The recommended Valheim progression order in 2026 is Meadows → Black Forest → Swamp → Mountain → Plains → Mistlands → Ashlands → Deep North. Each biome introduces a harsher environment, a new material tier and a boss whose reward opens the next stage. Ocean is mainly the travel layer between landmasses, not a separate boss biome. The 1.0 update adds the Deep North; you can continue an existing character and world, but unexplored terrain is important for proper generation.
The complete biome order at a glance
Use this table as a route planner rather than a checklist of sightseeing locations. Do not move on merely because you can enter a biome: move on when you can survive its environmental hazard, produce its main crafting tier and defeat its boss reliably.

How Valheim progression actually works
Valheim is gated by materials and boss rewards rather than by a linear quest marker. The practical loop is consistent: scout a new biome, harvest its first materials, turn those materials into weapons, armor, tools and consumables, then summon and defeat the biome boss. The reward usually provides the key item needed to exploit the next biome’s resources.
Keep a main base in a safe biome and establish temporary outposts as travel distance increases. A portal network, spare food and a recovery chest reduce the cost of failed expeditions, while a defensible forward base gives you somewhere to repair, rest and store ore. Sailing matters because large oceans separate landmasses; the ocean itself is normally a transport problem, not a boss progression step.
#1 Best Overall
1. Meadows: establish survival basics and defeat Eikthyr
What to build and collect
Start by placing a shelter and workbench, then secure a repeatable supply of wood, stone, flint, leather and cooked food. A bow is worth crafting early because deer are both a food source and the source of the trophies required for the first boss. Keep several food types available instead of relying on a single recipe: the extra health and stamina make your first exploration trips much safer.
Summoning Eikthyr
Eikthyr’s altar requires two Deer Trophies. Mark the altar and your base on the map so that a death does not force you to search again. Fight in the open area around the altar, use the bow when you need distance, and avoid allowing the boss to pin you against rocks or trees.

Reward and the next gate
Defeating Eikthyr grants the Eikthyr Trophy and Hard Antlers. Hard Antlers enable the first pickaxe, which is the tool that changes progression from surface gathering to actual metal mining. The Eikthyr forsaken power reduces running, jumping and swimming stamina use by 60% for 300 seconds, according to PC Gamer’s progression reference; activate it before a long trek or a demanding escape rather than wasting it at the base.
2. Black Forest: begin metalworking and defeat The Elder
Required preparation
Use the antler pickaxe to mine Copper in the Black Forest and collect Tin along shorelines and waterways. Search Burial Chambers for Surtling Cores; they are required for the smelter and charcoal kiln that make ore processing possible. Once bronze is available, build a forge and replace your weakest tools, weapons and armor.
A bronze pickaxe deserves priority even if your weapon upgrade feels more exciting. Faster and more durable mining shortens every later metal trip, and the pickaxe is also the tool you will rely on to expand a permanent base.
The Elder encounter
The Elder is summoned with three Ancient Seeds. Clear enough surrounding trees and ground cover to give yourself room to move, and bring arrows, cooked food and a shield or melee weapon for periods when the boss closes the distance. Avoid fighting directly beside the altar if nearby Greydwarfs can join the battle.

