.
Version and compatibility cautions
Console commands, file paths and SteamID behavior can change as Valheim is updated. A command list that worked for one release may omit a newer restriction or show an argument order that no longer applies. Treat the in-game help and current Valheim documentation as authoritative for the build actually running on your server. For mods, match server and client versions and test updates before applying them to an established world.