The Elder rewards the Swamp Key. Carry it to the Swamp and use it on the locked entrances of Sunken Crypts; without the key, the most reliable early source of swamp iron remains inaccessible. The Black Forest is therefore complete only when you have bronze equipment, a functioning smelting and forging setup, and the key in your inventory.
3. Swamp: secure iron and poison protection, then defeat Bonemass
Enter with poison resistance
Swamp damage is not limited to direct hits. Poison, waterlogged ground and draugr attacks can drain health while you are trying to retreat. Brew Poison Resistance Mead before your first serious crypt run and carry enough healing and stamina mead to survive a detour or a corpse recovery. Travel in daylight when learning the area, and place a small covered portal or storage shelter on safe ground outside the wettest sections.
Mining Scrap Iron
Use the Swamp Key on Sunken Crypts, then mine Scrap Iron from the muddy scrap piles inside. Crypt corridors are narrow, so open blocked rooms methodically and keep an escape route behind you. Smelt the scrap and replace bronze equipment with iron tools, weapons and armor; the extra durability matters because swamp expeditions often involve several trips through the same hostile rooms.
Bonemass and the Wishbone
Craft your iron kit and stock healing and stamina meads before summoning Bonemass. The reward is the Wishbone, a detector that reveals buried silver in the Mountains. Equip it when exploring mountain slopes: its pulses point you toward deposits that cannot be seen from the surface, turning silver hunting from guesswork into a deliberate search.
4. Mountain: obtain silver and cold protection, then defeat Moder
Survive the cold first
Mountains apply freezing exposure, so bring Frost Resistance before climbing. Carry spare mead for a corpse run and establish a warm shelter near a route upward. Wolves can appear quickly and push you off steep slopes; use terrain carefully and avoid fighting on a narrow ledge when a wider shelf is available.
Silver, obsidian and wolf materials
Equip the Wishbone and follow its pulses to mine Silver. Gather Obsidian while you are in the range, and collect wolf materials for the mountain armor tier. Silver weapons and wolf armor are the principal preparation for the boss, not optional luxury upgrades. Mining sites are often exposed, so mark each vein and return with enough stamina food to carry ore safely.
Summoning Moder
Moder requires three Dragon Eggs. Eggs are heavy and awkward to transport, so plan a route from each egg site to the altar before lifting the first one. Leave a portal and a protected chest near the approach, but do not place fragile structures where the fight can destroy your only return route.
Dragon Tears and advanced crafting
Moder rewards Dragon Tears. They unlock the Artisan Table, which begins the advanced crafting chain used for the next tier. Do not leave the Mountains immediately after the kill: process the silver you have stockpiled, make sure the artisan setup is functional, and then prepare a Plains expedition.

5. Plains: produce black-metal gear and defeat Yagluth
Build a defensible foothold
The Plains punish improvised camps. Establish a fortified base with walls, a repair point, storage and a portal before you start hauling ore or crops. Scout the perimeter for Fuling camps and deathsquito paths, and keep an alternate exit so one patrol cannot trap you inside your own walls.
Farming and smelting
Plant Barley and Flax as soon as you can protect a small farm. Smelt Black Metal and use it for black-metal weapons while producing padded armor. Farming is part of progression here: the crops support the food and armor chain rather than serving only as decoration.
Yagluth’s summoning requirement
Collect five Fuling Totems for Yagluth. Store them in a secure chest before traveling to the altar, because losing a stack on a failed run delays the boss attempt. Bring your best food, repaired equipment and enough arrows or other ammunition for a prolonged fight.
Opening Mistlands access
Yagluth’s reward enables the Wisp Fountain. Build it before entering the fog and collect the resulting wisp so you can craft a Wisp Light. This is the practical access preparation for Mistlands, where ordinary sight lines disappear within seconds.
6. Mistlands: light the fog, unlock eitr systems and defeat The Queen
Visibility and first materials
Bring a Wisp Light and keep it equipped while scouting. Mistlands terrain combines fog, cliffs and sudden drops; move slowly, mark safe routes and avoid jumping across gaps you cannot see through the mist. Your first targets are Infested Mines, which contain the materials that define this tier.
What to bring home
Mine and collect Black Cores, Black Marble, Soft Tissue, Sap, Yggdrasil Wood, Carapace and Mandibles. Each supports a different part of the Mistlands crafting chain, so maintain separate storage for cores, building stone, creature drops and magical ingredients. Do not assume one successful mine run is enough; eitr equipment and the associated crafting stations consume several of these categories.
Eitr equipment and The Queen
Mistlands introduces eitr-based magic and Eitr-weave equipment. Decide whether your group needs a magic-focused character before spending all rare materials on a single armor path, and keep conventional weapons available for enemies resistant to your chosen attack type. The Queen is the biome’s boss and the major progression gate. Enter her arena only after you can replace lost eitr supplies and recover from a failed attempt without crossing the entire mist field again.

7. Ashlands: establish a beachhead, mine flametal and defeat Fader
Landing in the southern biome
Reach the Ashlands with a Drakkar, then treat the first shoreline as a military landing rather than a normal dock. Build a defensible beachhead, secure a portal and create a repair and storage area before pushing inland. The southern coast can turn a simple disembarkation into a long corpse-recovery chain if you have no protected foothold.
Fortresses and the Ashlands material tier
Storm Charred Fortresses for access to the biome’s progression materials and mine Flametal. Expect to handle Grausten, Proustite Powder, Sulfur, Charred Bone, Charred Skull and Asksvin parts in addition to the main ore. Sort these resources at the beachhead; returning to a distant home base for every repair wastes more time than the mining itself.
Preparing for Fader
Craft Ashlands-tier weapons and armor, gather the items required for the Fader summon and clear the approach around the arena. The boss should be your final Ashlands objective before moving north. Keep a spare Drakkar or a marked escape route if your settlement is on a separate island, because a defeat can strand a large amount of high-tier material on hostile ground.

What changed in Valheim 1.0
Iron Gate Studio’s official announcement dated September 9, 2026 states: “The time has come to finally venture into the Deep North and Valheim 1.0.” The 1.0 patch notes describe a full endgame biome rather than a small postscript: 40+ new weapons, four new armor sets, 10+ new creatures, 80+ new buildable pieces, 30+ new crafting materials and 20+ new food items, plus new locations, events, mechanics and upgradeable pockets.
Deep North resources and locations
PC Gamer’s September 11, 2026 checklist identifies Timberwood, Snowballs, Ice/Liquid Frost, Petrified Tissue/Bloodgold, Memorial Coal, Embers, Frostfire Essence, Thunderblood Essence, Frostcore and Nornathread among the new materials. Animal drops include materials from Moose and Seals. Plan several short expeditions instead of one overloaded run: cold-weather resources, creature drops and dungeon loot occupy different inventory slots, and a secure northern outpost makes sorting possible.
The listed dungeons are Hidden Tunnels and Morkhalla. Mark entrances as soon as you find them, because snow and low visibility can make a return route difficult to recognize.
Kall Fimbulbringer and the final reward
The listed Deep North boss is Kall Fimbulbringer. Summon Kall by offering three Malicious Blood at the Strange Bowl. Victory rewards Sacrificial Blood and a Crown Jewel. Treat the summon site as a permanent endgame operation: stock food and ammunition nearby, prepare a recovery portal and clear enough surrounding space that the fight is not joined by unrelated creatures.
Do you need a new world for the Deep North?
No. The 1.0 transition does not automatically require a new character or a new world. Existing worlds receive the new content. The important limitation is terrain generation: new biome features work properly only in areas that have not already been explored.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf you are returning to an established save, stop exploring the intended Deep North region before loading the updated version. Do not sail through it, reveal it from a mountain or build a temporary camp there. Choose a northern area that remains undiscovered, update the game, then approach it for the first time. A completely new world is an optional clean start, not a requirement for accessing the 1.0 biome.
Readiness checks before crossing each gate
Use these checks to decide whether you are genuinely ready, rather than relying on the fact that you have located a boss altar.
- Meadows to Black Forest: You have a shelter, workbench, bow, reliable food and two Deer Trophies, with a marked route to Eikthyr’s altar.
- Black Forest to Swamp: Copper and tin are being processed, a forge and smelter operate at your base, bronze equipment is repaired and the Swamp Key is secured.
- Swamp to Mountain: Poison Resistance Mead is brewed, iron gear is serviceable, and you can complete a crypt run without exhausting all healing supplies.
- Mountain to Plains: Frost protection is available for every expedition, silver weapons and wolf armor are equipped, and three Dragon Eggs can be transported safely.
- Plains to Mistlands: Your base is fortified, barley and flax are producing, black-metal and padded gear are ready, and five Fuling Totems are stored for Yagluth.
- Mistlands to Ashlands: You can maintain Wisp Light supplies, have tested your eitr or conventional combat setup, and can recover from a mine run without losing all Black Cores and Sap.
- Ashlands to Deep North: A Drakkar, a protected beachhead and Ashlands-tier equipment are in place; Fader’s summoning items are complete and your northern destination remains unexplored until 1.0 is installed.
- Deep North endgame: You have an expedition base, cold-ready food and equipment, spare portals and enough inventory space to separate new materials from creature and dungeon loot.
Common progression mistakes and practical fixes
Entering a biome because the map allows it
Map access is not the same as equipment readiness. If enemies kill you before you can gather the first local material, retreat, finish the previous tier and return with resistance mead, upgraded food and a recovery route.
Hauling all valuables on the first trip
Ore, eggs and boss-summoning items are expensive to replace. Use marked waypoints, temporary chests and portals so one death does not erase an entire tier’s progress. Move the valuable material only after the route has been tested.

Plains, Ashlands and Deep North expeditions become dramatically more manageable when a repair point, bed or portal, storage and a fallback wall are already operating. Build the foothold before beginning the resource grind, not after the first disaster.
Exploring the Deep North too early in an existing world
Revealing terrain before the 1.0 update can prevent correct generation in that area. Leave the region untouched, update the game, and then discover it for the first time.
